Application led November 2, i921. Serial No. 512,294.
T 0 all wlw-m t may concern Be it known that l, ETI-IAN I. Donne, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful lfmproveinents in Stay-Bolt Structures for Boilers; and l do hereby declare the following` to be a full, clear, and exact description or the invention, suoli as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilersV-one object of the invention being to provide simple and elicient bearing and closure devices for staybolt structures which may be quickly applied to a boiler sheet.v y
A further object is to so construct a twopart bearing member and a bolt head that the former may be effectually held in position against outward movement, by the boiler sheet, and sustained `against inward movement by co-operation of the cap or closure on said bearing member, with the outer itace of the boiler sheet.`
`With these and other objects in View, the' invention consists in certain novel teatures ol construction and combinations oi? parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figures '1 and 2 are sectional views takenl at right angles to each other and illustrating,A an ein bodiment of my invention. ligure 3 is a plan view of. the twopart bearing member, and Figure Ll is an end view showing,` the bolt head.
The outer sheet of a boiler is represented at l and provided with a cylindrical hole 2 for the accommodationof the bearing devices and bolt head mounted therein as more specifically hereinafter described.
rl`he bearing member ilor the bolt head' comprises two members fl-3 each oi which is formed with a partial rounded bearing` :tace el ior the rounded portion of the head 5 ot a staybolt G. The bolt head 5 is formed with a transverse, wedge-shaped recess 'T and the respective members oit the bearing sleeve are provided with inwardly projecting),` arms 8 which, when the bearingsleeve is assembled, abut against each other as shown in Figures l and 3, and said arms are provided with wedge-shaped depending portions 8 which enter the wedge-shaped recess in the bolt. The said wedge-shaped recess 7 in the bolt may extend downwardly (as seen in Figure 2) below the head of the bolt and said recess has such proportions relatively to the wedge-shaped depending portions 8a of the bearing sleeve members thaty said bolt head may have suflicient freedom oit movement when in use without hindrance 'from said wedge-shaped portions 8a.
Each member of the bearing sleeve eX- tends inwardly beyond the inner face of the boiler sheet and is provided with a flange 9 r which underlies said inner face and the sleeve members are thus prevented from outward movement. The outer ends of the sleeve members project beyond the outer face oi' the boiler sheet and are threaded externally as indicated at l0 to receive the internally threaded portion of a cap or closure ll. The edge of the closure ll is cooperable with the boiler sheet to sustain any pulling strain which might be brought to bear by the bolt on the bearing sleeve and between said edge of the cap or closure and the outer 'face of the boiler sheet, a washer l2 may be interposed.
Having itully described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, oit a two part bearing` member passing` through said opening and adapted to engage the inner ilace oit the boiler sheet, the outer ends ol the parts of said bearing member proparts cooperable with the inner face oit the boiler sheet, a cap or closure threaded on the two-part bearing member and cooperable with. the boiler sheet, a stavbolt having a bolt head is permitted to have freedom of head mounted in the parts of said two-part movement in the bearing member. 10 bearing member and having a transverse In testimony whereof7 l have signed this recess, arms projecting inwardly from the specification in the presence of a subscribing respective parts of the bearing member, and Witness.
