Be it known that I, JOHN J. Cnorr, citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county ot' Fulton and State ot' Georgia, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Reed Furniture, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in that class ot furniture made from fiber, reed, or rattan, woven in place to form the article of furniture desired, and more particularly to the settee, couch or chair shapes ot such furniture. and which are provided with cushions to cover the seats of bottom thereot'. in the use ot such cushions it is found in practice that the weight ot the person sitting' thereon ot necessity compresses the cushion, causing the edge to be pressed down and to project beyond the edge oi the `chair or other article of Jfurniture to which the same is applied, thus presenting an unsightly appearance. The object of my i vention is to construct the edge ot the cushion-receiving portion ot the furniture with what may be termed a guard or flange, and which extends above the seat of the chair or other article ot furniture to which my invention may be applied to a distance about the height ot the thickness ot the cushion, or a distance ap proximately equal to the thickness ot such cushion, whereby to confine the cushion in place and to prevent the edge extending,` beyond such seat.

In the drawing, wherein like yparts are designated by the same numerals, 5 designates a reed chair having a seat frame 6 provided adjacent its front edge 7, with a series of apertures 8 in which are mounted stakes 9 about which are wovon the fiber stra-nds 10, said stakes being bent and turned downwardly as illustrated in Fig. t and hereinafter described.

As will be seen from Fig. 3, the ends of the individual stakes 9 are placed in one of the apertures 8 adjacent the front edge 7 oit the bottom traine 6 to extend upwardly therefrom. i

Fiber strands l0 are then woven in and out around the stakes 9 for a distance ot from two to two and one-halt inches above the seat frame 6. The stakesi9 are then bent over the front edge of the seat frame 6 with their' tree ends ll extending downwardly toward the :front legs 12 of the chair 5. rihe weaving` of the fiber strands l() is then continued about the stakes 9 to any depth desired and the free ends l1 of the stakes 9 are then secured to the legs l2 of the chair 5, as shown at it-18, or to a separate section le ot weaving, as illustrated in Fin'. l. f

is will be seen that portion ot the liber which is woven in and about the stakes 9 and which extends above the front edge 7 of the seat frame 6 forms a guard `or flange.
