IMPROVEMENT IN LOCOMOTIVE SMOKE-STACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,851, dated September 16, 1873 application filed August 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES HUGHES, of Scranton, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Oone for Locomotive SmokeStack, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a vertical central section of a locomotive smoke-stack with my improved cone, and Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the cone.

rIhe object of my invention is to provide the smoke-stack of locomotives with an improved cone by which the draft is increased and the rapid wearing out of parts of the stack by the exhaust steam prevented.
In the cones hitherto used the exhaust steam strikes the cone, then spreads outwardly and strikes the sides of the smoke-stack with full force, wearing out that part of the stack in short time. The steam escapes then along the circumference of the netting or bonnet,-
leaving the central part inoperative and creating a kind of vacuum which is detrimental to the draft as it tends to prevent the free escape of the steam.
My invention, instead of being formed of a cone with one continuous surface, consists of fiat plates and rings of varying sizes, which are placed above each other in such a manner that the steam cannot pass through without striking the plates and rings, varying thereby the direction of the steam and distributing it equally so that it will pass out from the stack without impinging on the sides of the same and bringing the bonnet into use over its whole surface. The draft is regulated by making the top plate and ring adjustable on the central standard.
In the drawing, A represents the smokestack ofthe locomotive; B, the cone which is attached to the upper bulging part of the same by supporting rods or braces a, which are applied in suitable manner. Cone B consists of one or more circular plates, C, which carry centrally the vertical standard D, and, by means of side-supporting pieces b, one or more rings, E, of gradually-increasing diameter. The inner edges of rings E are turned up or iianged to assist the passage of the steam. The upper end of standard D is threaded, and carries a smaller top disk, F, with a ring, G, connected thereto by arms d, which may be raised' and lowered for regulating the draft by the screw-nuts f. Ring G is of smaller diam-v eter than the inner diameter of the uppermost ring E. The exhaust steam strikes the lower plate or disk C and ring E, passing through the inside of the rings E, and around the same, as indicated by arrows in Fig.1, so that the steam, is distributed uniformly over the bonnet and increases the draft. The diameter of the outer ring of the cone should be of larger size than that of the straight part of the smoke-stack to prevent the direct impinging of the steam on the bonnet and the cutting out of that part of it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The cone B, consisting of plates C, rings E, standard D with regulating top disk F, and ring G, arranged and constructed as described.
