Application iei December 30, 1921. Serial No. 525,999.
To all whom t may com-em.'
Be it known that` HYMAN ROSEN, declarant citizen of the United States, subject of the Government of Russia., residing at the city of New York, inthe county of Bronx and Sta-te of N ew York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Making Machines, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to button making machines, and is particularly directed to machines used in the manufacture of cloth covered sheet metal buttons.-
One object of this invention is to provide a button making machine of the character described which shall be adapted for securing a stem `to the b-utton simultaneously with its formation so that several buttons so formed may be held together by their stems to provide an ornamental cluster which may be used in trimming ladies apparel such as a dress or millinery.
Another -object thereof is toprovide a vbutton making machine of the character deiscribed which shall be adapted for making ,a continuous string of buttons lheld on a common stem, extending from the sides of the button.
A further object is to provide a button' making machine for buttons of the character described which shall be adapted for providing the button simultaneously with the forming of the button with .a stein or end whereby it may be attached to a 'garment or secured to another `button for the purpose of formingan ornamental decoration.
A still Vfurther object is to provide a niachine of the character described which shall be simple in construction and efficient in op eration to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will ip part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The button hereinshown and described is described and claimed in my co-pending aplication, Serial No. 577,209, filed in the nited States Patent Oiiice on 'the 24th day of July, 1922, and accordingly is notclaime'd herein.
With the above exception the invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinationsof elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described aiid of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims. In the accompanying drawings, in which is shown one of various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
ig. l is a side elevational vie'w partly in section showing the position of the upper and lower formers of the machine in readiness for the first step of the operation,
F ig. 2. is a similar side elevational view partly in cross-section showing the lower and middle formers in position for the se'cond step in the operation, and the upper former with one-half of the button therein resulting ation;
Fig. 3 is a side view partly in section showing the three formers in position for the third step in the operation and with a stem in place ready to be clamped in osition simultaneously with the closing o the two shellsof the button in operation;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of one type of intermediate former embodying the invention;
FigV 5 is a cross-sectional elevation of a modifiedintermediate former;
Fig. 6 is a detail view showing in section a complete button with stem extending therefrom as manufactured by the machine embodying this invention;
Fig. 7 1s a view showing an ornamental cluster made from buttons according to the present invention; and
Fig. 8 is a view showing a continuous string 'of 'buttons manufactured with the machine embodying this invention.
Fig. 9 shows the lower and intermediate from .the first step in the operformer in the position shown in Fig. 2 v
'lower former comprises a base i0 having a stepped portion Il1 from which upstands a plug 12. Slidably mounted on this plug is a holder 13, the vertical movement'of which is limited by a screw 12 extending into a slotted portion 14; of the plug, as willbe s Hight be "natie in the emweve fm-inn, l 1e to be enden il mai-ee set 'foy-h o?
