METHOD OF MAKING- BEAM HEADS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK MossBERG, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Making Beam Heads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to heads for warpbeams, reels or the like, and to the method of constructing the same from sheet metal; and the invention has for its object to pro vide such a head by bending or swaging a sheet-metal disk into the desired shape and then connecting the other parts to the pre viously shaped disk, whereby an annular peripheral groove is formed in the head and by this construction such a grooved head is produced very rapidly, of maximum strength and of minimum weight and at the minimum expense.
With these and other objects in view, the. invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is an end elevation of my im proved beam head, illustrating the strip of metal bent into ring form and secured to the periphery of the disk, forming one side flange of the grooved portion.
\ Figure 2 is a side elevation showing the head portion as sectioned on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the strip of metal which is subsequently bent into ring shape to form one of the side flanges of the groove.
Figure 4 illustrates the strip of metal as bent into ring form with its ends abutting.
Figure 5 illustrates the general formation of the disk portion of the head, the periphcry of which is offset laterally and a ring of metal Welded to the inner edge of the offset portion forming an annular circumferential groove.
I have herein shown and described the construction of a head member which may be employed on beams, reels or other similar articles of manufacture, which head portion is formed b bending, swaging or otherwise forming t e bendable or ductile metal of the head into an annular groove 10 about the periphery of the head, the same being adapted to receive a friction band or belt to which tension may be applied for the purpose of preventing a too free rotation of the beam to Which the head is attached as the Warp or yarn is drawn from the body portion thereof.
With reference to the drawings, 11 designates the body or barrelportion of the beam or reel, which is preferably made in tubular form, the ends of which are secured to the opposite head member 12 thereof by means of bolts 13 or otherwise.
These head members are preferably constructed of a main plate 14 cut from sheet stock into disk form, the outer edge of this disk being turned, bent or swaged 0d at substantially a right angle to the plane of the disk forming a bottom wall 15 for the groove 10.
The outer edge 16 of this offturned portion is turned outwardly as illustrated in Figure 2, forming the outer side wall of the groove.
In order to form the inner side wall of this groove T preferably provide a strip of metal 17 of suitable cross section and roll the same into ring form as illustrated in Figure 4, welding together the abutting ends 19; I then place this ring 19 onto the inner edge of the ofitu'rned portion 15 of the head and Weld or otherwise secure the same into position thereon thereby providing an inner annular flange which completes the groove 10 about the periphery of the disk 14.
By this construction the beam head is formed very cheaply with the maximum strength and of the minimum weight.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The method of forming a beam or reel head, which consists in cutting sheet metal into disk form, turning the outer edge of said disk off at substantially a right angle to the plane of said disk forming the bottom wall of a groove, turning the edge of said first turned portion outwardly forming one side flange of the groove, and attaching a ring to the edge of said disk forming the other side flange of the groove.
2. The method of forming a beam or reel head, which consists in cutting sheet metal into disk form, swaging the outer edge of first turned portion outwardly substantially parallel with the plane of the disk forming one side flange of a groove, bending a strip of metal into a ring and welding said ring to the edge of said disk forming the other side flange of the groove.
