application meramente: an, maserati ma. aman. aeaewea @meer a, mao. saranno; croata Be it k'nown that l1, EDMUND C. MORGAN,
.a citizen of the United States, residing at New `iork, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Mmmg and Loading Machine, of which the followvin is a specification.
y invention relates to improvements in mining machlnes and has more partlcular reference to an improved machine for completely severing and removing blocks of coal from the wall ofa mine. @ne of the objects of my invention is to provide a machine of this character which will be simple, durable and' reliable in construction and edective and elcient in operation. Other objects of my invention will appear hereinafter.

It will be obvious to one skilled in the art,
`after having obtained an` understanding of my invention :from the disclosures herein made, that my invention'is capable of modication without departing from the scope and spirito the invention, and 1 desi-re it to .1914, although the present machine also contains other features not embodied in said earlier case.
rlhe operating parts of the machine shown in the drawings are supported by or mounted upon a'main frame A. which in general is of open-work construction and rectangular in form. rThis frame smade up wherever possible of structural steel in order to secure comparative lightness in weight, ease of construction, and strength. I has two lower side reaches or members 1 and a cross member 2 at its forward and at its rear end.
This rectangular structure forms, in a sense, a base for the frame which may be Asupported by blocks 3 when the machine is 1n operating position. Rising Afrom each corner of this horizontal, rectangular base is an upright 4 and these four uprights support at their upper end a rectangular openwork structure similar to the base structure and comprising the upper side reaches or members 5 and the transverse members 6.
ongl ludinall section on of the kforward uprights and to the upper and lower vhorizontal reaches 1 and 5. The
lower horizontal reaches may, if desired, bel
provided with horns 9 at their ends to enable the machine to be more conveniently shifted from position to position. A pair of adjustablejacks B are hinged to lugs on the forward upper cross member 6. Between the two sides of the frame is an inclined runway or chute C alon which the sections of coal or other materia are moved to discharge them from the machine. This chute or runway extends from the lower forward portion of the frame on' an incline to the upper rear portion of the machine. It is preferably formed of a large flat plate 10 having upstanding side flanges or rails 1l this being in the form of a large flat plate so as to prevent coal dust or other material from dropping into the driving and other operating parts below. This plate, as shown more clearly in Figs. 2, 3, and 4 is strengthened and supported. by a plurality o-f longitudinal angle beams 12 lwhich restupOn and are secured to the upper rear cross member 6 and the lower forward cross member 2 of the frame. Immediately beneath the forward upper cross ing 14 formed in the upper forward corner of the frame and at its other end in a bracket 14a secured to the crossbeam 6. This shaft supports and constitutes a pivot for a supplemental Swingin frame D which, as shown more clearly in lgs. 2 and 3, comprises'a long sleeve 15 journaled on the shaft 13 and the outstanding arms 17 and 18. The outer arm 18. and the intermediate arm 17 are joinedby a cross member 19 near the inner ends of said arm for the purpose of strength. At theouter ends of the two arms 17 is a long journal sleeve or bearing 20 in which a" shaft 21 is mounted. This shaft also has a journal in the .outer end of the arm This supplemental frame is swingable 1n a ver- ,tical plane and"is adapted to be adjusted in fastened to the inside of .said upright. Thissleeve has a smooth bore in which operates a screw 25, the upper end of the screw being pivotallyconnected at 26 to the arm 18 submamie stantiall midway between the ends of said arm. T e sleeve 22 is divided into two parts connected to ether and rigidly held by the bridge 27. he space between the two parts of this sleeve accommodates a nut 28 which operates on the screw 25 to shift the screw longitudinally of the sleeve. Thus by rotat- ,ing the nut' the supplemental frame may be ralsed or lowered about its pivot shaft 13 and reta-ined in any desired position. The divided sleeve 22 rovides an arran ement whereby the adjusting nut 28 will be eld in relative position in either direction of movement of the screw 25. The shaft 21 supports the cutting mechanism so that it may be swung upwardly in a vertical plane. The cutting mechanism is in the forni of a large open or looped rectangular frame, as shown more clearly in Figs. 2, 5, and 6. This rectangular frame is formed by a substantially U-shaped portion 30, the ends of which are bridged by and fastened lto a cross bar or member 31. The outer corners of the U-shaped member 3() vare rounded oif to 'the cutting mechanism frame has two outstanding members 32 extending substantially in the same plane as the frame and alongside of the arms 17 of the swinging frame D. The faces of these upstanding members 32, 'as shown in Figs. 2 and 7, have outstanding longitudinal undercut 0r dovetailed ribs 33 which fit correspondingly shaped slots in members 34. The nembers 34 extend transversely to the'shaft 21 and are formed with bearings 35 to lit the shaft 21. These members 34, as shown clearly in Fig. 7, are firmly fastened to the shaft 21 by means of splines or keys 36 so that the rotation of the shaft 21 will rotate the membersl 34. By this construction, the entire cutting and the purpose of the dove-tailed rib 33 and slot connection of the members 32 with the` members 34 is to provide an adjustment for 21. eter of the crescent or arc shaped cut which the cutting mechanism makes. In other words, by adjusting the cutting mechanism relatively to the shaft 21, the radius of the arc which the cutting mechanism makes during the cutting operation may be varied as desired to suit the particular requirements and conditions of the mine. in which the machine is operating. In order to secure the cutting mechanism in any position to which it is adjusted, portions of the ribs 33 of members 32 are cut laway to provide room for bolt heads 37. The bolts 38 having these heads 37, extend through the members 32 where they carry clamping nuts 39 on their ends.
