Be it known that l, ONEsrMn HEBERT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oklahoma city, in the county of Oklahoma and State of Uklahoma, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Combination Car and Train-Pipe Couplings, of which the following is a specification;
My invention relates to improvements in draft appliances, consisting more particularly of the improvement in combination car the provision of pipe blocks on each coupling head, in which the train pipes are so arranged that a tight compression oint will be formed between the pipes, upon coupling the heads together.

In carrying out my invention I provide the coupling heads l which contain Jfeatures covered by another application. rlie essence of the present invention lies in the peculiar arrangement of the pipe. blocks 31 carried by each coupling head. A brief description fof' the principal structural features of the coupling heads 1 in order to impart a clearer understanding of the relationship of the pipe blocks to the coupling heads, is thought to be of advantage.
Briefly then, the coupling heads 1 include the knuckles 3 which are arranged to interlock with the companion coupling heads as shown in Figure 3. llach knuckle has a shoulder which engages the edge of a lock opening la in the companion coupling heads, and the portion l-b of the knuckle adjacent to the wall of the coupling is cut away to provide a' wear compensating space. This space also enables the automatic maintenance of a constantly tight joint between the train pipes. Dogs 24 operate to disengage the knuckles. The dogs 24 include short levers QGYby which the dogs are operated.
' Each knuckle has an ear 7 which partly projects through an opening in the coupling head, and is mounted on a pin supported in ears 10 cast on the outside of the coupling head. Each head has a coupling pin on which the end member 16 of a drawbar 19' is mounted. rlhe drawbar is made in sections and has a spring 24 between the sections. The inter-engagement of the oppositely inclined surfaces of a bridge 17 on the members 16, with the inclined surfaces 18 of a recess in each head 1, keeps the head in alignment with the drawbar.
Proceeding nowy with the description of the invention, it should be observed that the lower end of each coupling pin 15 projects beyond the bottom of the coupling head 1 as at 15a. This projection of the coupling pinl forms an abutment for one end of a base 32 of the pipe block 31. The base 32 is an integral part of the pipe block, but itv will be observedin 1Figure 4, that it extends a short distance toward the rear, where it engages the abutment 15a. The base is so shaped to form flanges 32a at the sides as shown in Figure 5.
The flanges 32 engage guides 30 cast upon the bottom of the coupling head 1. The pipe block 31 is simply slid between the guides until the projecting end of the base 32 engages the abutment 15a. The pipe block 31 may be held in position either by friction or some suitable device for fastening the pipe block to the. coupling head.
Each pipe block 31 has one of more longitudinalpassages or bores 31, in which short pipe sections 33 are located. When the coupling is'liarrangedtofbe Vused on passenger cars, the pipe'blockl is constructed for three train pipes, but when the coupling is used on freight cars, the pipeblock lis constructed for only a single train pipe; Each pipegsection extends a shortdistance beyond the ends of the pipeA blocks. .These projecting ends of the pipesection yare threadedto receive nuts-.34.`

Thehose' pieces ,are made of 'some flexible material as rubber, and it can readily be understood lthat when the action described takes place, the jointbetween the'pipe sectionswill be very-effective in retainingl the Huid in the pipe. rlhe gaskets 39 are also made of some slightly compressible material, so that the joint will be very tight.

3. A car coupler head provided with a detachably mounted pipe block and a pin passing vertically through said head for connecting said head to a drawv bar, said pin serving also as an abutment for said pipe block.
4. A car coupler head in combination with a detachable pipe block, the connection be! tween saidhead and block comprising an open ended undercut way in one and a corrk responding tongiie in the other, wherebythe pipe block may be engaged with the coupler head vby a longitudinal movement, an abutment on said head against which the reary ot thepipe block is rigidly lseatedand which resists rearward movement of said pipe block.
