Preferably the drive is of such construction that the plates P can he slipped endwise over the bearings and on or off either or both ends of the cylinder 1. The particular gearing between, or mechanism for driving, such cylinders forms no part of the present invention a'nd is not claimed herein.
' Owing to the small diameter of the plat cylinders for single-page tubular-plates, at highspeeds such cylinders if more than two pages long have a tendency to springer bulge at the center, such tendency being accentuated by the impression pressure, and this seriously affects the operation of the printing mechanism and the uniformity of the product. I found that such plate cylinders made out of solid hard steel if more than two pages long would thus spring at high speeds. Many attempts have been made toovercome this difiiculty, but heretofore none h'ave been practically. satisfactory; but
. present invention I have provided a means to overcome or prevent such springing or yielding of s uch plate cylinders and am enabled to make them four or more pages wide and to hold them accurately to their work, and prevent springing thereof either at high speeds or under high impression pressures. In the drawings the plate cylinder is shown as formed of two similar "ransversc sections 1*, 1 (see Fig. 3) which extend from the center outwardly. The inner ends of these sections 1 are axially bored to receive a steelshaft 3, which is disposed axially of the sections-Q13, 1 and connects and supports the inner ends thereof. 'This web connection between the bearing 4 and thebase J. in very strong and stiff and is not liable to spring or deflection because of its peculiar shape.
To facilitate assembling the parts thebearing 1 might be cut in half as indicated in Fig. 4-, the detachable half 4* of the bearing being rigidlyfastened to theother half of the bearing by tap bolts 4 as indi-' cated in the drawing.
The bearing 1 is supported directly in the axial line of the plate cylinder by anysnitaof the machine adjacent the plate cylinder (see Figs. 1 and 2), the base 1 of the hearing being secured to the inner side of this tie bar by any suitable means, bolts being indicated in the drawings.
Preferably tie 6 is cast hollow and has upper, lower and intermediate horizontal walls 6", 6 6 as indicated in Figs. 2 and 4t; and I prefer to make the tie about four times as wide as the diameter of the plate cylinder. This tie (S is secured between the side frames of the press in any suitable in anner, and preferably so that it lies practically horizontal and in the plane of the axes of the cylinders 1 and 2 and its inner side closely adjacent the plate cylinder 9 so that the impression thrust of the impression cylinder 2 is transmitted through the plate cylinder 1 and bearing l direct-.11 to the tie (5; such tie being sufficiently strong to withstand any practical impression pressure without deflection.
Thelarge tie 6 not only serves to support the intermediate bearing of the plate cylinder, but also serves as a convenient support for the inking mechanisms for the plate cylinder. The ink fountain, the ink (ll'lHH and system of inking rollers for the plate cylinder 1 may all be mounted upon the related tie 6 as indicated in Fig. 2. The inking mechanism may be like that shown in my Patent No. 1.3014191, of April 22, 191$), or of any other suitable kind and forms no part of the present invention.
The ends of the shaft sections 1. may be recessed to receive the .bushing, or the adjacent ends of the sections 1 may be reduced as at 1 to the diameter of the lnishing -l: and hardened steel bands 5 may be fitted onto the reduced ends 1 of the sections 1 and. secured thereto by any suitable means. said bands 5 projecting over the adjacent ends of the bearing L and almost conta ting with the web at of the hearing, so that the inner ends of the adjacent plates P project over the ends of the hearing l and are only separated by the usual and necessary margin required between side by side i1nprcs sions on the web or sheet.

The inner ends of the bands 5 or the sections 1 may be provided with exterior flanges 5 against which the inner ends of the two inner tubular plates P abut. as indicated in the drawing.

