IMPROVEMENT IN BQILERS AND CONDENSERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,663, dated September 9, 1873; application Iiled J une 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN T. BABBITT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Boilers and Gondensers, of which the following is a specification:
vThis invention generally consists in an arrangement, Within an upright cylinder or case, of a central tubular body, composed, for the most part, of a number of rings mounted one upon the other, andV provided with a number of hollow radial arms of tapering construction in their longitudinal section at or from points all around the rings, and preferably arranged in staggering relation, or so that the radial arms of either one ring occupy an intermediate position or out of line with the radial arms immediately above or below them. The. invention furthermore consists in a bifurcated construction of the hollow radial arms.
A boiler or condenser constructed in accordance with this invention is at once safe, simple, and efficient, and is readily put together or taken apart.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification, Figure l represents a partly-broken outside view of a boiler constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same in a plane at right angles to Fig. l; Fig. 3, a partiallybroken plan, and Fig. 4 a horizontal section, through the upper portion of the boiler. Referring, in the first instance, to Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the drawing, A represents an upright cylinder or case, which, when the boiler is designed fordomestic purposes, or is of a portable description, may be of sheetiron, and is mounted by a cap, B, having a draft-outlet, b, for the gaseous products of and D the ash-pit. E is the tubular body of the generating portion of the boiler, arranged centrally within the case A, and composed,
for the most part, of a number of rings, d, mounted and iitted by annular tongue and groove, one upon the other, and closed by end caps e e, the whole being secured together by a bolt, f. Each of these rings d is provided with a number of hollow radial arms, F, of tapering construction in their longitudinal section, diminishing outward at or from points all around the rings, and arranged in staggering relation, or so that the radial arms of either one ring occupy an intermediate position with the radial arms immediately above or below them.
These radial arms. F, which are closed at their outer ends, and in communication at their inner ends with the tubular body E, constitute the steamgenerating portion of the boiler, the water being introduced at any suitable point into the tubular body E, and the steam escaping by one or moreoutlets, g, attached to the cap B.
To increase the capacity and generating surface of the boiler, the hollow tapering radial arms F may be made bifurcated, or with side branches h, which, by their angular arrangement in relation to the main arms, will materially assist, in connection With the hereinbefore-specied staggering arrangement of said main arms, to intercept or spread the heated gases as they escape to the outlet b, thereby obtaining a very efficient heating-surface.
In a boiler constructed asfdescribed, too, a ready escape is provided for the steam and'for sediment, together with a perfect circulation, and the whole is readily put together or taken apart. It is likewise safe, and, in case of damage to one section or part, the same is easily replaced by a duplicate thereof.
Advantages of corresponding importance, in part or in whole, are obtained for the application of the invention to a condenser, the parts composing the invention being similarly constructed and arranged, there being the same outer case A and tubular body E, composed of rings d, held together by a central bolt, f, and having hollow tapering radial arms F at or from points all around the rings, and set staggering in relation with the arms above or below them; also, if desired, being made bifurcated--that is, with branches h.
The branches or openings b g and i k serve to admit the vapor or gases to be condensed, and provide for escape of the products of condensation, and to introduce and provide for escape of the water or fluid by which condensation is effected, the one set of openings, b g, establishing communication with the case A, and the other branches or openings, i 7a, with the tubular body E and hollow tapering arms attached thereto. The vapor or gas to be condensed may either be circulated through the case or through the body, with its attached hollow arms. In either case, a very efficient condensing surface and action are obtained.
In some cases, or if preferred, the central tubular body E, instead of being composed of independent rings d, may be in one piece or of a single length.
It is immaterial, so far as the invention is concerned, how the outer shell or case is constructed, as such may vary, both in shape and construction, according to the purpose to which the invention is designed to be applied, and oth er circumstances.
What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
