NUT Loon.
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut Locks; and we do here by declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in looking devices for rail joints and particularly to locks for the nuts of the rail joint bolts.
One object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is adapted to be applied to the bolts before the nuts are applied, and which cooperates with the nuts and with the tread and base of the rail ends to prevent turning of the nuts.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which 1s simple in construction, easily applicable to the bolts of any railway joint, and one which can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
Other objects and advantages w ll be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rail oint showing the invention in applied posit1on.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal central sectlonal view through the locking plates, on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective View of the look ing device removed from the rail and bolts.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing 10 represents a pair of rail ends having the bolts 11 disposed therethrough and on which are engaged the nuts 12. D1sposed longitudinally of the webs of the ra1l ends, and between the tread and base portions thereof is a metal plate 13 having a number of openings 14 for receivlng the threaded ends of the bolts therethrough. One end of the plate 13 is formed with the rolled portions 15, and disposed between these portions is a similar portion 16 of the ad acent end of a metal plate 17, of the same dimen- Specification of Letters Patent. Pate t d A Application filed August 30, 1921.
Serial No. 496,825.
slons as the plate 13, and being disposed to he against the outer face of said plate 13. A pin 18 is disposed through the portions 15 and 16 whereby the plate 17 is hinged to the plate 13. At the other end of the plate 13 there is formed a longitudinally extend- 1ng tongue 19 which, when the plates are properly positioned with respect to the rail ends and the bolts, is bent forwardly and. across the outer face of the adjacent end of the plate 17, to retain said plate against outward movement. At regularly spaced intervals along the plate 17, there are made pairs of diagonal intersecting incisions which re sult in the formation of the triangular tongues 20, which, when bent outwardly, permit the threaded ends of the bolts, with thelr nuts, to extend therethrough. After the bolt ends and nuts are properly positioned between the tongues 20, the outer ends: of the said tongues are bent inwardly and transversely on the outer faces of the nuts and against the side faces thereof, with the result that the nuts will be held against rotation on the bolts, in either direction.
It will be noted that the plates 13and 17 are of the same width, and that this width is equal to the distance between the lower face of the treads of the rail ends and the upper faces of the base flanges thereof, with the result that the plates are confined between such points against movement vertically. The nuts retain the plate 13 against outward or longitudinal movement, and thus retain the plate 17 against movement with respect thereto. The hinged connections at one end of the plates 13 and 17, together with the tongue 19' at the other end, serve to firmly bind the two plates together. Thus is formed an effective lock for the nuts of the railway joint bolts, the
plates 13 and 17 fishplate.
What is claimed is:
A nut lock for a rail joint comprising a pair of elongated plates hinged together at one end, the other end of one of the plates having a tongue arranged to be bent around into embracing engagement with the adjacent end of the other plate, the first plate having bolt receiving openings, and tongues on its upper and lower edge portions at points between the openings and embracing performing the duty of a the upper and lower edge portions of the In testimony whereof, We aflix our signaother plate, the other plate having nut retures, in the presence of two Witnesses.
