To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM K. MoArnn,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Edgewood Park, in the county of allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coil Supports for Dynamo-Electric Ma chines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to dynamo-electric machines and particularly to supports for the field-magnet coils thereof, and it has for its object to provide acoil support which shallbe simple and inexpensive to manufacture and strong and durable in service and which shall hold the coil firmly in position and requirea minimum amount which to be assembled.
Heretofore, the field-magnet coils of dynamo-electric machines have been held in position by coil supports in which the coilsupporting portions were integral with the base portions. Thesestructures have been found serviceable under ordinary conditions but cannot readily be used where the space is limited, as, for instance, where it is desired to assemble another winding on the samecorc between said core and said first winding.
Accordin to m invention. 1 arovide a coil support inwhich the base and coil-sup aortin --)orti0ns are separate and which may be assembled in a space which is so limited that it would be impossible to use the one-piece type of support.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Fig. l is a fragmentary elevational view of a dynamo-electric machine, embodyin a coil support constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the structure shown in Fig. 1, taken along the lines II-II thereof. Fig. 8 is a detail view of the coil support shown in the other figures.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, a machine frame 1 is shown which carries a plurality of field-magnet polepieces 2, only one of which is shown. The pole-piece 2 preferably comprises a number of punchings which are held together between end members 8. A field-magnet coil 4 surrounds the pole-piece 2, and a compen sating winding 5 is inserted in slots in the end thereof. Connecting leads 6 between the compensating windings of the various of space in' v therefore,
poles extend upwardly between the coils at and the pole-pieces 2. The coil 4 is supported, at one side, by a supporting member 7, comprising a one-piece base member and supporting portion but, on the opposite side of the pole-piece 2, on account of the space between the leads 6 and the coil 4 being very limited, it is impossible to insert a support of the type shown at 7. A twopiece support 8 comprises a base member 8? and asupporting member 9 which is a single piece of metal so bent as to have oppositely extending right angle projections 10 and 11 at its ends. The projection 10 is longer than the projection 11, and engages the coil. The projection 11, fits over the base ,8, and is attached thereto by means of bolts 12, which extend through'the supporting member 9 and thebase member 8 into the end member 3 ofthe coil.
. .lVhen the coil 4 is being assembled, it is first moved so that one side of it engages one set of the leads 6, thus permitting the insertion of a support of the one-piece type, shown at 7, between the opposite side of the coil and the opposite set of leads 6. The coil is then moved into its final. position. This allows very little space for inserting a coil support on the other side of thecoil, so that a one-piece coil support of the type shown at 7 cannot be used since ,it could not be inserted between the coil and thefl-compensating winding leads. Therefore, atwopiece support ,of the type described in my present applicationis used, since it requires very little space in which to be assembled. lVhile l have shown one form of my invention, and described in detail one application of the same, it will be obvious to those skilled. in the art that it is not so limited but is susceptible of various minor changes and modifications without departing from the spirit thereof, and I desire, that only such limitations shall be placed thereupon as are imposed by the prior art or are specifically set forth. in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a dynamo-electric machine the combination with a core member provided with a coil, of a plurality of coil supporting members for said coil, one of said supporting members being formed in two parts and comprises a base portion attached to one side of said core member and a portion disposed intermediate said coil and said core member and adapted to en gage said coil. at one end and to be fastened to said base portion at the other end,

In a dynamo-electric machine the combination with a core member provided with a coil of a supporting member for said coil comprising a base portion attached to said core member and a portion having; a right-angle projection at each end thereof, one of said projections beingrelatii 'ely long; and adapted to hold said coil in position and the other being; relatively short and extending in the opposite direction "from said long projection to it over, and be fastened to, said base portion.
5. In a dynamo-electric machine the com bination with a core member provided with a coil, of supporting member for said coil comprising a base portion attached to said core member and a portion having a rightangle projection at each end, one being rel atively long adapted to hold said coil in position and the other being relatively short to 'tacilitate assembling and extending in the opposite direction from said long projection to fit over. and be bolted to, said base portion.
6. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a core men'iber provided with a coil, of: a supportingmember for said coil comprisin a base portion bolted to said core member and a portion so bent as to have a right-angle projection at each end. thereof, one of said projections being; relatively lon and adapted to hold said coil in position and the other being relatively short to facilitate assembling; and extending in the opposite dircction trom said long projection to [it over said base portion, andv bolts Fastening: said supporting portion to said base and said base to said core member.
7. in a dynamo-electric machine. the ombination of a core member provided with a coil and a plurality of supporting members for said coil, one of said sup iiorting i'nembers being formed. in two parts and comn'isinr; a coil-engaging; portion and a base portion therefor adapted to be inserted between said core and said coil and connected together and to said core and coil members subsequently to the positioning oi said coil about said core.
8. In a dynamo-electric machine. the combination of a core member having a coil. and a plurality o! coil supporting members one oi? which is formed. in two parts and comprises a coil-engaging portion and a coreengagzinp; base portion adapted to be in serted between said core and said coil and operatively connected together and to said core and oil i'uembers subsequently to positiouinp said coil about said core.
