To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. LAnMoN'rH, a subject of the King of England, residing at Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anticreepers for Rail way Rails, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to anti-creeping devices of anchors for railway rails, and more particularly to a device for preventing creeping of the rails in either direction.
A primary ob ect or the invention is to provide a device which affords maximum anchorage by distributing the creeping forces of the rail over adjacent ties, thereby not only obtaining the advantage of additional ballast resistance afforded by more than one tie, but also more effectively checking the creeping movement of ihe rail in both directions. In that connection the invention contemplates a device which includes tie plates joined or connected in a thoroughly practical and reliable manner, thereby providing an anchor having adequate tiebearing surfaces, while the means for joining or connecting the tie-plates is connected to the rail web in such a way that the tendency oi the rail to move is transmitted directly to the tie-plates which are secured to the ties by a plurality of spikes or equivalent fastening A, further object of the invention is to provide an anti-creeping device that may be readily manufactured by rolling, or by utilizing readily and conveniently available materials, thereby effecting considerable economy of production, while at the same time providing a strong, durable and reliable device.
With the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in whichigure 1 is a side elevation of the im proved anti-creeper.

In carrying the present invention into effect it is proposed to provide an anti-creeper essentially comprising a pair of tie-plates T and T connected by an intermediate railengaging strap S which. may be connected to the web of the rail in such a manner as to effectually cause any creeping movement thereof to be transmitted directly to the tie-plates T and T. In its general aspect, therefore, the present invention aims to provide an anti-creeping device comprising a pair of tie-plates adapted to be positioned on acent ties and not only connected to each other, but also rigidly secured to the rail.
Ubvionsly, this general type of anticreeper may be produced in various ways, but a practical illustration thereof is shown in Figures 1 to 3 wherein the device is pref erably made by rolling proce I so that the tie-plates T and T and strap Fl are inte gral. That is to say, the tie-plate stock may be rolled in strips and then cut into the proper lengths, after which the central. portion thereof may be cut away leaving the marginal edge or rail-engaging strap S. This strap may then be bent upwardly from the plane of the base of the tie-plates until. the intermediate portion thereof assumes a vertical position parallel to the rail web. The bending up of this strap may be accomplished by any of the usual and well-known forging operations employed in the making of devices of this character, and, after the strap has been "formed, the web may be provided with a suitable opening 1 to receive a bolt 2 for fastening the same to the web 10 of the rail R.
In connection with the tie-plate portions T and T of the device, it will be observed that the same are provided with the parallel ribs 3 and 4 which receive the base of the rail therebetween. The purpose of these to the tie-plates.

If desired. the inventimi may be also carried out by utilizing separate previously formed tie-plates T in connection with a strap S of any suitable and conveniently available material, the opposite ends 9% of which may be connected to the outer flange portions T" of the tie-plates by a suitable welded joint as clearly shown in Figures 4; and 5 oi the drawings. A further modification oi the invention is shown in Figures 6 and 7 oi the drawings wherein it will be observed that the tie plates .7 are provided with the downturned tie abutting flanges 'l at their inner adjacent edges. thereby providing a relatively wide bearing against the edge of the ties which materiall assists in holdin the plates in position and relievingthe spi es or other tastenings oi? some of the shearing stress imposed thereon due to the tendency of the rail to move or creep.
