UNITED stares atraen EDWARD WALTER WOLFE KEENE, OF BRISTOL, ENGLAND.
FILTERING APPARATUS.
Application led April 20, 19,22. Serial No. 555,701.
To all lwhom 'it 'may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD WALTER WoLrn Krenn, a subject of the King of "Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at 15 to 19 Coronation Road, Bristol, in the county ot Gloucester, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Filtering` Apparatus (for which l have filed application in England March ll, 1921, ap-
plication No. 5097/22), of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to filtering `apparatus of the kind comprising a rotary member or members adapted to be partially submerged in the material to be liltered, and in which a partial vacuum is created for thc purpose of causing the solid or semi-solid `material to be removed, to adhere to the outer surface ol the liltering member or members and whereby compressed air may subsequently be admitted to the interior ot the rotary member or members to assist .in the removal of such adherent solid or semisolid material.
rlhe object of the present invention is to increase the effectiveness of filtering apparatus of the above kind by providing an improved iform of rotary valve, whereby the creation ot a vacuum and thev admission vot compressed air, water and/or other medium to the interior of the iltering members may be adequately controlled, and the invention consists in filtering apparatus ot the kind referred to having a rotary valve comprising a rotary ported member cooperating with a fixed member surrounding said rotary member and having one or more suitable outlets provided therein, and one or more adjustable sliding members located between the rotary member and the fixed member whereby the functions of the ports may be controlled and/or regulated.
The invention also consists in apparatus as set out in the preceding paragraph, in
which the valve is provided with suitablel .convenient mode ot carrying my invention into elfect: o
Figure l is a longitudinal section of a valve constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional elevation ot the valve on the line II--ll ot' Figure l.
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the complete valve.
In carrying my invention into eil'ect in one convenient manner, l form my improved valve with a rotary member a carried on a main shaft Z) and adapted to rotate therewith, the shaft primarily serving to carry the rotary liltering member on members. lhe rotary member a .is provided with a plurality ot axially arranged passages c commumcatingat one end with the radial ports d, the other end being adapted to ene'ao'e thc ends oit' the tubes e supported inotlie member f which is keyed or otherwise secured to the shaft t From this it will be seen that the rotary member a, tubes c and their support f and also the rotary i'iltering member or members are adapted to rotate with the shaft i rlhe ends oi? the axial passages c remote` 'trom the tubes c may, it necessary, be closed by means ot removable plugs.
The tubes e correspond in number and arial relationship to the separate and distinct sectors into which each of the rotary iiltering members is divided, each tube being connected in series with the corresponding sector in all the rotary,Y members.
Surrounding the rotary member fr is a fixed lioijlsing 72 which may be removably secured to the fixed port of the plumnxer block y' by means ot studs rr, an annular space Z serving as a space `for any suitable lorin ot packing between the lined housingl z, and thc rotary member a, the valve housing thus forming a gland and stulling box which may be tightened or adjusted in connection with the packing.
It necessary or desirable, the valve cover m may be so constructed as to co-operate with the rotary member cl to form an additional gland and stu'hng box at the iti-ont end of the valve housing.
The housing 71, is further provided with a cap or cover m secured thereto by means of studs a, which end cover offers the advantage that being readily removable it enables cleaning operations to be readily executed Without the necessity of dismantling the valve.
The cover m may also be provided with a suitable external bearing with the object of supporting the Weight of the housing h and thereby minimize Wear on the valve face.
The valve housing It is provided with one or more outlets (two being shown), the upper one at o functioningr as an outlet for Wash solution and an outlet p for filtrate, an air inlet g being also provided for breaking the vacuum when required, and an air outlet g for relieving filtrate suction.
In order that the valve may fulfil its functions the ports (l in the rotary member a are divided into sets for effecting the various controls, for example, the ports 2 are filtrate ports, the ports 3 low vacuum Wash solution ports, the port 4t is for admission of pres Sure air for removing material from the outer surface of the rotary filter members, and the port 5 is for pressure air exhaust.
In order that the functions of these various ports may be regulated I provide a. slide or other adjustable member r having ports fr', by which means the filtrate and wash solutions are separated and the quantity of either or both may be regulated, the second adjustable member s' havingr ports s serving to control the period of filtration, thus providing for differences in the character of the materials treated as, for example, those which cake rapidly and wash and dry slowl orvice versa.
As Wil be seen from the drawing these adjustable members are adapted to slide in an annular groove located between the rotary member a and the fixed housing h and are operated and fixed by links t cooperating with slots u in the valve cover m, the adjustments being made by means of the screwed links t passing through lugs u on the cover m and being secured thereto by means of nuts e.
It will be understood that the device is not to be limited to any particular form or instruction of filtering apparatus nor to any number of rotary members nor to any particular size or shape of saine, or the number of sectors or other shape into which each rotary member may be sub-divided, also the manner of connecting the valve to the rotary filtering members or their sectors and the means adapted for operating the adjustable slide members being varied as may be found expedient or desirable.
Furthermore, the provision of means for effecting the lubrication of the moving parts is to be made and various details of construction may be modified and various mechanical equivalents employed to the construction shoWn as may be found necessary to meet any particular practical requirements Which may have to be fulfilled.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by lietters Patent is l. In filtering apparatus of the type referred to, the provision of a rotary Vvalve comprising a rotary ported member, a fixed member co-operating with and surrounding said rotary member and having outlets provided therein and an adju-stable sliding member located between the rotary member and the fixed member and havingr ports whereby the functions of the ports of the rotary member may be controlled and regu lated, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. Filtering apparatus as claimed in the preceding claim, in which the valve is pro-- vided with a suitable adjustable packing); between the rotary and fixed members, substantially as described and `lor the purpose set forth.
il. Filtering apparatus as claimed in claim l, cbaracteri/.ml b v the provision oll a second adjustable sliding member adapted to regulate the period ol' filtration.
4. In filtering apparatus of the character described, a rotary valve comprising a rotary ported member, a fixed member co-operating with and surrounding said rotary member and having outlets therein, an adj ustable sliding member located between the rotary member and the fixed member having ports whereby the functions of certain ofthe ports` of the rotary member may be controlled, and a second adjustable sliding ported member associated with other of the ports of the rotary member to regulate the period of filtration.
In filtering apparatus of the character described, a rotary valve comprising a rotary ported member, a fixed member cooperatingr with and surrouiuling said rotary member and having outlets therein, an adjustable sliding member located between the rotary member and the fixed member having ports whereby the functions olf certain of the ports of the rotary member may be controlled, a second adjustable sliding ported member associated with other of the ports of the rotary member to regulate the period of filtration, and independent adjusting means for each adjustable sliding member.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
EDWARD WALTER WOLFE KEINE.