Furthermore I am enabled to make single page tubular plate cylinders fouror more pages wide, and to slip the tubular. plates thereon either from one or both ends, and
to have the plates spaced equally apart, and yet provide an intermediate bearing for the plate cylinder, which bearing issupported exterior to the plate cylinder by a web which is less in width than the necessary margin between adjacent impressions on the web.
' Furthermore by this invention with one tubular impression cylinder Ican print a web four or more pages wide before slitting it. Further by printing such wide webs I am enabled to greatly reduce the number of printing couples and inking mechanisms required in the forms of presses shown in my Patents Nos. 867,230 and 1,240,008 aforesaid. it i a a a This invention also enables me to print a four or more page wide web with singlepage-tubular plates, without severing the web prior to the printing thereof, which is a great advantage, insuring uniformity of travel of the web and proper positioning of the various impressions upon the web.

In the drawings I have simply shown one printing couple comprising a plate and impression cylinder and connecting mechanism, as the present invention relates particularly to the construction and support of the plate cylinder. In a perfected mechanism, such plate and impression cylinders will be dupli cated; and in a large press any desired num ber of'such printing couples, orperfecting mechanisms thereof can be employed according to the desired total capacity of the press.
What I claim is: I i 4 i 1. A cylinder for printing presses, comprising adjacent, sections arranged end to end, each section adapted to carry a removable :plate, and a bearing. member interposed between the adjacent ends of said sections having a narrow supporting web of less width than the margin between adjacent impressions extending out betweenthe sections.
2. A cylinder for rintin resses comprising shaft sections arranged end to end each section adapted to carry a removable pate and a bearing member-interposed between and supporting the adjacent ends of said sections and having a narrow supporting web of less width than the margin between adjacent impressions on the paper produced by adjacent plates, said supporting web extending out between the sections, the
inner; ends of the cylinder sections projecting over the ends of the bearing member.

A. cylinder for rotary printing presses, comprising adjacent sections arranged end to end, each section adapted to carry a removable plate; a bearingvmember concealed between the ends of and supporting said sections; said member having a support thinner than the required margin between adjacent plates on the cylinder and project ing between the sections and connected to a suitable fixed support.

In combination a cylinder for rotary web printing presses formed of adjacent sections arranged end to end; each section adapted to carry a removable plate; a stub shaft between and connecting the inner ends of said sections; a bearing member between the ends of the cylinder sections and supporting said shaft; said member having a supporting .web thinner than the required margin between adjacent plateson the cylinder and projecting between the sections and connected to a suitable support, substantially asdescribed; i

In combination a cylinder for printing presses, comprising end to end sections; a bearing member interposed between the adjacent ends of said sections and having a narrow supporting web extending out between the sections and attached to a rigid support, the inner ends of said cylinder sectionsbeing reduced adjacent the bearing member; and annular bands fitted to the reduced ends of the cylinder sections and projecting over the ends of the bearing member and closely adjacent to the supporting web of such member.

In combination a cylinder for single page tubular plate printing presses, comprising end to end sections; a bearing member interposed between the adjacent ends of said sections and having a narrow supporting web of less width than the margin be tween adjacent impressions on the paper produced by adjacent plates, and extending out between the sections and attached to a rigid support; the inner ends of the cylinder sections being reduced adjacent the bearing member; and annular bands fitted to the reduced ends of the cylinder sections and projecting over the ends of the bearing member closely adjacent to the supporting web of such member.

In combination a cylinder for rotary web printing presses, comprising similar end to end sections each section adapted to carry a removable plate; a stub shaft between and connecting the inner ends of said sections; a bearing memberfitted between the ends of the cylinder sections and supporting said shaft and having a supporting Web thinner than the required margin between adjacent plates on the cylinder projecting between the sections and connected to a suitable support.

In combination a cylinder for rotary web printing presses formed of similar transverse sections; a stub shaft between and connecting the inner ends of said sections; a bearing memberfitted between the ends of the cylinder sections and supporting said shaft; said member having a supporting web thinner than the required margin between adjacent plates on the cylinder, said web projecting between the sections and connected to a suitable support; and annular bands fitted to the ends of the cylinder sections and projecting; over the ends of the bearing member closely adjacent to the supportin web of such-member.

