Be it known that we CI-mnLns HmnAnn and lVARREN Hrnnann, citizens or the United States, and residents, respectively, of Hudson Falls in the county of lVashington, and State of New York, and Fort Edward, in the county of l l ashington, and State of New York have invented a new andImproved ldim Tool, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has relation to tools and particularly refers to a rim tool tor automobile tii which is designezl as a means for facilitating the association and disasseciation of tires and rims in a simple expeditious and efficient manner.
Heretol ore tools of this character have been devised for this purpose, but have been found wanting in many respects due to the fact that they have failed to overcome certain contingencies. t is therefore the principal object of the present invention to produce a rim tool which will completely and effectually handle the rim to facilitate the disassociat-ion of the tire therewith by shifting and disengaging the locking means at the rim joint and contracting and holding the rim in contracted condition while the tire is removed; facilitating the association of the tire and rim by erianding the rim, and shifting and intercngaging the locking means at the joint.

The tool which constitutes the invention includes av pair of rim clan ping members dos ignated generally by the characters 10 and 11 which are connected together for relative movement. The member 10 comprises a base plate 12 provided on its under side with depending torwardly projecting laterally spaced arms 13 preferably forming integral elements thereof. The member 10 further includes clamping jaws 14; hinged to the opposite sides of the base plate 12 by a hinge pin 15 which passes through aligned pairs of knuckles 16 and 17 'lormed respec tively on the base plate and clamping j The upper extremity oi the jaw. 141- are pro vided with spaced pairs of rim engaging hooks 18 by means of which the member associated with the rim. A clamping bolt 19 is passed through aligned apertures 20 in the jaws lt for locking and retaining the rim engagaing hooks in clamping relation to the rim. T he inner or rear portions of the arms 13 are provided with aligned bearing openings 21 in which a transverse shaft 22 is mounted and upon which a sprocket wheel is arranged between the arms 13 and keyed as at 2% to the shaft. A. ratchet 25 is keyed to the shaft 22 at the outer side of one of the arms 13 and the shaft 22 proects therebeyond and is provided at its outer extreme end with a multi-ttaced extremity 26 with which a wrench or crank may be associated for rotating the shaft. The outer or forward tree extremities of the arms 13 are apertnred to receive a transverse stub shaft 28 upon which an idler roller 29 is mounted and arranged between the arm terminals and a sprocket chain 30 is trained over the sprocket wheel 23 and idler roller 29. A pawl 31 is pivotally mounted as at 32 on one of: the arms 13 and is normally engaged with the ratchet 25 by a lealt spring 33 to limit the rotation of the shalt for turning movement in one direrti a when engaged therewith. The pawl 31 is provided with a. pair o't spring engaging in s 3 1 and 35 in order to provide means for rcspc :tively throwing the pawl into and out oi" engagement with the teeth of the ratcnet when desired.
The member 11 comprises a base plate -10 which has hinged to the opposite side edges thereof. a pair of: clamping jaws 4-1 by means oi a hinge pin 522 which passes through aligned pairs of knuckles a3 and 4A formed respectively on the base plate and the clamping jaws. The upper extremity of the jaws -t1 are provided with spaced pairs of rim engaginghooks 4:5 by means of which the member associated. with the rim. In operation of the tool. when it is desired to remove the tire from the rim, the members 10 and 11 are attached to the rim A at opposite sides the joint B by engaging the clamping jaws 14 iand il therewith. In attaching the members to the rim. the link pin 52 which connects the arms 51 with the sprocket disposed at the o1 er portion oi the idler roller 29. The tool is then ready for operation to effect the removal of the tire by associating a wrench or crank with the multitaced extremity 26 of: the shaft 22 and rotating the same. The initial operation of the device by the movement of the link pin 52 around the idler roller 29 effects a relative separation oi": the ends of the rim to shil't the offset extremity F into a position to be removed from the slot 1). It will thus be seen that a rim tool has been provided for facilitating the association and disassociation of tires and rims in a. simple, expeditious and ellicient manner, together with means for colupensatiupior distorted rims.

A rim tool comprising; a pair of members adapted for detachable connection re spectively to the opposite ends of a split rim, a pair of spaced rotary guides carried by one of said members, an endless flexible element mounted for movement on said guides, a connection between said element and the opposite member for effecting respectively the contraction and expansion of the split rim upon movement of said flexible element in opposite directions, a positive driving connection between one o l' the rotary driving guides and the flexible element for eflecting movement of the flexible element upon manipulation 0i said guide, means for locking; said rotary guide to hold the flexible element against movement and the rim in its contracted condition, and means on the op posits member for compensating for the distortion of the rim ends.

A- tool for effecting the association and disassociation of a tire shoe or casing with a split rim, including a pair of members each provided with means for clamping the same respectively to the opposite extremities ble element mounted on one of the members for movement in opposite directions, spaced guide elements over which sziid flexible element is trained in its movement, and e @011- neetion between the opposite member and said flexible element.
