Be it known that 1, JOHN STENZEL, Jr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Windsor, county of l Veld, and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Motors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide means for automatically cutting o f the supply of power to a motor when the same stops. This is particularly adaptable to use with electric motors, where the same are run for long periods of time and where the current from the main line is cut off and restored at intervals. Under these last-mentioned conditions motors are frequently 'urnt out when the flow of current is restored. This is a common occurrence, particularly where motors are used for pumping water for irrigation purposes.
Briefly the invention comprises the use or a governor which operates a lever or arm for the purpose of throwing out a switch. In the case of electric motors this switch will be the main switch which. supplies the current. In the case of gasoline motors, the switch will cut off the spark so that the engine will not run idle in the event that a power belt or the like has broken.

A main power shaft is shown provided with a pulley 12 to receive a belt 14, which in turn passes over a pulley 15 on a second shaft 110. If desired, the shaft 110 might be the main shaft, the pulleys and belt being omitted. The shaft 110 is provided with a governor of known type, comprising balls 16 and springs 18, a collar 20 slidable on the shaft 110 being connected with said springs. A yoke 22 engages in said slidable collar and is integral with an arm 2 pivoted at 25.

This arm 2% has a curved shoulder 124 as shown. The pivot 25 13 carried by a main framework 26, having a slot 28, which may be formed by a separate strip 29 of the frame as indicated. The upper portion of the slot 28 has an offsetsection 30, and an intermediate portion of the slot 28 has an offset section 32. A stop or shoulder 34 is located at the bottom of the slot. A bar 35 has one end movable in said slot, the other end being pivoted at 36 to the frame. The swinging end of the bar is adapted to seat in either of the offset slot portions 30 or 32. A spring 38 connected with the bar tends to draw said bar downward. A. cable. 40 is connected by means of a link l2 with a switch 44%, which may be mounted upon the wall or any other suitable support 415, the cable passing over a pulley 46 if the position of the switch requires.
In operation, the bar 35 has a swinging end placed manually in the offset slot portion 30, said bar resting upon the corresponding shoulder 130. In this position the arm 24 does not interfere with said bar 35. The motor is then started up and when under vay the bar 35 is then moved into the lower offset portion "32, resting upon the shoulder 132. Under these conditions the arm is withdrawn so that the curved shoulder does not interfere with the bar. 80 long as the motor is in operation and the shaft 110 is driven, the arm 2& will be withdrawn, as shown in Fig. 3. Should the current be shut off and the motor stopped, or should a drive belt or any other moving part break so that the shaft 110 is no longer rotated, the collar 20 will be forced by the governor to move the arm 2% into the position of Fig. i so that the shoulder 12% will push the bar 35 off the shoulder 132 and the spring 38 will. jerk said bar down to with draw the switch. The shoulder 124 is curved as shown in order that more vibration of the moving parts will not cause the arm 2& to displace the bar 35.
I claim:
1. In combination, a driven shaft, a governor connected therewith, an arm movable by said governor, a frame adjacent said arm and having a seat, a member adapted to rest on said seat when said shaft and governor move, power control means having connection with said member, said arm being adapted to force said member from said seat when the shaft and governor stop, whereby said member will release said power control.
2. In combination, a driven shaft, a governor connected therewith, a member movable by said governor, a frame having a slot provided with an offset seat adjacent said member, a bar adapted to engage in said seat and adapted to move in said-slot, a power control device having connection with said bar, said member being adapted to engage and force said bar-from said seat when the shaft and governor cease to move, whereby said bar will release said power control.
3. In combination, driven shaft, a governor connected therewith, an arm movable by said governor, a frame on which said arm is plvoted, said frame having a slot therein having an offsetseat, a bar movable in said I governor cease to rotate, a power control,
and a connection between said bar and said control, whereby saidcontrol w ll be released when said bar is unseated.
