AUTOMATIC GAS VALVE.
To all whom I? may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM HANsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Gas Valves, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates generally to gas burners, and more particularly to an automatically operating device for regulating the flow of gaseous fuel to the burner of a water heater or steam generator, the principal ob-v ject of my invention being `to provide a relatively simple and practical form of gaseous fuel regulating and controldevice that will be positive in action, readily adjustable to suit differentconditions and requirements and said `device being wholly automatic in action `and very effective in performing its intended functions. c,
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts that will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which*- Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a gaseous fuel burner that is equipped with a regulating and control device of my improved construction.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the upper portion of a modified form of the device.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a practical embodiment of my invention: 10 designates a gas burner of the type ordinarily associated with a water heater or steam generator, said burner being arranged at the upper end of a short tubular member 11 and the latter being connected to the upper end of the vertical leg of an Lsection 12, the horizontal leg of which latter is adapted tobe connected to a fuel supply pipe v(not shown). Leading upwardly from the horizontal leg of the l.-connection 12 and terminating adjacent to the upper portion'of yburner '170,is a pilot. light tube 13 provided with a valve 111, and
seated in the horizontal leg of L-connection 12 is a screw 15 which may be adjusted to control the flow of gaseous fuel through the opening or passageway in said connection.
Formed in the passagewaythrough the connection 12 is a valve seat 16, and adapted to engage thereupon is the tapered upper end of a vertically disposed rod 17, the latter being: arranged for sliding movement through the lower portion of the lL-shaped connection 12 and operating vthrough a suitable gland 1S that is applied to said connection.
Secured in any suitable manner to the lower end of the vertical leg of the L-shaped connection 12 is a rectangular frame or yoke 19 in which isv arranged for rotary movementl a pair of vertically disposed rods 20, the lower portions of which are threaded as designated by 21. Arranged to slide freely cn the intermediate portions ofrods 2O and upon rod 17, is acrossbar 22, the same bearing against the under side of a collar such as 23 that is securedto rod 17.
BearingA against the underside of the end portions of cross bar 22 are the upper ends of compressed springs such 'as 24, the same encircling rods 20, and the lower ends of said springs rest upon vblocks 25 that are provided with threaded apertures which receive the threaded portions 21 of the rod 20. Blocks 25 are provided with threaded stems 26 that project outwardly through slots 27 in the upright side members of the yoke 19 and said stems receivingV winged nuts 28 and which latter, when tightened, lock the blocks in their vertically adjusted positions upon the threaded portions lof rods 20. By rotating the rods 20 the blocks 25 can be elevated or lowered, thereby regulating the tension of springs v241: and which latter normally eX- ertpressure to maintain the upper end of rod 17 in closed position upon seat 16.y
Depending from yoke or frame 19 is a cylindricalgblock 29 through which is formed a bearing 30 for the lower portion of rod 17, and the upper end; ofsaid block being provided with a suitable packing gland 31 through whichsaid rod operates.y vRemovably connected to the lower end of block 29 is the upper enCllofa `hollow cylindrical member 32, closedgatits lower end, and arranged for vertical movement within the chamber in said; cylinder is a piston 33 that is carried by the lower endof rod`17. For the purpose of limiting the downward movenient of rod 17 and the piston carried thereby7 an adjustable member such asa screw 34 is seated in the bottom plate ory wall of the cylinder and which screw is adapted to be engaged by the. lower end of rod 17 when the same moves downwardly to its limit of movement.
Projecting outwardly from the upper portion of cylinder 32 is a nipple 35 to which may be connected a water supply pipe (not shown), and formed below said nipple is a lug 36 through which is formed a substantially l -shaped passageway 37 the upper end of the vertical leg of which communi- Cates with the opening through nipple 35, and the inner end of the horizontal leg of said passageway 3T connnunicates with the central portion of the chamber within cylinder 32. Seated in the .lug 38 is a screw 33 the inner end of which is ada pted to project into the passageway 37 and said screw providing means for regulating the tlow of fluid through said pasa-geway.
Leading outwardly from 'the lower` portion of cylindrical member 32 and preferably oppositely disposed with respect to nipple 35, is a. nipple 39 to which may be connected a tubular member (not shown), and the inner end of the passageway through said nipple communicates with the centra-l portion of the chamber in said cylindrical member.
Formed on member 32 below the nipple 39, is a lug 40 through which is formed a substantially l.-shaped duct Lll, the upper end of the vertical leg of which communicates with the pasageway through nipple 39 and the inner end of the horizontal leg of said duct communicates with the lower portion of the chamber in cylinder 32.
