To all whom it may concern: .Be it known that I, JUNJI farm, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing in the city and county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Alarm for Strong Boxes, of which the following is a specification. This invention has relation to an improved alarm for money-boxes, grips, satchels, and other articles of similar character, and its objects are to provide means for indicating, by audible signal, such as the ringing of a bell, when the money-box, or similar article, is lifted or displaced from its position, and to provide a signal of this character, which cannot be readily prevented from ringing, except by a key especially for the purpose, or by replacing the money-box or other article in its normal position. 7

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view of the base section of a strong-box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the strong-box constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 5 is an enlarged and detail plan view of the actuating mechanism for ringing the alarm. Fig. 6 is a vertical and sectional view of the alarm-actuating mechansim. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary view showing the releasing means for the alarm.
Referring to the drawings, the box 11 is provided with a base-plate 12 carrying my improved alarm mechanism, and secured to the box, by screws 13, and provided with apertures 14. On the top 15, of the base plate, I have mounted the bell 16, and brackets 17 Tripping levers 18, 19, 20 and 21, are pivotally connected to brackets 17. To the longer arm 22, of each tripping lever, I have fixed a plunger 23, the plungers sliding in apertures 14, and extending therethrough, when the box is lifted from its position. A bracket 24, mounted on the baseplate, has pivotally connected thereto, the rocking lever 25, having a weighted arm 26, extending over the free extremities 27, of tripping levers 18, 19, 20 and 21, and having the opposite end 28 arranged for engaging the bell-hammer 29, when the weighted end 26 is released. Springs 30 bear upon the tripping levers adjacent to the plungers, and, when the box is lifted, actuate the tripping levers, which thereupon force the Specification of Letters Patent. For operating the bell-hammer, I provide an actuating mechanism, consisting of a main-spring 31, having. one end connected to a fixed shaft 32 in casing 33, and the opposite end fixedto shaft 34, having a rectangular end 35,1501 winding with a key (not shown), and having a ratchet wheel 36 has .a spring-actuated pawl 38, in' engagement with ratchet wheel 36. In use, the alarm is set by inserting a key in socket 51, and turning shaft 48 so that pawl 50 releases the escapement wheel. From the foregoing it may be seen that i have provided simple and efiicient apparatus for ringing an alarin'when the containing object is handled, the device being applicable to other than strong-boxes.
It may be further noted that, when the alarm is set for operation, the box cannot be raised or carried Without operating the alarm, for each plunger is spring-actuated to protrude from the bottom of the baseplate, so that all, or any one of them, When extended, will, through its corresponding lever, actuate the rock-lever which releases the bell-hammer. Therefore, all of the plungers must be pressed inward to cause the rock-lever to move to inoperative position. Consequently, the box cannot be tampered with Without ringing the alarm, eX- cept that the operator has a key which Will turn the detent member 50 to operative position.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. The combination with a strong-box base zlate having a plurality of apertures, of a hell on the upper side of the base-plate, a plurality of brackets projecting upwardly from the base-plate, tiltable levers pivot-ally connected to. the brackets and having relatively long and short arms, plungers pivot-- ally connected to the long arms of the tilt able levers and projecting normally through the apertures in the base-plate, springs having their middle part connected to the baseplate and their extremities bearing upon the tilt'able levers adjacent to the plungers, a spring-actuating mechanism mounted on the base-plate and having a key-winding shaft, a bell-hammer operated by the spring actuating mechanism and arranged to strike the bell, a rock-lever bracket mounted on the base-plate, a rock-lever pivotally connected to the rock-lever bracket, a Weighted arm of said rock-lever projecting over the ends of said tiltable levers, the opposite arm of the rock-lever being arranged as a detent for the bell-hammer, a stop lever for the bellhammer, a shaft for the stop-lever adapted to be acti'iated by a key, barrel sockets for the key shafts, and a plurality of blind barrel sockets adjacent to the first-named sockets.
The combination with a strong-box base-plate and an alarm device mounted thereon, oi a spring-actuatedmechanism for operatiin the alarm device, a rock-lever havone arm serving as a detent for the alarm device, a weight on the opposite end of the rock-lever which serves to hold the detent arm in engagement with the alarm device, a plurality of tiltable levers fulcrumed with relatively short arms and long arms, said short arms havin their extremities lying beneath the weighted arm of the rock-lever, springs bearing upon the long arms of the tiltable levers and operative to actuate the tiltahle levers and thereby lift the Weighted end of the rock-lever. and plungers pivotally connected, to the tiltable levers and extending through the base-plate, and serving to force the spring-pressed arms of the tiltable levers to inoperative position when pressed inward by an exterior object.
