TANK.
Application filed. August 23, 1921.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, VinsrL C. Cnrrns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Tank, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a. metal tank, one of its objects being to provide a tank made out of rolled sheet metal, formed of sections and assembled in a simple and ef cient manner whereby the use of grooves, beads, and lugs is eliminated and the cost of the tank materially reduced.
Another obj ect is to provide a tank havingl simple means for sealing the joints, the number' of bolt holes being reduced to the minimum in the plates forming the walls of the tank.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement o-f parts and in y.the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
ln said drawings- Figure 1 is a transverse section through a tank embodying the present improve ments.
Figure 2 is an enlarged section on line 2-2, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an elevation of a portion of one of the joints of the tank, more especially the structure shown in Figure 2.
Figure a is a section on line 4-4, Figure 2.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the bottom of the tank which can be formed of galvanized sheet iron or the like and can be circular in form or can be made up of two or more segments. Bearing inwardly against the margin of this bottom is a series of segmental hoop sections Q. placed end to end and each of which is L-shaped in cross section so that the base 3 of the section will extend under the bottom 1 while the up standing ange 4 will project upwardly above the bottom. Each of the anges 3 Seriall No. 494,512.
may be provided at its center with an inwardly extending ear 5 while another ear 6 may be extended upwardly from the een ter of each flange e. lWhen the hoop sections 2 are assembledend to end they will fit snugly around the bottom l.. A ring 7 formed of segmental sections is fitted on the bottom and is adapted to abut at its outer edge against the inner surface of the wall 8 of the tankn This wall is made up of galvanized. sheet iron plates or any other suitable material which when set up on end will form a cylindrical tank with the edges of the plates 8 spaced apart and bearing against the inner surfaces of the flanges e. A segmental ring 9 `is fitted against the inner surfaces of the sections of the wall 8 and bears downwardly on the ring 7, it being understood that the joints in the ring 7 are placed between the ends of the sections of the hoop 2 while the ends of the sections of the segmental. ring 9 are likewise placed between the ends of the hoop sections. Thus lapped. joints will be provided between the parts and by extending bolts 10 through the flanges l, wall sections 8 ring 9 and by extending additional bolts 11 through the bases E, bottom 1 and rino; 'Z the parts may be held together securely. Cleats 12 are mounted on the outer sides of the wall sections 8 so as to cover the spaces between the plates, these cleats being mounted on the ears 6. Additional cleats 13 are arranged on the inner faces of the plates 8 so as to bridge across the spaces between the plates and rest at their lower ends on the ring 9.
Bolts 14C are extended through the spaces between the plates 8 and through the cleats. Gasket strips 15 of .rubber or any other suitable material are interposed between the cleats 12 and 13 and the plates 8 and by tightening the bolts the cleats will be drawn toward each other so as to compress the gasket strips upon the plates 8 and produce sealed joints. rlhe gasket strips 15 can also be exten ded along the edges of those portions of the plates 8 between the anges l and the ring sections 9. The bottom can be reenforced by a diametrically arranged metal cleat 16 interposed between and abutting against opposed portions of the ring 7 and another cleat 17 can be mounted on the lower surface of the bottom with its ends abutting against the ears 5. Bolts 18 can then be extended through these cleats and the bottom and tightened or, it the bottom i made up ot t regments the bolts can l extended between the segments as will b obvious,
It will be noted that all ot the joints ar lapped joints and that the ends of the cleat of every pair terminate at points t remote from each other so that lapped joints are produced and there is no danger ot leakage. l11 or example the cleat l2 is supported on the ear t) while the cleat l) extends baclr of and secured to the ear The same arrangement is followed with rete 1ence to the cleats 16 and l?. Fael'ng strips 19 can be interposed between the base and the ring i' so as to engage opposite faces ot the bottom l and similar packing strips 20 can also be interposed between the plates S and the flange fl and 9 respectively.
lt will be unde s" d that by constructing tanl; as het in described the boring ot holes in 'the parts is reduced to the minimum with a corresponding reduction in the cost ot the tank. Furthermore it becomes unnecessary to provide grooves and lugs. The tank can be readily set up without requiring the services ot skilled mechanic.
llVhat is claimed is l. it. sheet metal tanltincluding a bottom, a sectional ring secured to the lower sur- ;tace oit the bottom and having `u] i standing llanges at the outer edges ot the sections abutting against the bottom., a tlat sectional ring bearing on the bottom, wall plates standing on the bottom and interposed be tween the flanges and the margin of the flat ring, a sectional ring bearing on the tlat ring and against he inner surface of the wall plates, and means extending through the ri and plates for binding them together, each section of each ring lapping the joint between the sections of the opposed ring.
2. l metal tank comprising arcuate wall plates spaced apart at their edges, a sectional ring` comprising a base and a marginal flange, said sections being arcuate, a bottom mounted on the base of the ring, said "wallr plates being mounted on the bottom and inst the inner surface of the flange of the gg. a sectional Hat ring mounted on the lase and engaging the inner surfaces of the r lates, a sectional ring bearing on the and engaging the inner faces of the wall plates, means extending through the rings and plates for binding them together, each section ot each ring lapping the ends ol the sections ot the opposed ring, cleats mounted on the flange and bridging the faces between the wall plates, cleats mounted on the ring opposite the `flange and bridgl the spaces between the wall plates, and clamping means extending through the -ats and between the plates to hold said plates gripped between the cleats.
3. ln tank the combination with a ring compri i base and a marginal upstanding flange, of a bottom resting on the bases of the sections, arcuate wall plates spaced apart vand resting on the bottom and against the inner itacos ot the flanges, a sectional flat ring secured on the bottom and to the bases, an upstanding sectional ring mounted on the flat ring and engaging the inner surfaces of the arcuate plates, inner and outer cleats bridging the spaces between the plates and supported by the llanges and upstanding rinjs respectivelyT with their lower ends at dillerent elevations, packing `strips interposed between said cleats and the plates, and clamping means extending through the cleats and between the plates, each of the ring sections lapping the joints between the ends ot the sections of the ring cooperating therewith.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto atlixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
