vThis invention relates to an improvement in permutation locks, and more specifically to locks for electric switches. l'
The .lockparts shown are generally similar to those shown in my co-pending application, Serial No. 301,319, filed June 2, 1919, the patent to O. P, Barnes, No. 1,316,934-, of September 23, 1919, and the application of R. R. Barnes, Serial No. 361,928, filed Feb. 28, 1920. l
The object of my inventionis to provide a simple and eiiicient locking device in connection with permutation locks which will permit the permutation mechanism to be vbe best understood by reference to the accommoved a predetermined distance before the iock is released, together with a vlock so arranged that when the loch is moved from its unlocked to its locked position, it will move the permutation mechanism to Zero, or what is generally termed its fullyloclred position.
In this case have shown the lock in connection with a .well knownv snap switch, and which'isthrown from oneeXtreme to the other by a spring actuated toggle, the parts being so arranged to hold theswitch in its extreme positions by the action ofthe spring. lThe toggle is actuated by an oscillating shaft which is locked against movement when ythe switch is open, and which lock is released by the permutation mechanism, when said mechanism lhasbeen moved a predetermined ydistance to permit the switch to be closed. f y
They lock parts are arranged to shift the ,permutation mechanism tozero or their fully locked position when the switch is opened, andfat the saine time lock the switch against movement toits closed position.
kThe precise nature of my invention will panying drawings, which willy now be desc11'ibe'd,-it being premised, however, that various changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement ofthe parts, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
f Referring to the accompanying drawings,
the reference character 1() designates a base having an upwardly extendingv hollow spindle 11. 12 is a combination wheel or lock releasing member mounted on the spindle 11, and which. fis arranged to be moved fourpoints in one direction by cams 13 on push buttons 151., through the medium of four pins 15 in the combination wheel 12.
These pins 15 are placed in a predeter- -mined position on the combination wheel 12 to advance-the combination wheel four points step-by-step, from zero to its unlocking position when kthe buttons 14, (which I have ldesignated 1-8) are operated in a prearranged order.-
The combination wheel 12 is held inits different positions by a spring pawl 16 which engages recesses in the combination wheel 12. Mounted to oscillate on the combination wheel 12 between the upper face thereof and a vflanged collar 17 secured to the combination wheel by screws 18, is a trip wheel 19, for `returning the combination wheel stepby-step to zero through the medium of triction clutch members 19, when the buttons 14, are actuated out ot order.
The trip wheel 19 is oscillated by radial projections 2O on the buttonsk14, which enter helical grooves in the trip wheel, there being eight suon grooves shown, one for each projection 20 on the eight buttons 14. ln order to hold the trip wheel 19 in a fixed position with relation to the buttons 14, I provide a spring actuated lever 21 which oscillates on the hollow spindle 11.
22 is a spring connected to the lever 21 and a spring holder 23 secured as hereinafter described. i
' The buttons 14 are normally held in their elevated positions by means of springs-241L which are seated in recesses in the push buttons 14 and which engage the base 10.
The ybuttons 14 are adapted to reciprocate in guides in a shell 24, which is secured to a shell 25 by screws 26, the base 10 being clamped in position between the shells.
The spring holder is clamped in position on one ot the lugs for the securing screws 26 `on the shell 24v by the screw passing through said lug.
27 is a cover tor the shell 24 which is locked in position by a spring bolt 28, see Figure 11.
Mounted within the shell 25 is a snap switch having a switch blade 29 which is arranged to close the circuit affross spring contacts 30 and 31 secured to block or base oi insulating material secured to the bottom o1 the shell 25. i
The switch blade 29 is connected toa toggle lever 33 pivoted on a trame 34 connected to the loch 32, and which toggle lever 33 is actuated by a compression spring on a connecting rod connected to a crank 36. The crank 36 is pivoted in the 'frame `234 and is connected to a shaft 37 mounted in the hollow spindle 11, and which shatt extends trom the shell 25 to the outsidel oitl the cover Secured to the squared upper end oit the shailt 37 by means oi' a screw is a turn button 38 tor actuating the switch.
The lower end ot the shaft 37 is also squared, and connected thereto by a screw, is a lever 39 which extends into the shell 24 through an opening through a hollow boss on the lower end oi' the hollow spindle 11. The lower end of the hub ot lever 39 is slotted to receive a flat portion on the crank 36,
there being insulating materialbetween the crank and the hub of lever 39, to prevent grounding of the circuit controlled by the j switch.
Pivotallymconnected to the outer end of Ylever 39 is-a latch or lock lever 40, which is 'normally held' in its working position by a ure 10.
leat spring connected to the latch lever, and which bears against the hollow boss on the lower end ot spindle 11. A
@ne end ot the latch ylever 40 is recessed to engage a projection 41 on the base 10, t-o loclr the switch in its open position, while the other end of the latch lever is arranged to be engaged by a cam 42 on the combination wheel 12 to tree the latch lever from the projection 41 when the combination wheel has been advancedtour points from zero; T he last mentioned end ot latch lever 4() also arranged to engage a tooth 43 on the combination wheel 12 to return the permutation mechanism to Zero when the switch is opened.
The permutation mechanism in Figures 1 to is at Zero, and the switch in said figures as well as Figure 9 is in its open position. When it is desired to close the switchv the permutation mechanism must be moved 'tour steps to bring the mechanism trom the position shown in Figure 5 to that shown in .Figure 7, which is accomplished in this lock by pushing buttons 7 5, 3-4 in sequence. lllhen buttons 7, 5, i5 are pushed the permutation mechanism will be shifted from the position shown in Figure 5 to that shown in Figure 6, and when button 4 is pushed, the permutation mechanism will be shifted to the position shown in Figure 7. The action oi" cam 42 on the latch lever 40' will release the latch lever from projection 41 and permit the shattv37 to be rotated by means ot the tiufn-button approximately 90o, from the position shown in Figures 5, 6 and 7 to that shown in Figure S. This shifting ot the shaft will throw the switch from the position shown in Figure 9to that shown in F ig- Vvlhen the switch is tl'n'ownin the reverse direction to open the circuit, the shaft 37 is rotated clockwise 'from the position shown in Figure 8 to that shown in Figures 5, 6 and 7, and during the clockwise movement oit this sha'tt the end. ot the latch lever 40 will engage the tooth 43, and shiit the permutation mechanism to yZero. tust before the permutation mechanism is shifted to zero, the end ot the latch lever 40 will engage the projection 41, which will release the front end ot kthe latch lever from the tooth 43, and permit the latch lever to pass beyond said tooth asuilicient distance to permit the notched end ot the latch lever to engage the projection 41 to loclr the switch against movement, as clearly shown in Fig- 'ure 5 l lt the 7 and 5 buttons are pushedfin sequence, and any ot theother buttons with the exception ot button l are then pushed, the permutation mechanism will be returned to Zero by the trip wheel 19, through the medium of the spring-pressed friction clutch members 19:l which is arranged yto actuate the combination wheels 12 counter clockwise, but will permit the trip wheel i9 to move freely in a clockwise direction.
The advantages of my invention result from the provision of the lock for a switch actuating shaft or similar member, which is arranged to be released by permutation mechanism when the permutation mechanism is moved a predetermined distance, and which permutation mechanism is adapte-d to be oscillated within a pre-arranged limit without affecting the locking mechanism. Another advantage of my invention results from the provision of locking mechanism whichr is arranged to return the premutation mechanism to zero when the locking mechanism is shifted from its unlocked position to its locked position.
