COAL JIG.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 5,1920.
1,427,651,l I Patented Aug. 29, 1922,
A NORA/EY CII UNITED sTATes sereni* JOHN J. STEINBAVCH. OF SCRANTON. lDENNSYLiTABl.
NEERING COMPANY, OF HZLETON, PENNSYLVNI., at. GORPORATEON 0F PENN- SYLVANIA.
COAL SIG;
application and may 5,
`to produce a combined reciprocating and oscillatory motion; that is, a` gyratory motion. lviore speciiically, my invention has for its objectito provide an improvement in the means Ytor holding and guiding the movements of the lower ends or" the bars or like devices by means ot which the jig pan is supported upon eccentrics or other actuating means upon the actuating shaft, the said endsv terminating a distance below the said pan. By thus holding` the lower ends of said bars or other like devices, or by otherwise holding the jig pan, rotation of the said eccentrics or equivalents therefor upon and trom which the pan is suspended, a gyratory movement oi.` the said pan is effected.
I have not undertaken to set forth and enumerate all oit the objects and advantages of myy invention, but these wili be pointed out in the detailed description thereof which follows or will be apparent from such description.
In order that my invention may be readily understood and its practical advantages comprehended and fully appreciated, reference may be had to the accompanying' drawingin which I have illustrated one form ot embodiment thereof. It will be understood, however, that changes in the details ot construction Inay be made within the scope of the claims without departing from my said invention. A
ln the drawing:
` Fig. l is a longitudinal, sectional view of a portion of a coal jig apparatus taken on the line 1 1 oi' Fig. 2 and embodying my invention; and
Fig. Q, is a transverse, sectional View taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. i.
Referring to the drawing: l designates the bottom members, 2 the upright end members and 3 the side members of a frame structure upon which the operative parts of a jig Specification of Lettera Eatent.
` structure are supported.

designates the side and bottoni walls of a portion of a sheet metal tank which is adapted to hold water.
5S designates a ig nan situated in the upper piu'tionoi' the said tank and into which iinture of coal, slate. etc. adapted to he uischa" ed and in which the coal is separated trom the slate, rock and other matter, which, it allowed te remain therein, would be objectionable. i
For a tull description of a coaljig oi the `character indicated herein and oi` parts associated with the pan, reference may be had to United States patent to Henry lV. rallier, h'o. 1,055,731, granted March li,
The opposite sides oit the pan 5 are secured. to hars 'which are connected with eccentricy straps T sup'iorted upon eccentrics 8, which in turn are supported upon a shaft 9. rlhe hars 6 are extended beyond the lower side ci? the pan 5 and such extensions are braced by means of the inclined brace bars i0, the upper ends ot which are secured by rivets to the opposite sides of the panand their lower, inner ends to the lower end portions oit the supporting)` bars G. l2 designates holding and guiding bars pivotally supported at their outer ends upon the inner ends of adjustable screw threaded rods 13. The inner end of each ot the bars 'i2 is biturcated as indicated to 'torna a clcvis le, the opposite sides ot' which are situated upon the opposite sides ott the lower ends ot the bars 6 and '1.0. The opposite sides of the said clevis at their inner ends are provided with perforations 'which are in alinement with Vperforations through the lower end portions of the bars 6 and l0, and the several parts 6, l0 and le are secured together by means of a bolt or clevis pin i6 extending therethrough. It will be seen, therefore, that the inner ends oit the holding and guiding bars l2 are pivotally connected to the lower end portions of the bars 6 and 10.
In the construction shown. the adjustabile screw threaded rods i3 extend through the end wall and a. cross tie i7 extending between the end posts 2 at one end of the. :trame structure and adjustahly secured and held in position thereon by means oi the wedge-shaped washers 18 and the nuts 19.
it will be observed 'th at in the construction as shown the jig pan 5 is slightly tilted. If
cia
desired the position of the pan wit-li respect to a horizontal plane may be var'ed by adjusting the screw threaded rods 3.55. tlucli adjustment may be effected by adjusting the nuts and washers 1S and 19. By adjusting these screw threaded rods outwardly, the tilt oft the jig pan would be increased, and by adjusting them inwardly the tilt not only would be decreasd but it' desired, the adjustment may be extended to a point to cause a tilting ot the jig pan in the opposite direction troni that in which it is shown in Fig. l of the drawing.
Although, as illustrated. in the drawing, each oit the bars G is extended and the inner swinging ends of the rods or bars l2 are connected to the respective lower end poi'- tions thereof, yet it will be understood that other nieans than that shown may be provided toi' operatively connecting the inner ends of the said rods or bars to the jig pan to hold and inore or less guide the latter and to co-operate with the eccen trics or other actuating ineans upon the shaft 9 to effect gyiatory inotion ot the said pan.
Although l have shown the upper ends of the bars o' as being supported upon and suspended from eccentrics 8, it will be understood that other means may be provided 'for effecting actuation ot the said bars and causing ,the desired and required motion of the jig pan.
lin the operation ot the jig, it will be apparent that as the jig pan raised and lowered by means of the bars G, the inner ends oit the rods or bars 12 nieve through the arcs ot circles, causing a like nievenient of the lower ends ot the bars G.
The means provided by ine for bold and guidingthe lower ends oit the bars (i, or suoli other means as may be sul'istituted therefor, is very durable and, as is obvious. is positive in its lotion and posse, .-1 the further advantage of adjustment to y the angular position of the jig pan as above described.
Although I have employed the terni coal jig in connection with this description, l
desire it to be understood that this terni is intended to comprehend the apparatus not only for the washing and separation of coal from sla-te, but also `tor the washing and separation of ores of various lKinds.
The terni eccentric means7 employed in the claims is intended to cover not only the eecentrics 8 illustrated in the drawing, but also cranks or cranli pins which might be employed to effect the saine motion ot the jig pan as is eiizected by the eccentrics.
l claim:
l. ln a structure, the combination ot a tank. a rotatable shaft supported above said tanli. said shaft being provided with accent-rios, bars supported upon and suspended iroin the said eccentrirfs and eX- tending into the said tank, a jig pan rigidly secured to intermediate portions of said holding and guiding rods having Justa-ble connection at their outer ends to a wall oiA the said tank, the said rods 'extending inwardly and downwardly, and
having connect-ion at their inner ends with portions oit the said bars a dista-nce below the said jig pan and the inner portions of said holding and guiding rods having pivotal connections with the outer portions thereof, substantially as described.
2, ln a j structure, the combination of a tank which is adapted to hold water, a rotatable shaft situated above the said tank and being provided with eccentrics, bars supported upon and suspended from the said eccentrics, said bars extending into the said tanlt and terminating a distance above the bottoni thereof, a ig pan having its opposite sides secured to intermediate portions ot the said holding and guiding rods connected at their inner ends to the lower end portions ot said bars and means adjustably secured to a wall of the said tanlr for pivotaily and adjustably connecting the said rods to said wall, substantially as described.
in testimony that I claim the foregoing as niy invention, l have hereunto signed my naine this 17th. day of February A. D.,
JOHN J. sTniNBAcH.
