BOTTLE CLOSURE.
Application filed October 25, 1920.
' closure member which is built into the bottle neck when the bottle is manufactured, so that the closure member will at all times be in position to close the bottle and permit of easy access being had to the contents thereof.
Another object of my invention is to provide a receptacle with a closure member that is normally retained ina closed position to positively seal the outlet of the receptacle but permit of the receptacle being opened when it is desired to remove all or part of the contents thereof.
A further object of this invention is to furnish a bottle neck with a closure member.
having a cam or eccentric action relative to a gasket or packing member so that the gasket or packing member may be compressed to positively seal the bottle neck and exclude air therefrom.
The above and other objects are attained by a construction that will be hereinafter described in connection with the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bottle neck provided with a closure member in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view of a bottle neck and closure member showing the latter in a closed position and Fig. 41 is a side elevation of a detached closure member.
In the drawing, the reference numeral 1 denotes, by the way of an example, a bottle neck having a substantially spherical head 2 provided with a discharge or filling opening 3 which alines with the bottle neck 1. The head 2 is preferably oblate spherical so that the opening 3 may be inone of the flattened portions thereof and the other flattened portion of the head joins the bottle 1 neck 1 and at such juncture provides an annular inner head or flange 4 afiordlng an Serial No. 419,456.
The bottle neck 1 is molded or made of halves suitably connected together, and the inner walls of the head 2 are provided with diametrically opposed sockets or recesses 6 and 7 to receive the trunnions or pintle members 8 and 9 respectively of a closure member 10 having an opening or bore 11. The closure member 10 isalso oblate spherical in form with the opening or bore 11 connecting the flat faces thereof and corresponding in diameter to the diameter of the opening 3.
The trunnion member 8 is preferably integral with the closure member 10 and takes the form of a boss which will extend to the socket or recess 6 and serve as a pivot, and
this'trunnion member is provided with a radially disposed crank or handle 12 that extends through and protrudes from a segment shaped slot 13 in the head 2. The end of the crank or handle 12 is sufiiciently exposed to permit of it being gripped by the fingers and shifted in the slot 13 to oscillate or turn the closure member 10 to an open position, as shown in Fig. 2.
The trunnion member 9 is preferably in the form of a pin with one end thereof suitably anchored in the side wall of the closure member 10, and the opposite end thereof loosely or rotatably mounted in the inner wall of the recess or socket 7 so that the pin will be supported axially of the recess or socket. Encircling the pin within. the recess or socket is a coiled spring 14, which has one end thereof anchored in the wall of the closure member 10 and the opposite end thereof anchored in the inner wall of the recess or socket 7 with the spring 1 1 constantly under tension and holding the closure member 10 in a closed position,
which is defined by the crank or handle 12 l engaging an end wall of the slot 13. When in such position the axis of the opening 11 is at a right angle to the axis of the bottle neck 1, consequently the ends of the opening 11 are closed by the opposed walls of the head 2, as best shown in Fig. 3. The closure member is maintained in this position by the retractile force of the spring 14, but by gripping the crank or handle 12 the closure member may be. oscillated or partially ro- G a (time,
and the closure member 10 is made oi a sim-' ilar material with its walls snugly fitting aga nst the inner walls ot the bead in moui or making this closure member it is pro able to resort to some means by which the closure men'iber. when turned :trom an open position to a closed position, will con act the gasket or washer 6 l thus stablish a non-lealzable connection between the closure member 10 and the head or flange 4. This may be accomplished in two ways First, the trunnion members 8 and 9 may be placed off center and not at equatorial points relative to the oblate spherical closure member. Then, in turning the closure member it will have an eccentric action towards the gasket or washer 6 and compress the same on the seat 5. econd, the closure member 10 may have a wall thereof enlarged to produce a cam action when the cilia. ged wall is turned toward the gasket or washer 6, and in either instance, the gasket or Washer will be sufficiently compressed to insure a tight joint between the bottle neck and the closure member when the latter is in a closed position.
lit is thought that the operation and utility of my invention will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within. the scope of: the appended claim.
The combination of a bottle neck having a head provided with an axial opening and a slot in said head disposed in a plane parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bottle neck and segment shaped in elevation a closure member trunnioned in said bottle neck head and having an opening adapted to aline with the head opening, a coiled springat one of the trunnions of said closure member maintaining said closure member normally closed with the axis of its opening at an angle to the axis of the bottle neck and a handle carried by said closure member at the other trunnion thereoi and extending through the slot of said bottle neck head.
ln testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
