ySpecification of-,i'ietter's atent.L Paten-ted, vAug,l
Application mea March 24,v 1921.v `serial No; ,1.154,993;`
To @ZZ 107mm t may concern' Be it known that FRANK PARIZEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Caps for Gasoline or Similar Receptacleaof whichthe following isa full. clear, concise," and exact description7 reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, forming` a part' of inthe tank through the vent due .to splash ing' ot the liquid because of movements of the tank. or from` any other cause.
It is still a further purpose of the invention to provide a screw cap of the character described above that has screwthreaded engagement with the tank upon which it is mounted and which is provided with 'circuitous passages to establish communication between the tank and the outerfair. The cap is preferably provided with a cross rib on the top thereof that is hollow land which is separated from the hollow body portion ot.' the cap by a partition provided with openings communicating` with the space in the body portion and the hollow of the rib, and provided with an opening in a wall of the rib communicating with the outside air and with the space within the rib.
It is also an object Aof the invention to provide a cap of the character described above with passages connectingV the space within the rilI with the space 'within-*the cap that extend at an oblique angle to the vertical so that any liquid that may be splashed into the chamber in the rib will readily flow down the walls of said passages into the receptacle to which the cap is attached.
Other objects and advantages oit the invention will appear as the description or"V the accompanying drawings 4'showing` one form that the invention may take proceeds. However, I desire to have it distinctly understood that I do not intend to Vlimit Vmyself to the enact details shown and described but that I intend to include as part of my inventionfa'll such obviouschanges and modilications'fof parts as would -occur' 'to a person skilled in this'vart and 'as'woul'd fall withiny the scope o ithe, claims.
ln tlie'drawingsi. i i Fig. l' isa'plan view of Cer;
' 3 is la side elevation'ofaslightly inodiiedform." 'i f h Referring in detailto the drawingsthe. limproved 'capf comprises a cylindrical'body 4 portion 4l"whichis 'shown #as being 'in- Aternally fscrewthreaded at 5 but which may be s crewthreaded either externally or are improved is a' vertical section thereof; Vand internally,I asis common wi'tlicaps of this .'cliaracte'r, hdepending', upon the manner in which thereceptacle upon which the cap is used is threaded. the 'capU being shown as being Hexternally screwthreaded at`- 5 in Fig'.
vpurpose to provide a cap of thefgfeneral` character' outlined that is providedvvith`v y The said cap islprovided with a .closed end portion 6 as isl customary and is provided 'with a' transverse rib 7,' which 'so i vent openings so as tol permit air t-oenter f the tank and'y break yany vacuum that might occur therein due to emptying' of? the same 'i y'and thus permit the flow of liquid from,
the same to continue without interruption due to this cause. Caps have'been "ordi-` narily provided withl vent l holes that merely extended through the closed end of the cap 4and through which the liquid in the tank quite often .leaked upon agitation ot' the liquid kin the tank from any cause,'- such asflor instance, in the'case wherefthe tank is mounted'on a vehicle, theagitation or the liquid` due to movement .of the ve-f" i i hicle, 'In order to yavoid this objection to `thevent .openings in a cap the` particular construction of cap used yin the present device has been developed. ln' the present ioo device the rib is provided with a space 'S within the same and this spaceis sepa-A rated from the space within the cylindrical portion of thecap by means of `a partition- 9, the Vpartition 9 being' formed in part in#r tegral withl the vbody portion ofthe cap-4, and the opening' remaining in the jsame be-y ing closed by means of theL plate A10, it-being necessary to `make the'l device/fin this manner as the castingcould lnot be made with a complete partition'betweenthejrib iio and the body portion. of the cap Without providing an opening somewhere in the rib or cap to permit the removal of the core used in making the mould for the casting.
.It is preferred to leave this opening in the partition and close it with the plate l0 as this would leave the external surfaces of the cap and rib a smooth casting with no breaks therein. The edges of the partition 9 adjacent the opening therein are provided with oii'set portions 14;, and the edges of the plate l() are forced into engagement therewith so as to assume a shape corresponding thereto, to itirmly hold said plate lO in place. lt will be noted that the partition 9 is arched so as to follow substantially the same curvature as the outer surface or' the cap so that any liquid that might collect in the chamber 8 will flow down the curved surface of the partition 'to theouter lowermost edge portions thereof. The partition 9 between the rib and body portion of the cap is provided with a plurality of passages l1 which preferably extend at an oblique angle to the axis of the cap, and the upper wall of the rib 7 is provided with a passage l2 leading to the outer air.
rlhe passages ll are placed at an oblique .angle as shown in Fig. 2 so that it any liquid is splashed up into the same it will readily run down the lower oblique wall o1"- the passage into the tank and will thus aid in preventing clogging of the openings by means of drops of the liquid. The openings ll are located adjacent the outer edge ot the partition so that any liquid in the chamber 8 will flow into the same and down the. walls thereof into the receptacle upon which the cap is secured..
It will be seen that in this manner a circuitous passage is provided ttor the passage of air from the outside ot the tank to the interior thereof through the opening l2, space 8, and through the openings ll. Due to this structure the liquid it splashed up against the cap will not passv beyond the space 8 under any circumstances, and will in l ordinary circumstances not pass beyond the passages il, and it will thus be seen that there will be very little possibility that any ol the liquid willibe splashed out through the opening l2. The cap is provided with a convexed outer surface i3 so as to vgive the caps a better appearance and the rib 7 is preferably curved at 14 on substantially the same radius as the cap.