The heads 37 of the bolts are adapted to j itv ge the overhanging @anges of the slots in the members 34 and when the nuts 39 are tightened, the members 34 are clamped tightly a ainst the members 32, thus 'securely vholdingt ecutting mechanism in its adjusted position.v f coursein adjusting the cutting mechanism to any particular size of cut Within the range of the machine, the adjustment is preferably obtained by shifting the members 32 relatively to the members 34 so that the cutting mechanism will preferably maintain a constant. door line for themine. lln other words, to ad'ust the cutting mech-l anism, it is preferabletoplacethe cuttin mechanism, as shown in Fig.l l in 'suoi' position that it will start the cutting of the will now be described. Adjacent the arm l 18 of the supplemental frame D, the shaft 21 to be connected with or disconnected 'ner as for instance by means of theayoke 52.
carries a segmental drum or sheave 40. This sheave is keyed to shaft 21 to rotate it and hence the cutting mechanism. A rope, cable, or belt 41 is attached at oneend 42 to the sheave and in the lowermost position of the cutting mechanism is given a partial turn around the periphery of the sheave. This ropeextends downwardly toward the bottom of the frame where it passes beneath an idler sheave 43 which is supported by an upstand' ing lug or plate 44 secured to the lower sidev reach of the frame. The rope then passes rearwardly along the sidereach of the frame where it is Wound upon a large drum 45. This drum is mounted upon a shaft 46. Thel shaft 46 also carries a large spur gear 47 which isenclosed for protection in a suitable casing 48. The spur gear 47 .is adapted to be driven by a pinion 49 loosely mounted upon a shaft 50. The pinion 49 is ada ted rom the shaft 50 by means ofa clutch member 51 which may be operated in any suitable man- The yoke .52 is carried by a rod 53 having at its outer end a handle 54 by which the rod may be rotated. The pinion 49 isalso enclosed within the casing 48. lThe shaft 50 also carries a worm wheel 54 which 'is driven by a Worm 55 on an inclined shaft 56.- The 'shaft 56 inturn is driven by a worm wheel 57 mounted thereon and a worm 58 which as carried on the shaft 59 of a suitable driving motor 60. .These last mentioned parts are enclosed in the casing 61 for protection againstv damage or the entrance of grit. Thus it is seenthat the motor, throughout the medium of the mechanism just described,'
edge of the U-s apedmember 30 of the cuttates the cutting mechanism inthe 'roper direction and at the proper speed. t will 'be noted that e adjusting` device for the supplemental frame D is positioned substan- '7e tially in the same vertical plane as the segmental sheave 40 on the shaft 21. lt is thus positioned so that it acts as a lbrace for the supplemental frame to directly take the strains imposed on said frame by reason of the powerful pulling effort exerted by'the cable. 41 to rotate the cutting mechanism.
rllhe cutting chain E is in the form of a continuous loo which travels around the ting mechanism frame. This chain com prises a plurality of cutting links 65 and intermediate or connecting links 66. The cutting links are slotted at their ends to laccommodate the end portions of the intermediate links. vThe links of the chain are connected 'by .bolts 67 each cutting link carrying two bolts which pass through the ends ofthe intermediate links at the ends of said cutting links. These bolts are made removable and they are adapted to be held in position by cross or locking pins 68, (see Figs. 12 to 15). This permits the links of the chain to be removed or replaced whenever desired. At one side each cutting link has an outstanding or lateral lug 69. These lugs andthe links on which they are formed, are provided with long channels or sockets 70 for the reception of the Shanks v71 of cutting bits 72. These cuttin bits project beyond 10@ the lugs and are pointe in the direction in which the chain travels'so as to cut into the material. The sockets 70 are placed at an angle with respect to the plane of the chain and the several bits are staggered with rela- 105 l tion to each other, in other words, alternate sockets are angled in opposite directions.
