To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARNOLD SCHKRER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hair Curler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in toilet devices and it pertains more particularly to a new and improved form of hair curler.

It is one of the primary objects of the invention to provide a hair curler in which the use of heat is entirely dispensed with.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a hair curling device in which the hair during the curling operation is subjected to pressure. I

It is a further object of the invention to provide a new and improved means capable of carrying out the curling operation while being worn upon a personshead.

With the above and other objects in view,

reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of the curling device in its disassembled condition;

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the manner of starting the curling operation;

Fig. 3 is a view in'elevation showing a further step in the formation of the curl;

Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the manner in which the curl is removed from the curling device;

Fig. 5 1s a transverse sectional view of one'form of curling device;

Fig. 6 is a similar view of a slightly modified form of curling device.

Referring more particularly to the draw ings, the curler comprises two members 10 and 11. The member 10 consists of a hollow or tubular member of soft pliable material, such, for example, as rubber tubing, and in one form of the invention the tube is provided with oppositely disposed slots 12 in the side walls thereof.- The other member 11 consists of a handle portion 13, from which projects two rigid parallel fingers 14.

These fingers'14 are spaced with relation to 7 one another, and their inner edges are cut away as indicated by the reference character 15 to provide a V-shaped entrant opening 16 therebetween.

The device operates in the following manner:

The parallel fingers 14 of the member 11 are lnserted through one end of the tubular member 10, as shown in Fig. 2, with the free I ends of the fingers 14 projecting through one of the slots 12 of the member 10. After this is done, the hair which is designated by the reference character A, is positioned between the fingers 14, and the member 11 is moved to a position where it will be in longitudinal alinement with the member 10 and the fingers 14 positioned within the tubular member 10. The hair is now wound upon the finger members 14, until all of the hair has been positioned within the tubular member 10. After this has been accomplished, the winding direction of the handle member 13 is reversed for one or more turns to allow the fingers 14 of the member 13 to be readily removable from the hair.

In carrying out the curling operation, several of the pliable tubular members 12 are employed, and are positioned about the head in the desired locations.

After the pliable members 10 have been in position a suflicient time to effectively curl the hair A, the members 10 are grasped bytheir ends and compressed as shown in Figure 4, thus spreadin the slots 12 to permit of the withdrawa of the hair A in curled form as designated by the reference character B in said figure. After thishas been done, the hair may be combed sufiiciently to give the effect desired.

In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 6, the pliable member 10 is provided with four slots; 18 in lieu of the two slots as shown in the preferred form of the'invention.

From the foregoing it is apparent thatthe present invention provides a hair-curling device in which the hair to be curled is rolled in curl form and is maintained in curl form under pressure a sufiicient time to set the curl therein, after which it may be removed from the forming member in the curled state. I Furthermore, a curler constructed m accordance with the present invention does not require the use of heat to efiectlvely carry out the curling operation.

I claim: 7 5 1. A hair curlin I device comprising a slotted flexible tubu ar member, and means for wrapping hair in curls within the tubular member through the slot thereof.

2. A hair curling. device comprising a 10 slotted tubular member, and means for wrapping the hair in a curl within the tubular member through the slots thereof.

3. In a hair-curling device, a. slotted tubular member of pliable material, a wrapping meinber adapted to receive the hair in wrapped relation thereabout and within the tubular member, said tubular member bein capable of distortion-to remove the curle hair through the slot thereof.
