ADDING MACHINE.
Application illed February lfy 1921. Serial No. 445,434.
To all whom it muy concern Be it known that-,1, Hanan LANDSIEDEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwood, Hamilton C0unty,'and State of Ohio, have invented a new 'and useful Adding Machine, of which the'following is a specication. l v
This invention relates to adding machines.
An object of the invention-is to provide an improvement to facilitate the use and operation of addingl machines in the addition of parallel columns off'numbers. In and-*listing machine the numbers are `listed in 'parallel columns on a sheet of paper without'. the necessity of moving the paper or :platen laterally, leaving it in a single laterally adjusted position andV operating the paper feed mechanism only to feed the paper properly in line spacing. M
M present invention relates specially to mac ines of the simplified key-board type,
also known as ten key machines, and for convenience the' invention 'is' illustrated in a Dalton adding machine which is of the sim litied ften key type.
eretofore work of this character has been performed on the Dalton' adding machine y striking on the key-board'the item to be added in the left hand column and then setting up the correct nuinbr of ciphers to form a space between the-leftand right hand columns, and then striking on the keyboard the item for the right hand column; althou h it has been unnecessary to print the cip ers between the two'olumns. This work involves mental concentration and effort in order to set up the correct number of ciphers between the two-items so that the items will be listed ini'the proper denominational orders in parallel columns. The present invention overcomes this trouble and eliminates the necessity 'of counting the ciphers to be set up between the parallel columns and makes it possible to add two columns of'items side by side without giving thought to the numericalv order of the amounts to be added. This vdesirable and Jadvantageous result is obtained by the provision of mechanism which renders it unnecessa to set up or strike on the keyboard ciphers corresponding to the spaces between the parallel columns of items. n the use of the invention for adding items m parallel columns in machines of the Dalan incident to ton type an item to be added in the left hand column is first set up in the laterally movable diii'erential mechanism; after which the differential mechanism is tabulated or shifted-to the proper position to add the digits of the item in their proper denominational orders. The machine is then operated'to add the item, after which the item for the right hand'column is set up in the differentia mechanism in the usual way, and added. The paper carriage is held from lateral movement and also is prevented from feedingthe-paperin line spacing while the item is being entered in the left hand column, so that the two itemsone in the left hand column and the'other in the right hand columnare listed on the same line. As the adding and listing of the'item inthe right hand column, the platen is operated to feed the paper in line spacinready for the next` items of the series.
n'additional object of the invention is to provide means for controlling the paper feed mechanism in order to obtain the desired re'sult so that` items in the right and left liand columns will be listed in proper alinement. For this urpose in the specific embodiment of .the invention shown, the paper :feed mechanism is held ino erative when the item in the left hand co umn is listed, although the order ofthe operation may be varied if desired. In this connection it may be stated that an important feature of the invention comprises mechanism for feeding the paper one line space for eac two movements or operations of the listing mechanism.
Another object of the invention is to rovide equipment for returning the mac ine to normal; that is, for disab ing that part of the present invention which causes the paper to be moved only one v'line space for each two operations of the machine. This result is obtained by the use of a normalizing lever which, when adjusted in one position, permits the machine to be used for ordinary purposes of an adding' and listing machine; and which, in another adjuste position, causes the papler to bel moved a single line space for eac two operations of the machine.
While the present invention has been disclosed in a machine containing differential mechanism of the Dalton type, it is clear that the invention is not limited to use in :.f rrr association with Dalton differential uiechnism. Obviously, the invention maybe used in`connection with lthe ditferentialrmechanism `of' other ."mach'iiiesnsucli; lvfr instance, 5 as the Sundstr'nd machine', the Moon-Hopkins machine` and Hoch machine, andothefrs.

The `arrangement-is such that the carriage niust be moved 4at least one step'or'sp'ace towardhigher numerical orders, thus re- Z'O'Lquiring at least one digit to be set upin the differential mechanism, before the rack 35 4is "in" position tobe engaged by the pawl 34.

tion occurs. I provide In order to prevent operation of the typecarriers and racks in lower denominational orders so-that the proper item will belisted and added when the above-described operamechanism for raising or setting up a suicient number of zero or cipher stops to prevent operation of all the racks and type-carriers in lower denominational orders at the right of the item which is being listed in column. The usual spilt mechanism of the machine will prevent printing of the oiphers at the right of the item being listed, but as such split mechanism is well known and constitutes no part '65 vention the same is not described.