Assuming that my improved gaseous fuel regulator is associated with a burner that is utilized for heating water as it passes through a coil or the lihe, the supply pipe for the water to be heated may be directly connected to nipple 35, and a pipe from nipple 39 may lead to the lower end of the heating coil, or a pipe from the upper end of the heating coil may be led to nipple and a hot water supply pipe led from nipple 39 to the point of use. ln either event, when the valve or faucet from which the hot water is drawn is opened, the pressure of the body of water below piston 33 is relieved or materially lowered with respect to the pressure of the water in cylinder 32 above said piston, and which latter pressure represents that of the source of supply, for instance, the street main. immediately upon the relieving of pressure in cylinder 32 below the piston 33, the latter will move downwardly in said cylinder as a result of the excess pressure in the upper portion of said cylinder, and this action draws rod 17 downwardly so as to open the fuel supply duct or passageway through l-Shaped connection l2, and the gaseous fuel issuing in et form from the jet openings in burner 19 will be ignited from the pilot light at the upper end of tube 13.
iis a result, the lnlrner will heat the water as it passes through the coil with which said burner is associated and the heated water passes to the point of use directly from the upper end of said coil or from said upper end through the tube or pipe connected to nipple 35, and from. 'thence through the chamber in cylinder 32 above the piston and from thence through nipple 39 and the pipe connected thereto.
lt will be understood that when piston 33 moves downward as just described, it will pass the inner end of the duct or passageway through nipple thereby establishing direct communication 'through cylinder 32 between nipples and 39, tnd in order to pei'- nlit the piston to continue move flownwardly in the cylinder while the inner end oit the passage way through nipple 39 is closed, the by-pass ll is provided and which latter permits the water below the piston to vllow outwardly into and through nipple 39 as piston 33 moves downward within its cylinder. CbviOusly, when the valve or faucet that is connected to the nipple 39 is closed, an equilibrium of pressure will be established in the cylinder 32, with the result that Vthe springs will act to elevate rod 1'? and piston 33 to their normal positions, thereby closing the gas inlet passageway through connection l2, with the result that the burner ceases to function.
lf, for any reason, there is an excess of pressure in the chamber below the piston 33 or in the connections to nipple 39, such encess pressure will pass through duct 37 and thus equalize with the pressure in the connections to nipple 35.
ln Fig. l have illustrated a modified form of the control device that is particularly intended for use in connection with steam generating devices wherein gas or liquid hydrocarbon is utilized as fuel, and in this form of device, the upper end of rod l? carries a valve Ll2 that is adapted to close an opening formed in a valve housing and 'to which housing connected fuel supply pipe l and a pipe l@ that leads to the burner in the boiler furnace.
' this form of device is used the pressure ot the steam is utilized for controlling the position of valve i2 with respect to its seat, and when such pressure is low the valve will be fully opened, thereby permitting a relatively large tlow of fuel to the burner furnace, and when such pressure increases the valve vill be gradually lowered onto its seat to cut ofi and reduce the How of fuel through the housing 4land correspondingly decreasing the amount of fuel delivered to the furnace.
ln the event that it is des the flow of water or other fluid through nipple 39, a screw such as 39 is seated in the side of said nipple and which screw may be ired to regulate adjusted so as to move its forward end into or out ot the passageway through said nipple.

l claim as my invention:
l. ln combination, a gas burner, av valve for controlling the l'ioiv oi fuel to the burner, a cylinder provided with inlet and discharge eorts, a piston Within the cylinder, a member operatively connecting the piston and valve, a cross member secured to the first member, rotatable members slidably receiving the second member, and means for urging the second member in one direction so as to normally close the valve and position said piston between said ports.
2. ln combination, a gas burner, a valve lor controlling the flow of fuel to the burner, a cylinder adapted to contain fluid and provided with inlet and discharge ports disposed in different eleva-tions, a piston Within the cylinder, a rod operatively connecting the piston and said valve, a yoke rigidly sustained on the cylinder, a cross bar secured to the rod Within the yoke, rods rotatively sustained in the yoke and slidably receiving the cross bar, and adjustable means for urging the cross bar yupwardly so as to normally close said valve and position said piston to prevent the tloiv oi fluid from the intake to the discharge ports.
ln combination, a gas burner, a valve for controlling the iovv of fuel to the burner, a cylinder adapted to contain fluid and provided with inlet and discharge ports disposed in different elevations, a piston Within the cylinder, a rod operatively connectingl the piston and said valve, a yoke rigidly sustained on the cylinder, a cross bar secured to the rod Within the yoke, rods rotatively sustained in the yoke and slidably receiving the cross bar, blocks threaded on the vertical rods, stems carriedby the blocks and engaging Within slots formed in the yoke, and springs interposed between the blocks and cross bar for urging the latter and consequently the lirst rod upwardly tor the purpose described.
