l TOY.
Application filed Mayr, 1921, Esel-iai nojlieneaa T0 all 'whom t 'may' concer/fn Be it known that I, HanvnvrR. l-lArwARn,
a citizen of the United States, residing atl Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ghio, have invented new and useful Improveniente i rloys, of which the following is a specification.
ily present invention has reference to a balanced toy, and has for its object to produce a toy of this character provided with figures representing persons or animals and susceptible to both a swinging and a rotary movement, whereby certain of the figures will be caused to simulate pursuers and pursued.
A further object is to )roduce a balanced toy of an extremely simple construction, which may be easily operated and which will afford both instruction and amusement.
rlhe foregoing, and other objects which will appear the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative association of parts, such as is disclosed by the drar-.vings which accompany and which form part of this application.
ln the drawings Figure l is a side elevation of a toy in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
`Figure f3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2. Y
Figure 4l is a sectional view on the line li-1 of Figure l. I
Figure 5 is a detail side elevation, partly in section illustrating the manner in which the pointed member is received in the depression in the widened end of the rod 14.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral l designates a flat base piece which has arising therefrom a thin rod 2 that has its outer end pointed, as at 3.
The numeral 4 broadly indicates a frame which is il-shaped in plan. The side members of the frame are indicated by the numeral 5 respectively, the same having their confronting faces at their meeting ends beveled or cut angularly and connected together in any desired or preferred manner. rEhe sides, adjacent the front or pointed end of the frame are held in spaced relation by a transverse brace G. lThe ends of the side members 5 are provided with weights 7. Preferably the spread ends of the sides are provided with pockets 8 in which the weights? are concealed, thefsaid pockets having their outer portions closed by elements 9, and passing through these closures and engaging with the weights are longitudinally adjustable elements l0, whereby the weights may be brought toward the outer or inner ends of the pockets to properly weight the spread end of the frame.
The frame has on its top, at its outer pointed end figures ll which, in the present instance, represent a horse and a rider. rlhe side members of the frame, on their upper faces and at their weighted ends are provided with figures l2 which, in the present instance, represent running men.
Centrallyisecured to the pointedend of the frame, and also braced to the cross piece 6, as at 13, is a rod 14. vThis rod terminates inward of the open end of the frame, and the outer end of the said rod is flattened, as at 15 and may 'be provided, on its under face with a cup-shaped depression 16 to receive therein the pointed end 3 of the rod 2. When the frame rests on the rod the weights are properly adjusted so that the said frame will assume a horizontal position on the base. `The frame may be tilted, and being counter-balanced, will swing of its own accord, on the rod 2, for a comparatively long period of time. The frame may be turned horizontally on its pivotal support provided by the rod 2 and revolved so that the inner figures l2 will present lthe appearance of pursuingL the outer figures ll.
The toy is of an extremely simple construction, may be cheaply manufactured and marketed, and will, as previously stated, afford both amusement and instruction. The
fulcrum rod 2 is detachably associated with r fr:
l. A toy as herein described, including a substantially il-shaped frame having figures at the apex and on the ends thereof and having a rod centrally arranged therein, terminating in a widened portion having a cup-shaped depression, brace means between the arms of the frame and the said rod, a fulcrum member having a pointed end received in the cup-shaped depression ot' the rod, and Weighted means in the outer ends of the arms of the frame adjustable exteriorly thereof.
2. A toy, as herein described, comprising a substantially il-shaped frame, a rod arranged centrally between the arms of the frame, a brace disposed transversely between the arms of the frame and secured to the rod, a ulcrum member on which the outer end of the rod rests, the arms of the frame having their outer ends formed With pockets, and plates closing the pockets, screw members having outer headed ends journaled in the plates and in the inner Walls of the pockets, and Weights in the pockets having threaded bores engaged by the screws whereby said Weights may be adjusted longitudinally in said pockets.
ln testimony whereof l affix my signature.
