SHOEMAKERS DOUBLE LAST.
Application filed December To all whom it may concern:
li e it lniown that l, i/Vniinrsniiw Bonirowsin, a citizen of Poland, residing at West Vi illington, in the county of Tolland and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoemakers Double Lasts, of which the following'is a specification.
. This invention relates to shoemakers lasts, having more particular reference to alast designed prii'i'iarily for use in repairing the soles of shoes. j
The invention has for an object to provide a simple arrangement of parts adapted to permit of the ready transpositioning to and from operative positions of a pair of lasts of ditli'erent size and shape.
For further comprehension of the invention and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in wh ch the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawings is a side View, partly broken into longitudinal section, of a shoemakefls last constructed according to the invent-ion.

i As here embodied my improved last comprises a hollow standard ,10 having a widened base 11 provided with holes 12 to receive bolts or screws whereby it may be secured to the floor or to any desired part.
Rotatably mounted on this standard is a rectangular block 14, this block being here shown as fixed integrally on a circular neck 15 which rests on the standard 10, a fixed pin 16 extending downward from this neck into the standard, in which the pinfreely engages.
Extending horizontally through the block 14 is a circular bar 18 which is arranged for sliding movement in said block and projects at opposite ends therefrom. Secured rigidly to the forward end of the bar 18' is a pair of last arms 19 and 20 which project radially from the bar in a common plane and are disposed at right angles to one another. These arms have last heads 21 and 22 respectively, formed on their outer ends, these last heads being of different sizes, either one being adapted to be placed in operative position according to whether the work is being done on large or small. shoes.

To enable the last heads to be shifted, the bar l8 has a squared portion 25 .intermediate of its ends which engages in a complementary socket in the end of block 14 and is yieldingly held therein by a coiled expansion spring 26 located in a recess 27 in the block and bearing against a sleeve 28 fixed to the rear end of the bar 18. This sleeve projects slidably into the open end of the recess 27 and serves to guide and support the rear end of the bar 18.
To prevent any tendency of the bar 18 to move forwardly in the block 14 under the influence of any pulls or blows on the last heads in a direction longitudinally of the block, which might occur whilea shoe is beingworked on, the jloar 18 has a dimii'iished squared portion or neck 30 adj acent its front end which is adapted to be engaged to the end of an arm 31 hinged as at 32 to the front end of a forward projection 14 from the .lolock 14: to swing transversely of the bar,
this arm 31 having a squared socket in its. free end in which the squared neck 30 fits. The outer face of the arm 31 is covered by a disk 32 formed on the outer end of the neck 30. A peripheral groove is thus provided in the bar 18 in which the arm 31 engages.
In the use of the change the lasts, the arm 31 is swung upwardly to free it from the neck 30 of the bar 18. The latter is then pushed forward against spring 26 until the squared part 25 is clear of the block 14 and is then given a quarter turn in the proper direction and allower to move backward until the squared part 25 reengages in the block. The arm 30 is then swung into engagement with the neck 30, looking the bar 18 against longitudinal movement. Each of the last arms 19 and 20 is preferably so arranged 011 the bar 18 as to be upright when the last head carried thereby is in operative position, the larger last head 22 being shown in operative position in Fig. 2 and the smaller one in Fig. 3.
While I have herein described and illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed, and that various changes and modifications might be made thereinwithout departing fromthe spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letdevice, if it is desired to tors Patent or the United States is as follows:
1. In a shoemakers last, a block, a horizontal bar slidable in said block, a pair of last heads mounted on said bar and spaced from one another around said bar, and means for locking said bar in different adjusted positions, said means including co-operating elements 011 said bar and block adapted to be displaced by longitudinal movement of said bar, and an arm hinged to said block and adapted to engage a neck on said bar to hold the same against longitudinal movement.
2. In a shoemakers last, a block, a horizontal bar slidable in said block and presenting a squared portion engaging in a complementary socket in said block, a spring surrounding said bar and holding said squared portion of the bar in said socket, a pair of last arms fixed to said. bar and angularly spaced therearound, and last heads on the ends of said last arms.
8. In a shoemakers last, a block, a horizontal bar slidable in said block and presenting a squared portion engaging in a complementary socket in said block, a spring surrounding said bar and holding said squared portion of the bar in said socket, a pair of last arms fixed to said bar and angularly spaced therearound, and last heads on the ends of said last arms, said last arms extending at right angles to one another in a common plane.
4. In a shoemakers last, a block, a hori zontal bar slidable in said block and p resenting a squared portion engaging in a complementary socket in said block, a spring surrounding said bar and holding said squared portion of the bar in said socket, a pair oi' last arms fixed to said bar and angularly spaced therearound, and last heads on the ends of said last arms, said last arms extending at right angles to one another in a common plane, a squared neck on said bar, and an arm hinged to a projection on said block and presenting a squared recess in its end in which said neck engages, for the purpose set forth.
