To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that T, HORACE FALK. Nau- MEYER, a citizen of the United States, res 1d= ing at Macun ie, in the county of Lehigh and State of ennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Treating Oil, of whlch the following is a specification.
This invention relates rimarily to processes for treating oil an more specifically to a process and apparatus for treating lubricating oils with a view to separating foreign matter, such as iron particles and the like, so as to cleanse the oil of matters which ordinarily prove injurious to machinery.
Another object of the invention 18 to provide an apparatus for treating oil in the manner above set forth which includes means for creating a magnetic field, and means for flowing the oil to be treated through or in proximity to the magnetlc field.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an ap afatus for treating oil which includes a casing having a tubular member mounted therein, a core of magnetizable material within the tubular member, a solenold surrounding the core, and means for energizing the solenoid whereby the 011 to be treated may be introduced into the tube and during its passage therethrough sub ected to a magnetic field for the purpose above set forth.
In addition to the foregoing my invention comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of the correlative parts to be hereinafter more full described and particularly set forth in t e appended claims.

With reference to the drawings, 10 indicates an oblong rectangular, casing, divided Y ber 14 projects beyond the top by means of a transverse portion to define a air of compartments 12 and 13.
ounted within the compartment 13 is a vertical tubular member 14 terminating at its lower end in an ofiset spout 15 which extends through an opening 16 which is formed in one vertical end wall of the casmg. The spout 15 may be formed separately of the tubular member 14 and secured thereto by solder, brazing or in any other suitable manner. The upper end of the tubular memlate of the casing, and enters a hopper or lling member 17. Mounted within the tubular member 14 is a soft iron core 18 of a slightly smaller diameter, having oppositely extending studs 19 formed integrally with its cylindrical wall to engage the inner surface of the tubular member 14 to maintain the core in spaced relation thereto, and to form an annular vertical channel between said core and the tubular member. The upper end of the core 18 is formed with a vertical, internally threaded opening 20 to receive the threaded shank 21 of a deflector member, said shank having a disc or valve head 22 formed upon its upper end and disposed in a horizontal plane with its periphery in closely spaced relation to the upper end of the tubular member 14 as shown in Figure 4. The deflector member 22 obviously extendsinto the hopper or filling member and when core 18 is not in its raised position, it seats on the upper end of the tube 14 to close the same. The tubular member 14 is encircled exteriorly by means of a pair of spaced annular members 23 between which a coil of wire 24 is wound. Located within the compartment 12 is an electric battery 25 which may be inserted therein by forming the other end Wall 26 in a manner to permit the same to be moved to open or closed position, and held in closed position b means of a catch 27 of any suitable type. ounted upon the top plate of the casing is a base plate 28 having a switch arm 29 mounted thereon about a pivotal point 30. The switch arm is adapted for contact with a stationary contact 31. The contact 31 is con nected to one terminal of the coil 24 while the other terminal is connected to a bindin post 32. The binding post 32 is connected to one ole of the battery and the other pole of the attery is connected to the switch arm 29, adjacent its ivotal connection 30.
In use, the oil to be treated is introduced into the hopper or filling member 17, and owing to the narrow passage defined by the closely spaced relation of the core 18 to the inner surface of the tubular member It, the oil is forced to ass slowly through said channel. Before t e introduction of the oil, the switch arm 29 is moved to closed posi tion whereby a magnetic field is set up which is the tubular member 14: by energization of said coil and the core 18 acts as a conductor for the lines of force. lhe deflector plate 22 becomes magnetized and opens the tube and when oil is poured into the filling member, it first flows over said plate before entering the tube 14. The oil then flows into the tube around the core and after being acted upon by the magnetic field, it exits through the spout 15.
When used cylinder oil is treated in this manner, all metallic particles are removed therefrom as well as carbon formed by the combustion of the oil. It will be obvious that the solenoid 24 may be eliminated and the core 1.8 instead of being composed" of soft iron may be a permanent magnet of hardened steel, thereby obviating the necessit of current supplying means.
l Vhile I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations thereover may be made, and I therefore desire to reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction, or otherwise altering the arran e ment of the correlative parts without eparting from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.

An apparatus for treating oil including a. casing, a tubularmember vertically disposed therein, a spout terminating at the lower end of the said tubular member, a hopper mounted at the upper end of said tubular member, a core mounted in said tubular member in spaced relation thereto to define an annular channel, integrally formed studs on said core engaging the inner surface of the tubular'member to retain said core in spaced relation thereto, a deflector plate, a
shank formed integrally therewith, and having a threaded connection with the core, whereby the deflector plate is disposed in spaced relation to the upper end of the tubu-' lar member and is located within the hop per, a solenoid surrounding the tubular member, to set up a magnetic field therewithin to energize the core, shank and deflector plate, a battery afi'ording a source of current located within the casing, and means for establishing or disesta'blishing connection between the source of current and the solenoid.
4. In a device of the class described, a tube, a hopper therefor, a solenoid surrounding said tube, a core therein, a plate carried by the core and disposed in said hopper, and normally resting upon the to of said tube to'close the same and adapte to rise from its seat when the solenoid is energized.