`or ledge 474 upon which the chain travels and by which it is supported. The chain is locked against displacement with respect to the frame by means of small plates 75 which are riveted to lugs 76 formed on the side of 120 thej cuttingv links opposite to that from which the bits project. These plates engage the flanges 77 of plates 78` fastened in any suitable manner to the portion 30 of the cutting mechanism frame. The plates 78 and 125 the flanges 74 ,form undercut channels or slots around the edge of the portion 30 of the frame, and the plates 75 travel inA these slotsA and hold the cutting chain in position. Tt will be understood that sullicie'nt clearance 118@ should be provided for the free travel of the plates 75 throughout their entire range of movement. For this purpose the grooves formed by the flange 77 should be in proper alinement entirely around the stirrup frame, and the sprocket wheel 80, shown in Figs. 8 and 11, should be so located as to minimize friction while pulling the chain out of the groove. The sprocket wheel 80 should also be so located as to provide sufficient clearance for free movement of the chain and the extension plates 75 thereon. At one corner of the cutting mechanism frame (see Fig. 5) the cross member 31 of said frame has an arc-shaped rib 79 to facilitate the operation of the chain at this corner. At the opposite corner the chain travels around a sprocket 80 by which it is driven, Between the sprocket and the arc-shaped member 79 the chain is allowed considerable slack which is intended to permit the tautness of the chain to be adjusted as desired. The sprocket 80 which drives the chain, is mounted on and keyed to the long hub of a beveled gear 82 which isl loosely mounted by a suitable bearing on a stationary shaft 81. The beveled gear 82 meshes with and is driven by a corresponding beveled gear 83 loosely mounted by a suitable bearing on a short stationary shaft 84. rlhe gear 83 has an extended hub on which iskeyed a spur gear v85. This gear meshes with and is driven by a similar gear 86 on a shaft 87 which is parallel with the shaft 84. The shaft 87 carries at its louter end a beveled gear 88 which is driven by a beveled pinion 89 mounted on'the upper end of the long shaft 90. One of the outstanding members 32 on the cutting mechanism frame, is arranged so as to form an enclosure or casing 32a for the several gears and shafts just described. This casing contains bearings, of course, for the shafts and its purpose is to prevent coal dust or other grit vfrom damaging the various kdriving gears. rThe casing 32a as shown more clearly in Figs. 9 and 11, is divided in the plane of the axes of the two shafts 84 and 87 so as to permit the assembling and disassembling of the parts whenever desired. One portion 32b of this enclosure or casing, is in the form of a cap which is removably fastened to theportion of the casing 32a by means of the bolts 32c (Figs. 7 and 11). One of the bolts 38 which assists in clamping the member 32 with the vmember 34, is lengthened and eX tends through the cap 32", otherwise it is similar to the remaining bolts 38. IBy reference to Fig. 6, it will be observed that an extension portion 32d of la casing 32a forms a bearing for another casing 92 which encloses the beveled gears 88 and 89 and also a ortion of the shaft 90. The shaft 90, throng the various other shafts and gears just described, operatesto drive the cutting mamie chain around its frame. 1t will be noted, however, that although the shaft 87 is olfset with respect to the shaft 21, which constitutes the center of rotation of the cutting mechanism, the ability of the casing4 92 to rotate on the bearing 32c1 permits the shaft 90 to accommodate itself to the rotary movement of the cutting mechanism. In other words, the driving connection between the shaft 90 and the shaft 87 is adaptable to the relative positions assumed by the shaft and cutting mechanism during the operation of the machine, and the shaft 90 will thus always effectively transmit power to the cutting mechanism irrespective of its relative position. The casing 92 may be split longitudinally along the line 93 to permit its assembling and disassembling as desired. The motor shaft 59 extends from the motor '60 and carries a beveled gear 94 which drives another beveled gear 95.` The gear 95 is mounted on the shaft 90. It has a long sleeve 96 which is journaled in the bearing 97 and which is splined to the shaft 90 in such a manner that it will drive the shaft but will permit the' shaft 90 to slide longitudinally thereof. rlhis maintains a driving connection between the motor shaft and the shaft 90 regardless of the movement of the shaft necessary to accommodate itself 'to the rotation of the cutting mechanism. The bearing 97 is part of a casing which encloses the gears 942 and 95. rlhis vrcasing is journaled at 98 on a bearing formed on the motor frame and surrounding the motor shaft so tlat it will permit the operation of the shaft Attached to the U-shaped ymember l30 of the cutting mechanism frame, is a plurality of ropes or cables 100 which are substantially equally-spaced apart and parallel, as shown more clearly in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. 'llhese ropes may be fastened in any suitable way to the cutting mechanism frame, as by means of the connections 101. These ropes or cables extend from the cutting mechanism frame up the inclined chute or runway C and pass around sheaves 102 at the extreme upper rear end of the runway C. These sheaves are suitably mounted on a transverse shaft 103 which is journalled in'depending lugs 10ft` on the upper end of the runway. From these'sheaves the cables 100 extend forwardly where they are wound upon a plurality of individual drums 105 mounted on the transverse shaft 106 disposed beneath the nchute or runway C., These drums are all fastened on the shaft or keyed tothe shaft to rotate inunison. The shaft is journalled in bearings 106a outstanding from the motor 60. 'Bhe shaft also carries a worm wheel 107 which meshes with a worm 108. The worm 108 is loose on the shaft 56 which, as before explained, is driven from the motor. It is adapted to be conmamie The rock shaft 111 carries at its outer end, an operating member 112 in a convenient position for the operator. The worm wheel 107 and the worm 108 areenclosed in a suitlable casing 113 which is supported by a cross member'114 on the frame of the machine.
