Description

A. BRUNS.
BAG.
APPLICATlON FILE-D JAN. 7, 1922.
426 8 1 4 Q Paented Aug. 22, 1922 INVENTOR A TTORNE Y NHTED STATE AUGUST BRUNS, OF BROOKLN, NEW YORK. r
BAG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22., 1322.,
Application filed January 7, 1922. Serial No. 527515.
TO all wwm t may come m.:
Be it known that I, AUoUsT BRUNS, a CitiZen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, New York city, in the County and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bags, of which the following is a Specification.
This invention relates to bags of the type used by mechanics, plumbers, and others for Carrying tools, although not limited thereto since it is applicable to other types of bags and for general use; and the object thereof is toprovide a bag which will long withstand heavy loads and the rough usage to which it may be subject.
My new bag comprises, as its principal features, a flat bottom of stif material, pre-ferably sheet metal with upturned fianged edges, and a stout body of canvas or other suitable heavy material preferably waterproof, which around the base is folded back upon itself and sewed down so as to form a pocket, preferably of a depth to reinforce with its double folds the lower portion of the body for a substantial distance above the bottom, and which is then united to the bottom by bolting or riveting the double folds of material and an intermediate strip or strips of metal inserted in and resting on the bottom of the pocket. around the body to the edges or to the metal flanges of the bottom.
The invention will be understood by reference to the acoompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspeotive View of my improved bag, in its preferred form, and Fig. 2 is a broken or partial transverse section of the bag, on an enlarged Scale.
.As herein illustrated, the bottom 1 of the bag, which is shaped up from a sheet metal blank, is rectangular in form and is provided with upturned side and end flanges 2 and 3. The two sides 4 and 'ends 5, which form the body of the bag, are folded inwardly around the bottom and sewed down by a line of stitches 6 to form the deep pocket 7 and are suitably united together. Metal strips 8' having been inserted in the pocket thus formed, the body is united to the bottom by screw bolts 9, or rivets as an equivalent, which pass through both folds of the pocket, the intermediate metal Strip inclosed therein, and a flange of the bottom. An extension 10, on one side of the body, serves s flap o r cover, The bag is completed by the addition of suitable straps 11,
for closing and Carrying it.
As thus constructed, the bag is both rein- 'foroed by an extra thickness of canvas around substantially the lower half of the body and the weight loaded on the bottom and carried by the body when the bag is in use is not concentrated at the rivet points but is distributed entirely around the bag.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A bag of the character described comprising a stifi' flat metal bottom with, narrow upturned flanged edges and a body of heavy waterproof material like canvas which around its base is folded back upon and secured to itself to form a pocket and is secured to the fianged edges of the bottom by means of metallic :fasteners passing through both fo-lds of the pocket and an intermediate Strip of metal inserted in and resting on the bottom of the pocket.
2. A bag of the character described comprising a stf metal bottom with upturned flanged edges and a body of heavy material like canvas which around its lower side is folded back upon and secured to itself to form a pocket of a depth adapted to reinforce with its double folds the lower portion of the body for a substantial distance above the bottom and is secured to the flanged edges of the bottom by means of metallic fasteners passing through both folds of the pocket and an intermediate strip of met-al inserted in and resting on the bottom of the pocket.
3. A bag for tools and similar heavy arti cles Comprising a flat rectangular bottom of suitable stiif material, a rectangular body of a heavy fieXible material like oanvas which around the base of its sides and end is folded back and sewed down to form a pocket, strips of metal inserted in and resting on the bottom of the pocket along the sides and ends of the body, and a series of metallic fasteners se curing the double folds of the pocket and enclosed strips of metal to the sides and ends of the bottom.
4. A bag for tools and similar heavy articles comprising a rectangular metal bottom with upturned flanged sides and ends, a rectangular body of a heavy flexible material like canvas which around the base of its sides and ends is folded back and sewed down to form a pocket of a depth adapted to reinforce to a substa ntarl height the entire lower portion, strips of metal nserted material like Oanyas Which around the base n and Testing On the bottom of the pocket of its sides and ends s folded back and along the sides and ends of the body, and seWed doWn to form a pocket and is seeured series of metailic fasteners securing the at its sides and ends to the flanged sides and 15 double folds of the pocket and enolosed ends of the body by metallie 'fasteners passtrips of metal to the sides and ends of the sing' through the double folds of thepooketbottom. and strips of metal nserted in and' Testing 5. A bag' 'for tools and similar heavy art'i'- On' the bottom thereof and is provided With cles eomprising a reetangular metal bottom an extension on One side serving as a flap 20 With 'narrow' upturned flanged sides and and with straps attached to both sides. ends, a rectangular body of heavy te xtile 'AUGUST BRUNS:
