" STEAM RAP;
Be it known that l, GEoneaA. Moni UE, a citizen of theUnite'd States, and a resident of Wood River, in the county ofMadis'on andthe State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam Traps, of which the following is a specification. l a a ,This invention relates to steam traps especially adapted for use in oonnectionwith,
bowl. A link 16 is adjustably connected a system of steam pipes;
An impQrtantob ect of this invention is to 'providea steam trapv having novel means whereby the discharge valve of "the same is automatically and quickly operated to expel the water upon being condensed.
The invention further aims to provide jnovel means wherebythe discharge valve is held in its elevated positionuntil the water contained within thebowl'is entirely dis- 7 charged and which when'seated will eff'portion of the bowl and conducts. the steam to thebowlwhere it isc'ond'ensed. The basefor bottom 6 is provided with a-disfectively prevent the leakage of the con- -densation of steam.
further object of the invention to provide a steam trapwhichis entirely automatic" in its operation and, which by rea-' son of the arrangement of parts, is not likely'to get-out oforder.
Q'Otherobjects andadvantages ofthe in. vention will be apparent duringthe course 9 of the following description.
i In Ithef accompanying drawlngs forming a part of thisapplication and'in which. like jnumerals" are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,'
Fig'ure 1-is a vertical sectional view through the improved steam trap) Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view a through the same, the view beingtakenon 11116 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspectiveof the operating meansfor the discharge valve ofthetrapi' In the drawingsf wherein for the purpose [of illustration is shown aflpreferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 1 p H inns upperportion with a longitudinal slot .36 which receives a pin; 38 carried by the *intermedi'ateportion of the branch 26.; 'With reference to (Figure 3, it willbe observed that 5 designates a bowl mounted Pupon a base6 and secured thereto by means of fastening devices in the nature of screw bolts 7'. An
inlet pipe 'mayb'ej connected to the'upper charge pipe 9 which carries off the con densation of steam, when. the "valve is auv it Specif cation of LettersdPatent.

'tomatically elevated due to the rise .of the water withinzthe bowl; v p Asillu'stratedin Figured, a s arranged vertically withinthe'bowl and 1s provided at a point adjacent its lower end with ears 11 to which the, forkedv ends 12 of an arm 13 are pivotally connected The-forward end of the arm 13 is provided descendswith the water contained within the to the arm 13 by meansof a collar 17 which is. secured in an adjusted position on'the arm by means of a set screw 18. Byadjustingthdcollar 17 1 along the; arm 13 the throwof thelink 16 maybe regulated; How-- a corresponding movement to the "link 16. I As the farm 13 partakesof avertical movement, the link [16i'is swung'to a-.limited ex tent on the pivot element? 22which; passes through cars 23 formed at the lower endof the 1ink16 and the upper side of the col- As the arm 13 is elevated whereby a pin25 carriedby one branch "26 of 'a" bell, cranklgenerally desig nated by the numeral 27 a is engagedwith the lower'vendwwall of a slot 28 formed ,in the upperportion ofthe link-16 a'ndextending i longitudinally of thesamefi When the lower end wall of the slot 28 contacts with the pin .25 thebell crank 27 is swung on its pivot 29 din a clockwise direction until the weight 30 carried by the otheribranch ofthe bell crank passes the vertical plane of the pivot element 29. lWhen the weight30 passes the vertical, center of the pivot 29 it moves downwardly in a" clockwise-directionby, force of gravity 'andthereby, elevates a valve stem 33.
The upper end of the valve stem 33 has pivotal connectionwith a short name provided the branch 26 is comprised of a pair of spaced parallel arms or sides which-consti tute guidesfor thellink 34 and=the upper portion ofthelink 16.
standard 10 withlga spherical float 14 which rises and the gravity in a clockwise direction, the pin 38 is elevated so as to engage the upper end wall of the slot 36 whereby the stem 30 is elevated. This, ofcourse, occurs only after the water reaches a predetermined leveland no movement is imparted to the steniuntil the water, reaches such level.- v a a The lower end of'the stem 33 is provided with a valve 40 which, seats upon avalve seat 41 formed immediately above theoutlet pipe9. m
The upward movement of the stem 33 and the-movement of the balance weight 30 in a clockwise direction is limited by means of a stop element 46 secured onthe stem and adapted to" engage a combined guide and stationary stop elements? which slidably receives the stem. The collar 46 may be adjusted on the stem 33 bymeans o'fia set screw 50so that the elevation ofthestem maybe regulated. 1
However, when the balance weight 30 passes the vertical plane of the pivot29 the branch 26; is swung rapidly in a' clockwise direction for unse'ating the valve.
