Be it known that l, HERBERT E. FLETCHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lynn, county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful specification The present invention relates` more particularly to machines for grinding the faces of valves of internal combustion engines and it primarily aims to provide an electrical motor driven grinding mechanism of a compact arrangement which may be readily set up for use and connected to the ord1- nary electrical lig ting circuit for power and aunachine by the use of which valves may be quickly, easily and accurately ground or re-surfaced.
The invention has for a further object to provide a valve holding device or chuck for machines of this charactr which may be easily and readily adjusted so that the-face ofthe valve which is to be ground may at all times be retained in proper position with respect tothe grinding element without altering the positionor path of travel of the latter.
` With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction, arrangement, combination and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

From this' construction it is obvious that the chuck holder may be rotated upon the -block 4.and retained in its adjusted position by means of the nut 35. y The circular base member 33 may be provided with suitable graduation (not shown) so. that the adjusted position of the chuck may be readily ascertained.
Secured to and mounted upon this block 31 is an electric motor which may obtain its power from an ordinary lighting circuit- The armature'shaft of this motor has secured to one end thereof a grindina element 16 whereas, its opposite end has keyed thereto a pulley 12.
Formed with the chuck holder 5 is a depending arm 36 having a suitable bearing 37 arranged in the lower end thereof. Formed with the basev2 is a vertically eX- tending arm carrying a bearing 38 and journalled within these bearings 37 and 38V is a. shaft comprising two sections, 19 and 20 respectively.
These sections 19 and 20 may be connected by means of a slot and pin connection so that they may turn in unison. Freely mounted upon the section 20 of this shaft is a grooved pulley 13 and the latter is connected by means of a belt 30` to the pulley 12 carried by the armature shaft of the motor, so that when the motor 1 is set in motion the pulley Slidably vmounted upon this section 2O of the shaft is a sleeve 39 and this sleeve 39 is connected through a coil spring 17 to the this carriage 3 is provided 13 will revolve therewith.`

The section 19 of the shaft is flexible and isenclosed'by a flexible casing 18. Keyed to the outer end of this section 19 ofthe' i vshaft is a pulley 10 over which passes a belt 29 and this belt 29 also passes over the pulley 11.'.
The chuck comprises a head portion v6 'having 'a cylindrical spindle 43 formed therewith and this spindle 43 is journalled i within the sleeve 5. The outer ends of the chuck -jaws 33 are vof a conical configuration as is better illustrated in Figure 4, and are adapted to slide withina corresponding recess formed withinvthe head 6 so that l upon the longitudinal movement of these ranged between this jaws they may expand or be brought intol gripping engagement with the stems of the valves to be ground. The chuck may be then advanced or adjusted until the valve isin such a position that it will engage the grinding element 1G. The motor 1 is then set in motion and the lever 14 moved so that the clutch members will be brought into engagement whereby the spindle 43 will be setiii motion through the mechanism as heretobefore described. As the sleeve 44 carrying the valve stein is held in frictional contact with the spindle 43, by the adjustment of the hand wheel 9 the valve will also be rotated. By turning the hand wheels 7 and8 the chuck may be so adjusted as to bring the valve into and out of engagement with the grinding wheel 1G. When it is desired to remove the valve the clutch members are disengaged by moving the lever 14 thereby stopping the rotation of the valve and by adjusting the hand wheel 9 the chuck jaws will release the valve stem and as the block 27 is exerting the pressure upon the inner end of the valve stem its removal will be greatly facilitated.

A valve grinding machine comprising in combination a support, a rotatable screw mounted within said support, a cari'iage adapted to travel in a longitudinal direction upon said support and being operatively connected to said screw, a block slidably mounted upon said carriage, means for causing said block a sleeve rotatably supported upon said block, a spindle journalled within said sleeve, chuck jaws carried by said saindle, a hand wheel connected to said chuck jaws for adjusting the saine, a motor mounted upon said support,a grinding element carried by said motor, a flexible shaft arranged upon said support, means for operatively connecting one end of said shaft with said spindle, a clutch member for operativelv connecting said shaft with said motor and a lever pivotally ino'iinted upon said support for actuatin said .clutch member substantially as and inthe manner set forth.
