INVENTOR TORND' Patented Oct. 10, 1922.
UNITED STATES 1,4313% PATENT OFFICE.
MORRIS IRVIN GANS, OF LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA.
noon PLATE Ann sIenAL.
Application filed January 7, 1921. Serial No.435,682.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Monnis IRVIN GANs,
a citizen of the United States, residing at ,Lynchburg, in the county of Campbell and State of Virginia, have invented new and illuminated so as to be readily seen, the illuminating means further servingto illuminate a door or name plate, whereby the name of the occupant may be easily read.
A further object is the provision of a device of this character in which the name plate, signal controlling push button and source of light are combined within a single receptacle, which may be conveniently secured in position, means being provided for controlling the source of light independent of the push button, so that the former may remain lighted to render the name plate and push button easily discernible.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional view through a portion of a wall or other support with the invention applied thereto, the circuits of the electrical devices being shown in diagram.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the combined name plate, lamp and ushbutton.
' Figure 3 is an edge view of the same.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 2 with the lens and lens frame removed.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a support, which may be in the form of a wall, a panel included in a door frame, or any other suitable support.
Secured to the support 10 is a metallic base 1 plate 11 of suitable shape and size, the said base plate having secured thereto a frame .12, by means of fastening devices 13, so that the said frame may be removed if desired. This frame comprises a lens which is preferably of concavo-convex form and which is indicated at 14, the edges of this lens eXtending within the frame and bearing against a felt or similar gasket 15 and being held in position by a wire 16. 'This wire is located within a seat or groove 17 provided in the frame 12.
Secured to the base plate 11 is a socket 18, within which is removably positioned an electric bulb 19, the latter being supplied with current from any suitable source, for example the light circuit of the building.
When the bulb 19 is supplied with current from the light circuit of the building, thereis provided a transformer 20, to which con-' ductor wires 21 from the said light circuit are connected. A conductor 22 leads from the transformer to one terminal of the socket 18, while the other terminal of the same socket has connected thereto a conductor 23 which is connected to a switch 24. This switch is shown as a knife switch, but any desired form of switch may be substituted therefor. A conductor 25 leads from the switch back to the transformer 20. By this means the bulb 19 may be lighted or the light extinguished as desired and when lighted will illuminate the lens which is adapted to have imprinted thereon the name of the occupant of the building, the number of the buildingor any other desired information.
Also secured to the base plate 11 is a push button 26, to one terminal of which there is connected a conductor 27 which is in turn connected to a bell or other signal 28, while a conductor 29 connects the bell with the conductor 25 previously mentioned. The other terminal of the push button is connected to the conductor 22 by a conductor 30, so that by operating the push button a circuit will be completed through the bell 28. The plunger 31 of the push button projects through an opening 32 provided in the lens 14.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings that the invention provides a name plate which may be illuminated at w ll through the operation of the switch 24, so that the name of the occupant, the number of the building or other information upon the lens may be easily read. In addition, the bulb 19 provides .means whereby the location of the push button may be determined when it is desired to ring the bell.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the'scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is i i a 1. An illuminating device embodying a receptacle comprising a base, a frame remov ably secured thereto, a concavo-convex transparentopanel secured within the frame, said panel having an opening thereima push but- .ton operating withinothe opening and an illuminating element within the receptacle.
2. An illuminating device for door plates embodying a receptacle comprising a sub- 15 stantially flat base, an annular frame secured to said base and extending outwardly therefrom, an inwardly extending flange surrounding the outer edge of the frame, a transparent panel having its edges extending within said frame to close the outer end of the latter, said panel being provided with an opening for a push button, means engaging the frame and panel to hold the latter in position and an illuminating element within the receptacle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
MORRIS IRVIN GA'N S.
