Beit known that I, JOHN F. RING,'Jr., acitizen of ythe United States, residingat Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of -New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grease Pumps, of which the following'is a specification.
rThis invention 'relates to grease pumps, andvone of the objects ofthe invention is to provide an improved devicev for filling transmission casings, differential casings and the'like of motor vehicles and for lubricating parts of motors, machines and the like, which is so constructed lthat `the grease orI oils can be quickly and easilyforced from or into the same withoutany! inconvenience on the part of the operator Aand which en -P tirely eliminates the possibility ofthe grease or oils coming into contact with? the hands or clothingof the operator.
Another object of the inventionV is to provide an improved grease dispensingy device in which the amount o f grease beingdispensed or placed in the deviceicanbe accurately determined, therebyv insuring .that the correct amount of grease will be forced from the device to the parts being lubricated when the device is in operation.
Another object of the invention is to`pro vide an improved grease pump,-which has been especially designed to` supplant the grease pumps now on the market, in'which considerable kdilliculties are experienced in the lling of the same and determiningthe exact amount 'of grease contained therein or forced therefrom.
A still further object -of lthe invention is to provide an improved grease pump of thev .above character which is 'durable and etlicient in use, one that is simple and'easy to manufacture, and one which can beplaced upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, 'arrangement and formation of parts, as will behereinafter more' specifically described, claimed 'and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, in which drawings:

The'nozzle 19 may be provided with any suitable form of shut olf valve 20 so that after the desired amount of grease or oil has been forced vinto thepart to be lubricated, the saidvalve can be actuated ,so as to prevent-any further'flow of the oil therethrough. l
To provide means for lforcing the oil or grease Sinto or out of the cylindrical container, the .piston or 4plunger 15 is provided, which is ofy such asize as to snuglyflt the inner wall of the container. Theupper` or lower wall of the piston or plunger 15 lis The-axis of the plunger or piston 15'is'pro- 1 vided with a vertically disposed hollow nut 22 which receives the rotatable threaded shaft or screw 23. The threaded shaft 23 is arranged at the vertical aXis of the container and is rotatably mounted at its upper and lower ends in suitable bearings 24 and 25 carried respectively by the lower wall 6 and the partition plate 10. To prevent the rotation of the piston or plunger on the shaft 23 when the same is rotated by means hereinafter described, the same is provided with openings which are arranged on the oppositel sides of the shaft 23 and these openings slidably receive the tie rods 14;. Thus it can be seenthat the tie rods serve as a-dual function, namely, to hold the partition plate in place and to guide the plunger or piston in its sliding movement, against rotation. The means provided for operating the shaft 23 includes a shaft 28 which is arranged at right angles to the shaft 23 and this shaft 28 is removably arranged in the compartment 11 and has its terminals mounted in suitable openings 29 formed in the container 5. @ne end of the shaft is provided with an operating crank 30 while the opposite end.
is provided with a removable lock nut 31. rlhis shaft has removably secured thereto for rotation therewith a bevelled gear 32 which meshes with a bevelled gear 33 secured to the upper end of the shaft 23. Thus it can be seen that by rotating the crank 30 the shaft 23 will be rotated which will slide the piston or plunger 15 up or down in the container according to the direction of rotation of the crank. When it is desired to remove the shaft 28 so as to permit the partition plate 10 to be lifted out of the container, the retaining nut 31. is removed from the shaft and the means provided for holdingthe gear 32 on the shaft is removable. It is then merely necessary to slide the shaft 28 out of the bearing.
The top plate or cover 7 is also provided with a central bearing which slidably and rotatably supports a counter shaft 34, the loweil end of which is provided with a bevellled gear 35 which meshes with the bevelled gear 32. The bevelled gear 35 is normally held in mesh with the bevelled gear 32 by means of an expansion coil spring 26 which is interposed between the top plate 7 and the hub of the bevelled gear 35. The outer end of the shaft 34 has secured thereto for rotation therewith a pointer or indicator 36 which is adapted to cooperate with a plurality ofgraduations 37 on the top plate 7, which indicates the amount of grease being` forced from or sucked into the container.
In operation of the improved device, the nozzle 19 is inserted into the differential casing or other part which is to be lubricated, and the crank 30 is rotated which will force the plunger 15 vdownwardly and thus effectively push the grease from the container. As the shaft 23 is rotated the pointer 26 will be also rotated, and by glancing at the indicator and cooperating graduations the operator can at once determine the amount of grease which is being dispensed. The cover 7 is graduated so as to indicate when five poundsof the grease has been dispensed and when a fraction of this amount has been forced from the container and it is desired to move the pointer 36 back to the zero mark, it is merely necessary to lift the pointer 36 up which will move the gear 35 out of mesh with the gear 32. The shaft 34 can then be rotated so as to position the indicator at the zero point.
After the grease or oil has been dispensed from the container, it is merely necessary to stick the nozzle 19 in the original barrel containing the oil or grease and rotate the crank 30 in an opposite direction from which it was previously rotated. This will force the plunger 15 gradually upward which will create a suction in the container below the same and thus effectively suck the oil or grease into the container.
The lower wall 6 of the container is provided with three supporting legs 38 two of which are provided with casters 39 and it can be seen that the container can be moved around the leg which is not provided with a caster as a pivot point.
From the foregoing description it can be seen that an improved oil pump has been provided, in which after the oil or grease has been pumped from the original container, the same can be readily refilled by merely rotating the operating crank in a direction opposite to which it was operated for forcing the grease or oil therefrom.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention; but,
I claim: l
1. A grease dispensing device comprising a cylindrical container having an inlet and outlet opening formed in the bottom thereof, a removable partition wall carried by the upper end of the container, tie rods extending longitudinally through the container for holding the partition plate in position, a sliding plunger mounted in said container, the plunger being adapted to receive the rods whereby rotation of the plunger in the container is prevented, and means for moving the plunger up and down in the casing.
2. A gre-ase dispensing device comprising a cylindrical container, a partition plate in said containerdividing the same into a pair of compartments, a plunger slidably mounted in one of said compartments, tie rods arranged to hold said partition in place and the plunger against rotation in said container, and means arranged in the other compartment for actuating said plunger.
