FIREPLACE.
Application filed December 12, 1921. Serial is. 521,692:
T 0 all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JAom Bnonnr'r, a citi' zen of the United States", residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Im provements in Fireplaces, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to animprovement in open fire places, and more particularly to a fire place arranged in a division wall between rooms, and the primary object of the invention is the Construction and arrangement of parts whereby the grate basket may be moved on its support to arrange the same in either of the rooms.
It is a further object to produce in an open fire place construction, means between a fire place in a partition dividing two rooms in a building, on which grate basket is slidably supported whereby the grate may be moved thereon into either of said rooms, while centrally arranged in the fire place there is a slidable plate that closes the opening between the rooms, the guide means for the plate supporting thereon deflectors which not only directthe products of combustion into either of the fines for the fire place but also direct the heat units through the fire place opening into the room.
It is a further object to produce a fire place construction, whereby a grate basket may be arranged in either of two adjacent rooms, which will require less material'ln the construction thereof than is generally employed and which also shall be of a comparatively simple construction.
The foregoing, and other objects which will appear-as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and opera-- tive association of parts, such as is disclosed by the drawing which accompany and which. form part of this application.
In the drawing:'
Figure'l is a front elevation of the improvement.
Figurei is a sectional 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view 3-3 of Figure 1.
In the drawing the numeral 1 designates a wall between two rooms in a building. In the wall there is a centrally arranged main flue 3 provided with angle branches 1 and 5 View on the line on the line respectively which communicate with the top of open fire-places ,6 and 7 which are arranged in the respective-adjacentrooms 8 and 9 respectively. Adjacent to' the bot} tom of the respective fire places (Sand 7' and located near the sidewallsthereof there are spaced rails 11. respectively, the "said rails belng of a length equallingthat of the adjacent fire places 6 and 7. A partition 12 Y supports the rails 11 at the center thereof and provides a dividing .wall between the fire places at the lower portions thereof, the said rails having their outer'ends supported by suitable uprights 18.
The side walls at the center of the respective fire places Sand 7 are grooved vertically, as at 14:, the said grooves providing guideways for the edges of a division plate 15. The plate is reallyin the nature of a fire back and closes the communication between the respective fireplaces 6 and 7. In
a line with the opposedwalls provided by I the grooves 14 ,from adjacent to the top of the respective fire places 6 and 7 there are arranged outwardly inclined baflle or directing members 16 respectively against which the products of combustion from the firein the grate basket contact and are directed by one of the members 16 into the branches l or 5 and from thence into the main flue 6.
In addition to this, the deflectors 16 serve as a. means for preventing an excess amount of heat flowing directly through the flue, causing the same to be redirected into either ofthe rooms 8 or 9, in accordance with the arrangement of the grate ,basketm eltherof suchrooms a l The grate basket is indicated by thenumeral 17 and is received for slidable movement on the rails 11. The grate basket is' in the nature of a hollow rectangular member and may be provided with suitable means at the ends thereof whereby the same vmay be slid on the rails into either of the rooms after the partition plate 15. has been I movedvertically in its guide grooves. To
accomplishthis, the plate 15 is providedadjacent to its bottom with outstanding members 18 which have at their outer ends upward'ly directed rods 19 that have at their ends hand grips 20. The hand grips being arranged outward of the respective fire places are not liable to become unduly heat ed from the fire in the grate, and therefore the division plate 15 may be conveniently elevated to permit of the grate being slid into either of the fire places 6 or 7 to heat either of the rooms 8 or 9.
It is thought that the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawing will fully set forth the construction, operation and advantages of the improvement, and therefore further detailed description will not be attempted.
Having described the invention, 1 claim 1. In combination with a'division wall be tween two rooms having communicating fire places, and an angle branch flue at the top of each fireplace communicating with the main flue, of a grate slidably supported in either of the fire places, a vertically slidable plate providing a division between the fire places, means on the plate and arranged at the outer side of the fire places for moving the plate vertically, and angle deflectors in the respective lire places adjacent to the tops thereof.
2. Communicating fire places between a ljacent rooms having angle fines at the tops thereof communicating with the main tine, rails adjacent to the bottom and side walls of the fire places, a grate basket supported for slidable movement on the rails, the side walls of the fire places, above the rails being grooved vertically, a plate in said grooves providing a division plate between the respective fire places, means secured to the plate and disposed outward of the fire places for moving the plate vertically to tablish a communication between the respective fire places, and deflectorsat the center and adjacent to the top portions of the re spective fire places, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my si 'nature.
