COATED NAIL.

COATED NAIL.
Application filed February 23, 1922. Serial No. 538,526.
T 0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, DoUoLAs Mourns, a citizen of the United. States, resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Coated Nails, of which the following is-a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention relates to .cement coated nails, its object being to provide a construction in which the properties of the cement may be more efiicaciously applied and through the medium of which the nail will perform its function in a more efficient manner. The said invention consists of means hereinafter fully described and particularly set forth in the claims.
More specifically my invention consists in forming the nail at any suitable time during or after the process of its manufacture, with one or more depressions intersecting its outer metallic surface, and then covering the nail body with'a suitable cement, thus filling these depressions with such cement.
I am. of course, aware that nails have heretofore been coated with cementv for the purpose of holding them in place.
In the annexed drawings, Fig. 1 represents a side elevation of a wire nail embodying my invention, the cement coating being indicated by dotted lines.
Fig. 2 represents a cross section of such nail.
Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of a modified form of a nail embodying my invention, the cement coating being shown in dotted lines.
Fig. 4 represents a side elevation of a second modified form of nail embodying my invention, the cement coating being shown in dotted lines.
Referring first to the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the illustrated embodiment of my invention comprises a nail, ordinarily made of wire, the outer metallic surface of which is intersected by one or more longitudinal depressions or grooves 1 of suitable depth and width. Thesegro0.ves extend substantially throughout the length of the body of the nail as'sho'wn in Fig. 1, and may be formed by means of a suitable die or other device during the process of its manufacture,
those skilled in the art.
- stage of the or thereafter, as will be well understood by The nail after being so formed is then dipped into a suitable cement which forms upon the exterior of a coating 2. This coating fills the grooves and is ofv regular exterior cross sectional contour as shown in Fig. 2 whereby the metallic surface-lying between the grooves is also covered.
By providing the grooves it will be seen that when. the nail is driven that portion of the cement which resides in the grooves is not detached from the main body of the nail but remains in place thus forming a continuous permanently located bonding medium throughout the length of the body. Furthermore a nail so formed may be withdrawn and again used without destroying the function of all the cement, that portion of the lat-. ter lying in the grooves remaining attached tothe body of the nail and being capable of repeating the exercise of its function.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modified'form of applying the above described principle of construction, by providing a multiplicity of circumferential grooves 3, and Fig. 4 shows a further modification which consists in forming a single helical groove 4 which ex tends from end to end of said body portion of the nail.
It will be obvious that the same advantages which are obtained by providing the longitudinal grooves are similarly secured in the modified forms.
As will be readily understood in the art of making nails, these various types of grooves. may be formed at any convenient manufacture of the metallic portion of the nail, or the nails after being formed in the usual waymay be passed on to a special machine or device for forming such grooves.
A cement made of any suitable or well known materials heretofore used as an exterior nail coating cement, may be used in depressions intersecting its outer metallic surface, said depressions being filled with suitable cement.
3. As a new article'of manufacture, a nail having its body portion depressed in a substantially uniform manner throughout its length, such depressed portion being filled with a suitable cement. I Y 4. As a new article of manufacture a nail provided with a continuous depression ex; tending throughout the length of the nail body, and provided with an outer coating of cementcompletely covering said outer surface and filling said depression.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a'nail having its body portion provided with a continuous longitudinal depression upon its exterior surface, and a cement filling said depression.
6. As a new article of manufacture, a nail having its bodyportion provided with a longitudinal depression extending throughout its entire length, and provided with an outer coating of cement completely covering the outer surface of said body portion and filling said depression.
\ Signed by me this 14th day of February,
DOUGLAS MORRIS.
