To all whom'it may concern:
Be'it known that I Emmi-1n citizen of the United States, and a resident of-Wilkinsbur in.th'e county of Allcgl1eny and State of 1 ennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in'FiehLCoil Supports, of which the following is a specifi'cation. I l j .My invention relates to dynamtrelectric machines and it has special reference to the field coil structures of machines of the comptumtbwound type;
()ne object of my invention isto provide a structure -of the above-indicatml class which shall be simple and durable in com struction and be readily assembled and dismantlcd, and one that s all be so constructed as to provide for adequate entilation 11nd liberal radiation.
Another obj ect of my invention is to provide means for rigidly supporting the series coils of a. compound wound dynamo-electric machine in position in such manner as to be entirely independent of the shunt coils.
In my oo-peuding application, Serial No. 598,519, filed December 21, 1910, byme and assigned to the. \Vestinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company, is disclosed a dynamo-ehsctrio machine of the compoundwound type embodying a plurality of main polar pro ections each of which is provided with a shunt field coil and a series field coil that. are concentrically disposed with respect to the polar projection, the series field coil being taped or bound to the shunt field coil by suitable means to form a unitary struc-- tine. \Vith such a structure, if the shunt field coil becomes defective, by reason of undue heating. it isuecessury to remove the associatcd shunt and series coils and to disconneat and separate the one from the other.
According to my present invention, I propose. to employ shunt and series coils which are. disposed in substantially the same relation as that just referred to, and to support the series coil rigidly in position from the polar projection by suitable means in such manner that it shall be entirely independent of the shunt coil. Thus, the series coil may be readily and quickly removed for repairs or for other pu oses without disturbing the shunt coil an the shunt coil may then he remm'cd for the some purposes.

Referring to the drawing, the structure shown comprises a field magnet frame I having main polar projections 2 and iuterpolar projections 3, a shunt field coil 4 and a series field coil lidisposcd upon the main polar projection 2 and commutating field coil 6.

' he field magnet frame 1 and the polar I projections 3 and 3 may be of any suitable 7 form and dimensions, the polar projections .2 and 3 being detachabl y secured to the field magnet frame 1 by any suitable means. The, main polar projection 2 is provided with projecting pole tips 7 and with a closed cir-' cuit winding or damper 8 which is embedded in the face/of said member 2. However, these. specific structures are not essential to my present invention, and may, therefore, be omitted or replaced by other similar devices,
as desired.
The shunt field coils 4 are of like construction and each comprises a plurality of flat, thin coils 8 which are assembled side-bysidc and are spaced and insulated the one from the other by spacing members 9. The. several flat'coils 8 are bound together to form a unitary structure by means of bands 10 of insulating material,- said.bands being located at frequent intervals around the coil, thereby permitting ample ventilation and radiation of heat. Although I consider shunt coils, constructed substantially as set forth, as preferable, for certain sizes and classes of machines, I do not wish to be restricted in this respect, as the specific structural details of these/(coils may be varied widely within the scope of my invention.
Each of the shunt coils 4 is placed upon one of the polar projections 2, and its inner end rests against the pole tips 7, while its outer end is spaced from the inner portion V coil 5 is; materially shorter than the shunt coil 4 and is disposed adjacent to the field magnet frame 1, eing rigidly held in position in a manner to be hereinafter described, so that ample space for ventilation is proiiided between the series and shunt coils.
In order to mount the series coils 5 in tlon, each of the main polar projections 2 is provided with a plurality of supporting mbers or brackets 14 which are severally a polled adjacent to the opposite sides of the}. ph'la'r pro ection '2 by means of one or more bolts 15, or similar devices.
Each of the su porting members or brackets 14 is proVid ed with inwardly pro jectin end portions 14 which have lugs 16 provided with open ended slots' 17. The lugs 16 are in a plane substantially perpendicular to the axis of the polar projection 2 with which the bracket 14 is associated, and
the slots 17 are adapted to receive an insu-.
lated-bolt .18 which projects through open ings in the several convolutions of the strap conductor 12 comprising the series coil 5, whereby said series coil is rigidly mounted in position independently of the shunt'coil 4.
The commutating field coils 6 aresubstantially like the series field coils 5 in construction, and are mounted in position upon the the commutatin field coilsand the supportinterpqlar projections 3' in a slmilar manner by iiieansof a plurality of su porting members or brackets 18 and insu ated bolts 19. No detailed description of the structure of means there or will be 'given on account their similarity to the parts already shown and described in connection with the series coils 5.
Although I have set forth a dynamo-electric machine of the compound-wound con- 'and a plurality of series field coils severally surrounding said shunt field coils, of means attached to each of said polar projections for' rigidly supporting the series field coils in position independently of said shunt field coils, whereby the said series coils are independently removable with rcspect to the said shunt coils.
2. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a field-magnet frame having a plurality of radial olar projections, shunt field coils severally sisposed upon Sflld' projections, series field coils surrounding said shunt "field coils in concentric relation therewith, and meanssupporting said shunt coils, of a plurality of supportm membcrs removably secured to each po ar projection, and means associated with said members for clamping said series coils in position, whcreby the said series coils are independently removable.
