"SEAN-GUIDING FOOT.
Specification of letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 29515;22.
:Application filed June 14, 1920. Serial No. 388.775.
iof't'he city of Chicago, in the county of Cool;
and State-'of lllinois, have invented certain new and'usefuli' Improvements in a Seam- Guiding :Presser Foot; and I do hereby de- -s-clare that the following is'a full, clear, and
exact description of the same, reference and to the numerals of reference marked being hadto the accompanying drawings.
thereon,-which form a part of this specifica tlOIl.
I nection with asewing machine.
1 My invention irelates'moreparticularly to a presser foot designed to be used in con- In making garters and other articles it is often desirable that the flaps of a seam be flattened and stitched down on each sideof the seam, a process called felling the seam, and a special presser foot is necessary to control the work during the operation thereof.
The presser feet heretofore in use have not guided the work accurately and unless operated by experts, crooked and irregular work resulted. On account of this difficulty, it has been necessary to allow wider seam flaps than would be needed if a straight felled seam could be assured.
It is therefore an object of my invention to construct an easily operated device or presser foot which will guide the flaps accurately, flatten them out and press them downwardly during the operation of the sewing machine in felling the seam and which allows complete observation of the work or operation.
It is further an object of my invention to accurately guide the flaps of the seams when felling. assuring straight seams and uniform width and permitting a substantial saving of material.
It is also an object of my invention to embody the same in a simple and. novel structure possessing many advantages as will be more specifically hereinafter pointed out.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the drawings and specification.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sewing machine embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of my presser foot in detached form.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of my presser foot in operative relation with a seam.
' Figure 4 is a side view'of the parts shown in Figure 3. k i I Figure 5 is a sectional detail on the line 5+5 of Figure 2.
As shown on the drawings:
My improved presser foot comprises preferably an integral member 1 having a vertical securing; portion 2 and a horizontal flap or seam controllingportion or plate 3. Theportion 3 hastwo elongated slots 4, through which the needles are adapted to pass. and. a flap guideway 5 through which the seam and flaps pass in their advancing movements toward the needles. Thenfuideway '5 communicates with two apertures 6 and 7; the metal between these apertures projects centrally of the guideway 5 in the form of a nose 8 adapted to pass between the flaps 9 and 10, asshown in Figure 3, directly above the seam, to direct the flaps outwardly. The upper inner corners 11 of the guideway 5 are bevelled as shown in Figure 3 to allow the flaps to be more readilv directed outwardly and downwardly. The apertures 6 and 7 are undercut or beveled on their lower rear and outer parts, as shown in Figure 2 at 6 and. 7 to facilitate the passage of the flaps under the shoe. These apertures 6 and 7 should be sufficiently large and so constructed as to allow the flaps substantially a free passage under the presser foot, and they should be as close to the needle slots as practical.
The operation is as follows:
In practice the presser foot 1 is attached to a sewing; machine by means of the vertical portion 2 so that the needles thereof will pass through the slots 4:. A piece of ma terial having a seam which it is desired to fell is arranged with the flaps of the seam in a vertical plane passing through the guideway 5 and the nose 8. As the material is advanced. the flaps enter the guideway 5 and are guided thereby so that the seam is constrained to travel in the center line of the guideway and nose 8 the guideway and nose being always in full view so that the operation can be readily watched. Consequently as the nose 8 separates and spreads the flaps. it will always be in the line of the seam. As the flaps are spread and pass under the presser foot, they are pressed range without departing from the princi-' ples of this invention, and I therefore do no purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention: 7 1. A seam guiding presser foot comprising a member having needle slots, a guide way, the walls of which are bevelled at their upper inner ends, apertures having a portion of their lower walls bevelled communieating with said guideway and a flap spreading nose in the center line of the guideway.
2. Ina presser foot'for telling, a fiat plate having an entrance slot in the middle of the forward end and also having two orifices one on each side of the central line of said slot into which said slot opens, the surfaces of the slot adjacent the entrance to said orifices divergingupward and also diverging backward, a nose located in line with said slot, the sides of said nose diverging rearwardly and at their rear ends also diverging upwardly and merging with the rear walls of said orifices, the walls of said orifices where the sides of the nose merge with them being inclined upward and forward. 3. A seam felling presser foot comprising a horizontal plate member having an eX- posed guideway in the front endthereof extending from the top to the bottom thereof, a pair of beveled apertures extending through said plate member and communicating with said guideway, and a flapspreading nose projecting between said apertures and terminating in the rear of said guideway and said plate having needle perforations in the rear of said orifices. Y In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. Y
