UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM E. WOODARD, OF FOREST HILLS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR T0 FRANKLIN RAIL- WAY SUPPLY COMPANY, A CURPORATION OF DELAWARE.
TRUCK FOR RAILWAY VEHICLES.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. WOODARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Forest Hills, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trucks for Railway Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelates totrucks for railway vehicles and it is particularly useful in locomotive engine trucks. The invention has to do with that type of truck known as a lateral motion truck and is an improvement on the invention patented to me April 29, 1913, No. 1,060,222. 1
In the construction shown in such patent, centering rockers are interposed between the bolster and truck frame, the bolster having four lower surfaces contacting with four rocker surfaces, i. e., the bolster has four points of support. Difficulty has been encountered with this construction because of the inability of securing a perfect contact at the four points of support. This results, among other things, in uneven and twisting stresses on the parts and also in uneven wear, which latter is usually of such character as to increase the inequality and instabilityof the support. I have furthermore rouna'umt there is additional wear on the bearing surfaces resulting from the abrasive action when the bearing surfaces move on each other. y
The nature of the difiiculties above mentioned will be readily understood on considering the severe vibration" and pounding to which rolling stock of this character is subject.
One of the primary objects of my invention is to overcome the difiiculties referred to and to secure certain additional advantages which will be hereinafter pointed out more particularly.
I accomplish the foregoing by means of a construction, the preferred embodiments of which I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a truck embodying my inprovements'; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2- 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the bolster, drawn on an enlarged scale; Fig. 4 is a top plan view of an improved form of centering rocker forming a part of my invention; Fig. 5 is of Fig. 6; Fig. 6 is a section taken on the line 6-6of Fig. 5; and Fig. 7 is a section taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6 but illus trating the parts in another-position.
Referring now to Figs. 1 and 2, particuiarly, it will be seen that the truck is of usual construction and it will suflicefor the purposes of this specification to make reference to the center pin 7 the bolster A havinga center plate 8 for the reception of the center pin; and the transom or bolster support 9, extending between the side frames 10 of the truck.
Referring now to Figs. 3 and 5, particularly, it will be seen that the bolster A is constructed so as to have three depending centering rocker bearing portions (Z, 6, f,
with inverted V-shaped bearing surfaces 11.
The bearing portions 65 and e, as will be seen 011 inspection of Fig. 3,-are located at opposite edges of the bolster, on one side of the center line thereof and in substantial alinement. ranged on the other side of the center line of the bolster and comes opposite the space 9 between the bearingp'ortions dande. The bearing portion 7 is approximately equal to the combined dimensions of the portions d and 6 so that the total bearing surfacespresented are equal in area. Along their inner edges the portions 03 and e are provided with a-plurality of recesses or pockets 12, and the portion f has similar pockets at its ends, arranged in alinement with the pockets in the portions 65 and c. Y i
The construction of the centering rockers will: now be described. These rockers, indijournal portions 14 adapted to take seat in the seats 15 of bearing strips 16 supported in the centering rocker pocket 'ofthe bolster support. The rockers are ribbed longitudinally between channels; as indicated at 17 The third bearing portion f is ar I in Figsfi and 6, and they are transversely "three-point. support is provided for the bolster which, therefore, will; alwayshave a proper, stable support. It will also be noted that the construction is such that it is possible to use counterpart rockers, thus avoiding the necessity of making right and lefthand rockers. NVhere it is necessary to re cessthe rocker, as indicated at 20, in order to accommodate the pin 21, it will be seen that they maybe fitted into place by simply reversing a pair of rockers, end for end.
- It will be seen from. the foregoing that the support afforded by the arrangement described is such as to assure stability and to avoid excessive wear of uneven character as is noticeable where-the support is unstable. Furthermore, it will be seen that the life of 1 the parts is extended for when wear hasgone to undesirable lengths, fresh bearlng surfaces will be presented to the parts d, e and f by simply interchanging the rockers. The
excessive wear resulting from the abrasive action incidentto the rockers and bolsters shifting relative to one another during lateral motion, is obviatedby'the inter-engaging portions 12 and 13 which tend to produce a more orv less true rolling action, without slipping or relative shifting of bolster and "rockers.
40 sented by simply reversing the position of the bolster.. The arrangement is also such Fresh-bearing surfaces may bealso prethat practically 50% of the length of the rocker is'utilized for bearing surfaces, affording a material increase over older designs.
What I claim is:
i I 1.- In a lateral'motion railway vehicle truck, a bolster having three bearing surfacesifor centering rockers, two of said surfaces being on one side of the center line -.of the bolster and spaced apart and the third surface being-on the opposite side and ar ranged opposite the space between the other surfaces. 29Inv a lateral motion railway vehicle truck, a bolster having three bearing surfaces for centering rockers, arranged so that with twocenterlng rockers, two of the surfaces bear on one rocker and the third surface on theother rocker providing a threepoint support.