As the water level recedes the link 16 is moved downwardly for returning the bell crank gradually to its original position. As the bell crank is returned the stem 33 is held in its elevated position by contact with a-ball 56 pressed into engagement with the stem by means ofa coil spring58 Thepre'ssure exerted by the spring 58 may be varied by means of an adjusting screw 60 threadedinto an opening in the standard. W'hen'thefloat 1 li'eaches the limit 'of its downward movement the pin 38 engages thelower end of the slot 36 forpromptlyreturning the valveflO to its seat. hen thus seated leakage of steam from the trap is absolutely "prevented. It will be observedthat the weight of the member 30 constantly bears on the valve 40 when the latter is seated, whereby the discharge opening is effectivelyclosed.
Having. thus fully described my invention v I of said slot with said pin for'operating-said I bell-crank, 'a second link connected to said stem andhaving a slot, a second pin connected to said branch and slidable within said slot, and a weight connected to said bell-crank for elevating the valve.
2. A'steam trap com arising a standard, a valve having a stem SllC ably associated with the standard, a float having a pivoted arm, a link adjustably connected to saidarm and having; its upper, end formed with a slot, a bell-crank having a branch provided with a pin slidable in said-slotwherebythe upward movement of said link engages the lower end of said slot withisaid pin. for operating said bell-crank, a second link connected. to said stem and having a slot, a second pin connected'to said branch andv slidable within said slot, awei'ght-connected to said bellcrank for elevating the valve, and means associated with said stem for holding the stem in'its elevated position until; the bellcrank completes its return movement.
Asteamtr'apcomprising a standard, a valvehaving a stem slidably associated with the standard, a float having a pivoted arm, a link adjustably connected to said arm and having its upper end formed with a slot, a bell-crank having a branch provided with a pin slidable insaid slot whereby the upward movement of saidlink eng( ges the lowerend of said slot with said pin-for operating said bell-crank, a second link connected to said stem and" having a. slot, a, second pin connected to said branch and slidable within crank for elevating the valve, and a stop element for limiting the vertical movement of said stem. e
l A steam trap comprising a standard, having a guide constituting a stop element, a valve having a stem slidable through said guide, a collar adjustable on said stem and adapted to engage said stop element whereby thevertical' movement of saidvalve is limited, a crank connected .to saidst-andard and having a branch, means connecting said branch .to'said stem, said crank being provided with a second branch having a weight, afloat having an :arm, a link connected to said armand having a slotted connection with the first named branch of said crank for moving the crank. when the float reaches a predetermined level, and means to secure said valve in an elevated position until the crank completes its return movement.
5. A steam trap comprising a support, a float pivoted to said support and having an arm, a link having a collar adjustably secured on said armaand'having its upper portion formed with a longitudinal slot, a-lever pivoted to'the upper portion of saidsupport and having a branch provided with a pin 'slidable in said slot,a guide-carried by said support, a valve having a stem passed through said. guide, a* link pivoted totthe upper end of s'aidstem andhaving a longitudinal slot, a pin connected to said branch and extended into said second named slot for elevating the second named link when the float reaches a predeterminedlevel, said lever being provided with a secondbranch having a weight normally arranged at one side of the vertical center and adapted to be swung to the other side of the vertical center of said support when the lever is swung on its pivot, a stop element adjustably 10 secured on said stem and adapted to engage said guide to limit the upward movement of said stem, a tensioning spring having means engaging said stem to secure the same in an elevated position until the lever completes 15 its return movement and means to said tenslonlng means.