restored to its the left hand' riage of the present in-A In order to set up zero or cipher stops for the purpose stated, I provide anarm 36 having one end pivotally supported at 37v and extending across the latch plate 25, so that when `said latchjplate is raised by operation-of the tabulator or shift key 20, said arm 36vwill be raised. The arm 36 is provided with a projecting portion 38 having a curved part 39 Shaped so as to enable raised thereby as the diierential carriage moves toward higher denominational orders, as a result of the operation of thetabulator or shift key 20. Thus a sufficient number 4of'zero'stops are raised to prevent movement of-all of the type-carriers and racks `at the right of the itembeing listed and added -in the let handV column.
As before `mentionedp-lmy invention iucludes meansfor disconnecting-the escapement pawls 4-from the segment 3 so as to permit thedifferential.carriagelo move to position to-present the set upstops in proper ui-red to-cause dedA properly in the left hand column. For .this purpose portion 40v engaging Vunder a part of an arm 41 lwhich is pivotally supported at 42. A projection 43 on the arm. 41. engages withlthe :universal escapement bariSwhich escapement pawls 4 by means of aconnection 44'. Consequently, when-the arm36 is raised by .operation of the tabulator or shift key the pawls 4 are disengaged from the segment 3, thus permitting the diferential carriage l to, be
Amoved-'the-ull `distance required; movebeing stopped when the end wall of the differential carriage has thisv manner it 1s intended that the adding and listing mechanisms of the machine be` operated in the usual way, withV the result that the item that had been set up in the differential mechanism will be listed and added properly an incident to the ldifferential carriage is starting point and cleared in the well understood manner.
The pawl 34 extends downwardly a sufficient distance to-engage the upper end of the latch plate 25 and the force or powero the movement of the differential carriage is suiiicient to` overcome the power of the spring 28 and to disengage the latch plate 25 from the latch block 27 permitting the key lever 21 to return to its normal posi tion, and the pawl 34 to drop out of engagement with the rack 35. leaving the carree to be returned to its-starting When this occurs the arm 36 its lower position, permitting the the Segment of the carriage such -operation' position. moves to escapement pawls 4 to re-engage to Contact therewith and be ment 3. The machine is then ready for operation in the usual way.
As previously mentioned in this specifica` tion, the present invention includes mecha nism for controlling the paper feed mechanism to prevent movement of the paper in line spaein when the machine is operated to add an list an item in the left hand column. By preventing line space movement of the paper when an item is listed in the left hand column, the paper is rew tained stationary so that the item listed in 'the-'righthandcolumn will be listed in horizontal alinement with the 'item in the left hand column. B reference to Fig. 5 it will be seen 4that tliere are ltwo' parallel -vertical columns of items separatedby a noticeable space,=and`that the items'in the two vertical columns are horizontally alined. Thisl is the result of preventin Vline space operation when items are list-e in Vthe left hand column.' I will now proceed to a defscription'ofthe mechanism for preventing loperation' 'of the line space mechanism-when an 'item is added or listed inthe left'column and which permits the-paper to be moved in line 'spacing as an incident to the' listing of thc item in the right hand column.V
As before mentioned the operation of the line space mechanism may be prevented by interfering with or preventing loperation of the arm'16' to :the extentnecessary to effectoperation of the' line 'space mechanism. To
limit movement ofthe 16 inorder to lprevent operation of the line space mechanism I provide an Aabutment which.v as shown, is in the 'form of an arm 45 (Fig. 1) 'su 'ported onta-shaft 46 and being movable rom the? position vshown in solid lines (in which the arm 16 is free to operate) to the' position-shown indotted lines in which the arm 16 will strike the abutment and be stopped as required to prevent the line space mechanism from functioning. A link 47 connects an extension of the arm 45 with one arm of a bell crank lever 48 which is pivoted on a support 49. The other'arm of the bell crank lever 48 engages in a slot in a sliding plate 50 which is supported-for sliding movements near the base of the machine. The plate -50 is capable of movementl in forward and rearward directions and is actuated in a rearward direction by a spring 51. A roll 52 on the plate 50 operates against a cam member 53 attached to the shaft 5 or the segment 3. The construction and arrangement are such that when the differential carriage is tabulated or shifted ,to a' position to list an item or number in the left hand column, the roll 52 will pass froin the shoulder 54 of the cam, thus permitting the spring 51 to move the plate 50 rearwardly. This rearward movement of the plate 50 draws the lower arm of the bell crank lever 48 rearwardly as a result of which the abutment arm 45 is raised from listing of the item in the right hand columns. This result is obtai'ned'because when an item is listed in the right hand-columnthe roll 52 is against the :cam 53 which holds .the lower arm of the lever 48 in a forward position in opposition to 5l. ll/VhenA the lowerarm; .of the.lever'48 is in its forward position theabutment arm 45 is out' ofwthe' path 'o'fmovement ofthe 'arm==16 leavingr said-arm I16 free to.move to operate the line spacing,r mechanism. i
My inventior'ralso includes means forfnormalizing the machine by 'disablingthe mechanism for preventing operation of the' line space mechanism so as to enable the.l line space mechanism to operate'whenever any,
item is listed. whether the item'be listed in one column or the other. The line-space mechanism will -be permitted Ato operate if th(l abutment Aarm 45 (Fig.' l) be held out sol the power ofthe spring,.,5
of the path of movement of the arm 16. ThesplOO abutment 45 may be 'held ,outiof the path of movement of the'arm'l by the' construction shown. For this purpose I lprovide a 4slidin g link 55 having ya finger 56 arranged to engage with a'slioulder 57 on, the plate' 50.7105
and to hold said plate 50 in :itsiforward position, when, the link 55 i's heldin its'forward position. The forward end of the. link 55 is connected to one arm 58 of a lever which is pivoted upon a support 59. .The i other arm 60 of said'lever'extends through a slotted plate 61 conveniently arranged,
near the keylboard of the machine. The plate 6l has a longitudinal slot 62 through which the lever arm 60 extends.' A notch; 63 is at the 'forward end of said slot and a similar notch 64 isat the rear end of said slot. The lever arm is' suficiently'resilient to permit movement thereof from the notch 63 to the notch 64 'and vice versa. By en(-` gaginfz the lever `arm4 60 in the notch 64 at the rear end of the slot 62. as shown, the link 55 will be retained in its rearward adjustment to permit movement of the plate 50, so that when the machine is operatedA 63 the link) to return to its st artin r position and permitting lsaid element to e disengaged from said carriage.
