UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BOTTLE.
Application filed October 26, 1920 Serial No. 419,613.
T 0 (all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES Josnrn MrosoN, of louth Brisbane, Queensland, residing at Hawthorne Street, South Brisbane, in the State of Queensland and Commonwealth of Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Bottles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in bottles and stoppers therefor.
Bottles with which crown seals are used for stoppering are very subject to damage when crimping on the crown seals and the crown seals when once used are rendered useless for further service; the object of the present invention is to provide a bottle in which the top of the neck is in no wise weakened, in which when fitting on the stoppers the bottle neck will receive no damage.
The invention consists in making the neck of the bottle plain without any shoulder or neck mould and the wall of the neck at the top, of the same thickness all round, no part thereof being cutaway, thus providing a perfectly flat and uniform seat for a cork disc.
Around the neck are four L shaped raised moulds on to which fits a rigid metallic stamped cap formed with L shaped impressions on its inner surface of suiiicient width to slip over the L shaped moulds; the horizontally disposed impressions are adapted to fit tightly over the feet of the L shaped moulds.
The legs of the L shaped moulds are tapered from about their centres, upwards towards the top of the bottle neck to a vanishing point which permits of the stamped cap sliding freely over the L shaped moulds, which when pushed down below the feet of same and turned from right to left is locked on to the neck of the bottle.
The caps are provided with paper and cork discs and when fitted to the bottles form a perfectly gas tight joint.
I have found from experience that four raised moulds around the neck of the bottle are efficient, but I do not confine myself to any specific number which may vary accordmg to'the size of the bottle.
To fully describe the invention reference is now made to the drawings in which Fig. 1, is a perspective view of the stamped metallic cap.
l l g. 2, perspective view of the bottle.
Big. 3, perspective view of bottle neck fitted with cap.
A is the bottle, B the cap, C, L shaped raised moulds the legs of which are tapered towards the top of the bottle and D the impressions 1n the cap fitting over the raised moulds C which on turning from right to left grip the underside of the feet forming a gas tight bayonet joint.
hat I do claim as my invention and de sue to secure by Letters Patent is 1. r3. closure for bottles, comprising, in combination, a bottle having a plurality of raised portions around its neck, said portions tapering from approximately the center thereof toward the upper end of the bottle neck, and a stamped cap provided with radial recesses opening at its interior and adapted to slip over the raised portions, said cap forming when rotated in one direction a gas-tight joint, the raised portions and recesses having abutting vertical walls adapted to form a positive stop for limiting rotation of the cap relative to the bottle.
2. A closure for bottles, comprising, in combination, a bottle having a plurality of L-shaped raised portions around the neck thereof, said portions tapering from approximately the centers thereof toward the upper end of the bottle neck, and a stamped cap provided with radial recesses opening at its interior and corresponding in shape with said raised portions, said cap being adapted to slip over the raised portions and forming when rotated in one direction a gastight bayonet joint, the vertical portions of the raised portions and recesses forming a posi tive stop for limiting rotation of the cap relative to the bottle.
3. A closure for bottles, comprising, in combination, a bottle having a plurality of 2c v I 1,428,969
raised projections on its exterior periphery, and a stamped metal cap adapted to closely engage the bottle neck and having intaglio recesses corresponding in shape With said projections, said recesses being adapted to permit rotary movement of the cap relatively to'the bottle neck and having Walls adapted axial movement thereof.
In testimony whereof, he afllxeshis signature,
JAMES JOSEPH MIDSON.