One of the ropes orcables 100 passes over an idler sheave ,114l which vraises this rope clear of the feeding mechanisms previously described. Tt 'will thus be seen that when the cutting mechanismv is rotated and cuts a crescent or arc-shaped kerf in the wall of the mi-ne, it ynecessarily pulls the ropes or cables 100 into the kerf behind itself, so that these ropes, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3, embrace the section of coal cut by the cutting mechanism. AThe section of coal will drop upon these belts or ropes 100 and it may drop as a whole section or it may break into several parts, depending, of course, upon the nature and condition of the coal, but in any event, the throwing of the clutch 109 will connect the drums into operating relation to the shaft 56 and tension will be applied to the conveyor ropes 100 to pull the section or pieces of coal up the inclined runway and discharge them from the rear end of the machine. Ur the section of coal may be intentionally broken during or at the finish of the cuttingioperation if desired, by applyingl tension tothe ropes at the same time that the cutting mechanism is rotating upwardly. This tension may be applied to the ropes 100 by any suitable means, such as a brake, which T have shown more clearly in Figs. 1 and 4. This brake comprises a drum 115 on the shaft 106 and a band 116 embracing' said drum. The band may be tightened against lthe drum by means of an operating foot lever 117 which is mounted upon a lug upstanding from the cross member 114 of the frame. Since thel ropes embrace the section, the tension applied'to the ropes will act upon the section of coal to break it.. The ropes 100 are thus employed not only to break and remove the section of coal, but also to restore the cutting mechanism to its initial position. When tension is a plied to the ropes 100 by the throwing in o the clutch 109, the clutch member 51 will of course be thrown so as to disconnect the power drum 45 from the driving power, as previously explained. llt is desirable that the cutting mechanism be capable'of being returned or restored. t0 its.
initial position at a comparatively greater rate ,of speed than that of itslcutting operation, and for this reason T malte the worm 108 and the worm wheel 10/7 of such propor-y tions that the proper speed ratio may be obtained. This worm. and gear 108 and 107, are also arranged so that when the cutting drivey the worm 108, but this worm will be disconnected from the shaft 56 by the clutch mechanism is cutting the kerf and hence pullmg upon the ropes 100, the gear 107 will. l
109 and will therefore run idly. lit is thus seen that as'each section of coal is cut and removed from its original position by the conveyor ropes 100,l it is carried up the incllned runway by said ropes, the succeeding sections assisting in pushing up the incline those which preceded them. Tn orderl to ayoid any possibility of the sections slipplng back down the incline, while the cutting -mechanism starts forward .for another cut, the bottom of the chute may be provided' withra plurality of clutching devices. These may be 1n the nature of smalldogs 120 pro- ]ectlng through sultable openings in the plate 10 of the runway. These may be pivoted at 121 beneath the plate 10 and yield-` ing'ly held in their projected position by a' sprlng 122. They are pointed in such direction that they will yield as the sections pass up the. inclined runway, but will resist the ldownward movement ofthe blocks or sections. v v
If desired, an additional conveyor may be provided in the runway C to carry the sections up the incline and discharge them from the rear end thereof. Tn Figs. 18 and 19 loo T show a modified construction in which a conveyor is employed. This conve or may be in the form of aplurality (pre erably 2 or more) of continuous chains 130 having Hights 131 thereon at intervals. These chains travel around sprockets 132 at the upperend.
of the runway. Tn this case, the sprockets may be mounted upon thetransverse shaft 103 and positioned between the ropes 100. At the lower end of the runway .thel chains travel around sprockets 133 which are mounted upon a transverse shaft 134. @ne of the chains may pass over an idler 135 beneath the runway bottom 10 in order to clear the feed mechanism. The end of the shaft 56 maybe provided with a beveled gear 136 which meshes with and drives a bevel/ed gear 137 on a transverse shaft 138 journaled in suitable bearings in the rear uprights of the frame. This shaft also carries sprockets,
