AUTOMOBILE HEATER.
Application filed April 26,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SHIRo TsI-nMATsU, a subject of theEmperor of Japan, residing in the city and county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and use ful Automobile Heater, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a heating device for automobiles, and coinprehends an organization of tubular conduits adapted to contain circulated air, previously heated from proximity to the exhaust gases of the explosive motor, and capable of radiating heat within the automobile.
The objects of the invention are to pro vide a compact and efficient device for abstracting heat from the exhaust gases from the motor, and for distributing the abstracted heat within the automobile.
The invention resides in the construction and arrangement of the elements composing the heat distributing device.
Upon the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of the air heating and air circulating elements embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end View of the heating chamber and conduits. Fig. 8 is a side view of the automobile heater applied to and sup-- ported in a motor vehicle.
Referring to the drawings, the apparatus comprises an outer casing 11, and an inner casing 12 concentric with the outer casing, and forming, respectively, the annular chamber 13 and cylindrical chamber 14. The exhaust tube 15, extending from the mullier 16, passes concentrically through the inner chamber 14:. The outer chamber 13, therefore, forms a non-conducting space for retaining the heat within the inner chamber. A pipe conduit 17 has a spiral section 18.
winding around the exhaust tube 15. and
within the chamber 14. This conduit 17 extends upwardly to the radiating sections 19, where the heat is emanated within the auto mobile. From the radiating sections, the air, somewhat cooled, circulates back to the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 29, 1922. 1921. serial No. 464,622.
In use, the expansion of the heated air Within the coil will cause the same to flow upwardly through the radiating coils or sections. It may be noted that the gases of combustion do not pass through the circulating portions of the device. The air, which returns from the radiating sections by gravity, is thus brought adjacent to new gases of combustion, and thereby reheated.
It is to be understood that minor changes in the construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
lVhat is claimed is: I
In an automobile heating system, the combination with the motor exhaust tube and muflller, of a cylindrical casing disposed on the exhaust tube and concentric therewith and having its forward end adjacent to the mutller, a cylindrical wall within the casing and forming outermost and innermost annular intercommunicating chambers concentric with the motor exhaust tube, radiator pipes located at a higher level than the cylindrical casing, a coil of pipe encircling the motor exhaust tube and within the innermost annular chamber, said coil having one end extending from the casing adjacent to the mufiier and the opposite free end in open communication with the inner chamber, a conduit connecting the coil of pipe with the radiatorpipes, and a conduit connecting the radiator pipes and the outermost annular chamber, the said coil of pipe, intercommunicating chambers, conduits and radiator pipes being arranged for a continuous circulating air passage.