K cylinder for single page tubular plate rotary web printing presses, comprising similar end to end sections each section adapted to carry arernovable plate; a stub shaft between and connecting the inner ends of said sections; a bearing member fitted between the ends of the cylinder sections and supporting said shaft, the inner ends of the cylinder sections projecting over the ends of the bearing member; said bearing member having a supporting web thinner than the required margin between adjacent plates on the cylinder and projecting between the see tions and connected to a suitable support.

In combination a cylinder for single page tubular plate rotary web printing presses, comprising similar end to end sections; a stub shaft between and connecting the inner ends of said sections; a bearing member fitted between the ends of the cylinder sections and supporting said shaft; said bearing member having a supporting web thinner than the required margin between adjacent plates on the cylinder and projecting between the sections and connected to a suitable support; the inner ends of the cylinder sections being reduced adjacent the bearing member; and annular bands fitted to the reduced ends of the cylinder sections and projecting over the ends of the bearing member closely adjacent to the supporting web of such member.

A hearing member having a oylindrie longitudinally divided journal portion, concealed bolts uniting the parts of said journal portion a base portion, a narrow web connecting the cylindric portion with the base portion, the journal portion being separated from the base portion at each end by curved grooves or channels, the web portion separating such grooves and curved correspondingly with the curvature of the grooves.

In combination a cylinder for web printing presses, comprising similar sections arranged end to end; a stub shaft or journal connecting the inner ends of the sections; an annular bearing member fitted between the ends of the cylinder sections and supporting said shaft; said member having a supporting web thinner than the required margin between adjacent plates on the cylinder and projecting between the sections and connected to a suitable support; and annular bands fitted to the ends of the cylinder sections and projecting over the ends of the bearing member closely adjacent the supporting web of such member, said bands havlng ribs engaging corresponding grooves in the reduced ends of the sections.

In combination a single page tubular plate cylinder comprising similar sections arranged end to end; a stub shaft or ournal connecting the inner ends of the sections; the inner ends of the cylinder sections being reduced; an annular bearing member fitted between the ends of the cylinder sections and supporting said shaft; said member having a supporting web thinner than the required margin between adjacent plates on the cylinder and projecting between the sections and connected to a suitable support; and annular bands fitted to the reduced ends of the cylprising adjacent cylindric sections end to able plate and a supporting member iorsaid sections extending out between the adjacent ends of saidlsections and of less width than *the required margin between the impressions produced by the adjacent plates on the ad jacent ends of said sections.
18. A cylinder for printing presses, comprising end to end sections, each section adapted to carry a removable plate, a journal member between said sections, and a sup porting member engaging said ournal to support theadjacent ends ofsaid sections,
and extending out between the sections, said supporting member being of less width than i the margin between adjacent impressions onthe paper produced by the, plates on the adjacent ends of said sections.
19. in a web printing pressthe combination of an impression cylinder; a plate cyl inder comprising adjacent sections end to end, each section adapted to carry a removable plate; and a supporting member for said sections extending out between the adjacent ends of said sections and permitting a wide web to be fed between said cylinders prior to slitting the web.

Ina web printing press the combination of an impression cylinder; a plate cylinder comprising end to end sections, each section adapted to carry a removable plate; a stub shaft connecting said sections and a supporting member extending out between the sections; whereby a wide web can be passed between and printed by said sections prior to slitting the web. end, each section adapted to carry aremovprior to slitting the web.
22. In a web printing press the combination of an impression cylinder; a plate cylinder comprising end to end sections, each section adapted to carry a removable plate; and a stub shaft connecting said sections and a supporting member interposed between the adjacent ends of said sections and supporting said shaft and extending out between the sections, said bearing member being of less width than the margin between adjacent impressions on the web, whereby a wide web can be fed between said cylinders prior to slitting the Web.
