Be it known that l, CHARLIE L. GAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blackford, in the county of lobster and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful improvements in Cross Ties, oi" which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision of a metallic railroad tie equipped with a novel construction of means, whereby the rails of the track can be quickly and effectively clamped upon the tie, or removed therefrom as the occasion may require, the invention residing in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed.

Referring to the drawings in detail, 10 indicates a metallic tie of hollow rectangular formation in cross section. rfhe tie is open at both ends to receive the adjustable casings 1l, there being one of these casings arranged in each end of the tie and mounted for sliding` movement for a purpose to be presently described. The clamps 16 may be of any suitable wellknown construction, and are designed to embrace the base of the rail 13 to hold the rail iminovably positioned upon the tie. lt will be noted, that drainage space is provided between the base of the rail, and the top wall of the casing 11 to prevent the accumulation of water or the like.

within the keyehole slots above referred to, after which the casings 1l are singly adjusted to adjust the gage of the rails. In order to effect an adjustment of the casings 11 each is equipped with an adjusting rod 17 having a head i8 which is swiveled in the adjacent end of the casing 1l, the rod 17 being threaded as at 19, the threaded portion operating` through a block 20 which is secured within the tie by fastening elements 9.1. The outer extremity of each rod 17 is squared as at 22 to accommodate a wrench of suitable construction, so that the rods may be turned in either direction to slide the casing within the tie. The movements of the casings 1l obviously adjust the gage of the rails. The construction is very simple, and the tie in its entirety can be manufactured and sold at a very nominal cost.
While itis believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, l' desire to have it understood that l do not limit myself to what is hereinshown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.

1.. ln combination with a metallic tie having an opening in the upper wall thereof, of a casing` insertible in each end of the tie and arranged beneath said opening, rail clamps with headed bolts, the upper wall of said casing having oppositely disposed keyhole slots for the reception of said bolts, and means for adjusting said. casing longitudiH nally of the tie for the purpose specified.
2. rihe combination with a hollow metallic tie having an opening in the upper wall thereof, of a casing arranged' within the tie beneath said opening, said casing having oppcsitely disposed key-hole slots, rail clamps with headed bolts fitted within said slots, a rod having a head swiveled in the end of said casing and projecting from the adjacent end of the tie, said rod having a threaded portion, a block arranged within the'tie and having a threaded opening in which the threaded portion of the rod operates, whereby said casing may be adjusted longitudinally of the tie for the purpose specified.
