The precise nature of" my invention will be best understood by reference to the yaccompanying drawings which will now be described, it being premised however, various changes may be made inthe details of construction and the general arrangement ofthe parts without departing vfrom the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims. l
In the drawings the reference character 2 the oil saver which is supported bymeans of the flexible device 3 fromthe that end 0f the jib crane 4. The saver 2 comprises two half sections 8, which are hinged to each other by means of lugs having a hinge pin extending therethrough. 9 is provided with an eye.10 to which the exible connection' is connected.- Each of the sections 8 is provided with a recess 11 at thetop thereof, as well as a recess 12 in the lower end thereof. Seated within the recesses 11 and 12 of each section are similar vsemi-cylindrical packing rings or members The upper end ofthe .hinge pin` 13 and 14,v the width of the vpacking rings l 13 being very much less than the width of the packing rings 14 in the direction of the axis of the saver. One of the sections 8 of thecasing is provided with longitudinal recesses 15, which extend from the recess 11 to the recess 12, and seated within these recesses. 15 are iexible packing members 16.
One of the sections 8 of the casing is prolvided with an outlet `17, between the packing members 13 and 14, to which is connected a flexible hose 18 for conveying the oil to any suitable source; .Pivotally connected to one of the sections 8 of the casing,
is a locking lever 19 having a recess 20 therein for engaging a cam projection 21 on the other section l8 of the casing for clamping the casing about the tubing to be drawn.
The operation of the device is as follows: The tubing is raised by means of the usual elevatorto bring a coupling member, such `as 22, to the position shown in Figures 1 the well casing 25 and 3, and supported on by means of another elevator 26. The casing 2 is then securely clamped about the coupling member 22 and the the tubing. When the casing 2 is clamped in position, the packing member 13 will form atight joint about the portion 7 of the tubing, whilel the packing members 14 will forma tight joint about 'the coupling member 22, and at the same time the packbeween the packing members 13 and 14. The portion 7 can'then be freely rotated to disconnect it from the coupling member 22 as the frictional engagement between the portion 7 and the packing 13 is very much portion 7 of l members 16 w1ll prevent any leakage less .than the frictionalengagement between the oil saver is opened and swung to the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, the pulling device is then connected to the elevator 26, below the coupling 22.` The tubing is then raised to bring the next coupling vmember 22 to be disconnected to its proper position with relation 'to the'saver,wh1ch is again clamped about the tubing as before described.
The' advantages of my invention lresult from lthe provision of an oil Isaver having separable sections, so arranged that a greater amount of friction will be -created between the packing members which engage the lower portion of the tubing, than that between the upper packing members and the tubing whereby the `portion of the tubing,
vbelow the oil saver is rigidly held against rotation while the upper portion can be readily rotated lto uncouple the tubing and also to permit the upper portion to be moved relatively to the 'lower portion to drain the oil therefrom. Also from the provision of a saver whose lo-wer packing members are of greater area thanthe upper packing members, whereby' the lower portion ofthe well casing or tubing will be held against rotation when the upperl portion is rotated to uncouple the same.
. Still a further advantage of my invention results from `an improved means for sup` porting the saver at a predetermined point above the mounting level, which means is sol arranged that the saver can readily be swung into operative position with relation vto the well tubing to be drawn.
I claim:
1. An oil saver having a plurality of separable sections, packing members in each end of said sections adapted to engage casing portions of different diameters, theA width of the contacting surfaces of the packing members at one end of the saver being materially greater than the widthr of the contacting surfaces of the packing niembers at the other end of the saver, said packing members of greater width being effective for preventing rotation of the portion of the casing engaged thereby during rotation of the portion of the casing engaged by the other packing members, and means for locking said sections about the casing to be drawn. f
2. As an article of manufacture, a sectional oil saver having packing members in the opposite ends thereof, said packing members in one end of the saver having a width at least twice that of the packing members in the other end of the saver, whereby a greater clamping action is eXerted adjacent oneI end of the saver` than the other, the clamping action exerted by the members of greater width being effective .for preventing rotation of the portion of the casing engaged thereby during rotation of the portion of the casing engaged by the members of lesser width, substantially as described.
