rLUsHING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
7, Pate ted Apr. 13, 1915.
Application filed May 27, 1914. Serial no. 841,259.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRIon WILHELM O'r'ro KRETER, a citizen of the Unlted States,
and a resident of San Antonio, in the county of BeXar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful-Improvements in Flushing Devices, of which the followmg 1s a specification.
,My invention relates to flushing devices for water-closets, andone of the main objects thereof is to provide a simple, positive, and comparatively inexpensive device which is readily applicable to any closet tank. I
A further object is to provide means. operable by the closet seat for setting the device, and resilient means for raising the valve when said seat resumes its normal position. I
A further object is to provide such devices which are readily adjustable to meet 7 different conditions; and a further object isto make the operation of the device en'- tirely automatic, therefore not requiring any action,.or even attention, on the part of the user of the closet.
My invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accomr panying drawings form a part, in which the same parts are designated by thesame reference characters in each of the views, and
in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a closet provided with my invention, partly 1n section; Fig. 2 is an enlarged, fragmentary,
view, partly in section, of details of the construction; F ig.-3 is a plan view ofa seat lever which I employ; and Fig. 4: is a side view thereof. 7 I
In the drawings forming a part of this application I have shown a water-closet a having a seat a pivoted thereto, and provided with the tank a and water supply pipe a, all of the usual or any desired construction, and a valve a normally closes the upper end of the pipe a My invention comprises a vertical tube 7) which is passed through a suitable opening in the bottom of the tank and held therein by means of lock-nuts b and b in such manner as to make the connection proof against leakage, as by washers, gaskets, or .the like,
and said tube is capped at its upper end, as
shown at b and provided with a longitudinally arranged slot b just beneath said cap.
lent,.is a band 0 which has a horizontal arm thereon and which in turn carries a vertical bar, as shown at 0 and 0*, respectively, and in the top of the said bar I pivot, as shown at 0 a lever 0? having arms c and c of unequal lengths, the shorter being toward the tube 6 and the longer directed outwardly therefrom and provided, adjacent its end, with a plurality of holes for adjustably'connecting a vertical rod 0 with said lever'o and which is in turn connected, preferably by means" of a slip joint, with the valve a.
Slidable vertically within the tube b is a rod d which carries a roller d at its lower end, in adjustable engagement therewith,
and said rod carries an arm 03 at its upper end and which projects through the slot 6 and in which it is movable longitudinally of the. tube, and Ipivotally connect a dog'to has a horizontal ,extension in one position thereof,- and a verticaleXtension, shown at' a? and with the inner end of which said hooked end 0Z of the dog is adapted to engage, and I provide a coil spring 6 within the tube I), normally forcing the rod 03, and connected arm d downwardly.
-Hinged to the closet seat a as shown at f, is a lever f upon the outer end of which the roller d of the rod 03 bears, saidlever having a shorter end P which normally rests against said'seat to prevent movement of 7 said lever below the horizontal line of said seat and to move said seat on itshinge when the outer end of the lever f? is depressed, but said lever may be moved in the opposite direction, on its hinge, to permit the seat to be moved into a fully raised position to rest against the tank, and the coil spring 6, through the rod d, normally holds the seat r in slightly raised position, as shown. When the seat is depressed by the weight of a person, the lever f forces the rod-d upwardly against the spring 6, and the dog d is moved upwardly, the hooked upper end thereof striking the under surface of the lever arm 0" and, because ofthe curved forv mation of the said lever arm, and of the said hooked end of the dog, said dog is moved on its pivot whereby the hooked end passes beyond the lever arm 0 and, by reason of the fact that the horizontal extension of said dog strikes against the under side of V 75 i I the outer end of the arm (i and which dog 7 the lever arm 0 said hooked end is again forced inwardly into engagement with said arm; when the closet seat is released from the weight which had been thereon, the spring a forces the rod downwardly and thus moves the lever '0 on its pivot, by means of the dog d into the alternate position shown in Fig. 2 whereby the valve 4: is raised from its seat, and the water from the tank is free to flush the closet bowl, the hooked end of the dog eventually slipping off the arm 0 to permit the valve a to re sume its normal position.
The bracket 0 is adjustable on the tube 1), and the roller 03 is adjustable in the rod d, whereby the relationship of the dog (i and lever end 0 may be acquired, and, while not so shown, I prefer to provide a lock-nut for said roller (Z at the lower end of the rod 03, and various other changes in and modifications of the details shown and described may be made, within the scope of the following claim, without departing from the spirit of my invention, or sacrificing its advantages.
My fiushing device acts directly on the ball valve of the tank, and may be applied to any type of tank, and I may also, al-
though not shown, connect my device with,
a suitable valve mechanism for the water Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a water-closet, of a hinged seat, a tank, a valve therein, a horizontal arm therein, a lever in pivotal connection with said arm, a vertically movable rod, a pivot on said rod, and a dog 011 said pivot having a hooked upper end for engagement with said lever, and a horizontal extension at the lower end of said dog arranged in the plane of said lever whereby said dog is forced into vertical position, in its upper movement, by contact with said lever, to insure said hock engagement with said lever.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
FRIEDRICH WILHELM OTTO KRETER.
