Application mea :une 7, 1921. i serial No. 475,588.
To all lwhom t may concern: v,
Be it known that I, Cmrronn R'. DUMBLE, citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Arlington, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Removable Labels for Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
In pneumatic carrier systems of the kind -employing carriers which are transmitted through pneumatic, tubes, it is customary to apply identification numbers or other characters or marks tothe several carriers to inl' 'dicate particular stations or routes in the system to which' the several carriers belong,
or to indicate particular classes of' ltransactions for whlch the carriers are used. When the identifying mark or index is permanently affixed, as by stamping it on the carrier, as has heretofore been the practice, a change of marking-or indexing cannot readily be made. It 1soften desirableto be able to change the identifying marks when the carriers are to be used 'at different stations, or for different kinds of transactions, or for other reasons, and the principal object of the present invention is to provide a removable and replaceable identification label for carriers of the kind referred to, which can be readily applied and removed, and which will not interfere with the opening or closing of the carrier nor with the transit thereof through the pneumatic tubes.
In lthe accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention embodied in a carrier of a well known type for use in pneumatic carrier systems,
Fig. l is a front elevation showing the carrier closed; l
Fig. 2 'is a Ifront elevation showing the carrier open;
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-'3 of Fig. l;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the identification label removed from the carrier.
The carrier hereinv shown consists of an inner cylindrical casing l and an outer -cylindrical casing 2, the former being'closely fitted within the latter, and the two casings being adapted for limited, relative, rotary movement. ,l The innercasing 1 is connected to one of the felt covered heads 3, and the i outer casing 2 is connected to the other felt heads' vand 4, one with each hand, the casungsmay be turned relatively to each other to. open and close the carrier.
The inner vcasing l is provided with an opening 5 and the outer casin 2 is provided with a similar opening 6. hese openings are out ofv alinement when the carrier is closed as shown in Fig. l, but are adapted to be brought into register with each other to open the carrier, as shown in Fig. 2, when the two casings are relatively rotated. There are suitable stops (not shown) vfor limiting the relative movement of the casings in each direction. The parts thus far described may be of usual construction, and 1n and -of themselves vdo not constitute the present invention.
A second aperture 9 is provided in that part of the wall of the inner casing 1 which closes the opening 6 of the outer casing, and whose outer surface 7 is exposed through the opening 6 when the carrier is closed and is concealed by the outer casing when the carrier is open. 1
A label 8 of paper, sheet Celluloid or other suitable'material, is removably secured to the inner caslng over the aperture 9, so that one side of the label will be visible through side of the label will be visible through both openings 5 and 6 of the inner and outer casings respectively when the carrier is open, the label then appearing on the inside of the carrier. Thus a single removable label may be employed which is visible when the carrier is either open or closed. It will be understood that the label will bear the same identifying numerals or other characters on both sides.
The label, being carried by the inner casing, will not interfere in any way' with the ltransit of the carrier through the tubes, and is visible through the common opening 6 whether the carrier is open or closed.
Y The means em loyed for holding the label in position shouljd also be such as to make easy its insertion and removal, and such as not to interfere with the openin an/d closing of the carrier. To this end t e aperture 9 is formed in a depressed portion I4 of the wall of the inner casing 1, so that when the label 8 lies in the depression' and extends across the opening 9, its-outer face will be y substantially flush with or slightly below the cylindrical surface of the casing 1. 'ljhus j the label will present no salient or projectthrough which Athe ends of the -label 8 project; andv accidental displacement of they label is prevented by .stops V12 and 13, which may be struck up rom-the metal of theinner casing, to engagethe ends ofthe label.
The label 8' being made preferably of i sheet Celluloid; cr the like, possesses sulicient inherentresilieneyjso lthat it will be yieldingly but'remov'ablyheld in position when applied,` tothe`v carrier and bent to conform. substantiallyftc'the curvature of V, mounted in said .depression'visible from both sides of'said inner casing wall, and lyin below they outer surface of the wal. p
l claim: 1... A carrier" comprising` relatively movable inner and .outer casings having openings adapted to be moved into and out .of alinement by the relativefr'novement of the the carrier wall as shown in Figure 3. f
