DAVID ZAKII/i, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR T0 STERLING MIETALt-NQVELTY MFG (30., INC OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A. CORPORATION OF NEWYQR I{ LEAD rnncrn I-uIdW Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern: v y
Be it known that 1, DAVID Z I a citizen of Poland, and a residentflof Bronx in the county of Bronx and State of New York,
have invented certain new and useful 1111- p p terior tubular barrel or'casing f of the pencil,
provenients in Lead Pencils vof which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements" in mechanical leadpencil's of the clutch type; and, it resides in certain novel features hereinafter described whereby within the barrel; of a clutch vpencil I -,provi'de' a reservoir for leads to 'b'elusedlwith the'pencil. Mechanical pencils ofthe plunger type have been equippedv with chambers for'holding reserve leads, but I'am not aware that a clutch pen cil has been so constructed, as to providefa reservoiror chamber for reserve leads, and my invention isconiinedto means for ion ing within the barrel of a clutch penc heX terior to the clutchtube an adequate cha nber for holding reserve leads, v
The clutch pencil of my invention comprises an exterior tubularbarrel tapered at its forward end to iorma tip member, a clutch tube within said barrel, a head carrying said clutch tube and threaded to engage a projectionor thread within the rear end of said barrel and a tubularinember located within said barrel and eXteriorto and encompassing the clutch tube, said-tubularmernber permittingof a free sliding movement of the clutch tube through it and having at its ends laterall-yextending ineans for engaging the inner wall oftheexteriorbarrel and forming a chamber between itself and the exterior barrel for receiving a reserve stock ofleads; p,
The invention will be fully understood from the detailed "description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accolnpanying drawings, in which; p I
Fig. 1' is a central longitudinal section through a clutch "pencil constructed in accordance with and embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective viewof thetubular niemberprovided by me for-insertionwithin the exterior barrel of thepencil and form-f ing with said barrel the reservoir forjreserve' leads I p Fig. 3 is atransverse section 'throughthe lead pencil, taken on the dotted line3+3 of Fig. 1";

Inaccordance with my .c'on-I str-uction the slots lfiiofthe c lltch -tube 12' I terminate within thelforward-portion of the barrel or casing 10,, and hence the tube 12 I from the inner ends oi -the slots'lfi to" the. nut 14E present integral 5 mootnunbrokea surfaces. l I p I In e nce' Wlth ,my invention I lnsert,
into the outer casing orbarrel 10 thereser voir-forn ing member 18 separately illustrated in Fig. 2 and consisting, of atube 19 fer to make the same .ofs sheet, metal .andof cup forinand to give the samexsuch propo'rvtionsas will insure, byfthefit oi 'stl within theb arrel 1Q thereinalningstatioriea ary of the member 18 after said member has been introduced to position within said barrel. The arms 21 1 form from the material of the tube 13 by slitting the end of the tube and bending the slitted members outwardly to form the arms 21 and forwardly extending arms 22. The arms 22 also tightly tit within the exterior casing or barrel 10 and aid in maintaining the member 18 stationary and properly spaced from the inner walls of said casing. The tube 19 is of a diameter to snugly receive the clutch tube 12 and to permit said tube to have its usual movements forwardly and backwardly in the customary manipulation of a clutch pencil. The tube 19 is beneficial in its relation to the clutch tube 12 in that it serves as a guide for said tube 12 and helps to maintain. the same concentrically within the exterior casing or barrel 10. I provide the tube 19 more especially for the purpose of forming be tween itself and the inner walls of the exterior casing or barrel 10 a chamber 23 to serve as a reservoir for reservoir leads, which I number 24. The arms 21 space the tube 19 at its rear end from the inner walls of the barrel 10 and leave entrance spaces,
23 and as a support for the leads 2% during the use of the pencil. The arms 21 by being widely spaced apart, as shown. in Fig. 3, form entrance spaces for the leads 2 1, and also as means for guiding the clutch end of the tube 12 to the tube 19, through which said tube 12 is passed on being introduced to its position shown in Fig. 1.
hen leads are to be introduced to the chamber 23 the head 13 and tube 12 are withdrawn from the exterior casing or barrel 10, and after the leads 24; have been inserted between the arms 21. and into the chamber 23, said head and tube 12 are restored to position, the leads 24: then being confined within the chamber 23 and be i tween the head 20 and the nut 1 1 carried by said head, as represented in Fig. 1. The reservoir forming member 18 keeps the leads 24c separated from the tube 12 or from in any manner interfering with the operation of said tube. The member 18 is comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and converts the clutch pencil into a reservoir pencil adapted for holding a reserve stock of leads. I i
I do not limit my invention to all of the details of form and construction hereinbefore described for carrying out my invention, but I recommend the construction shown in Fig. 2 since it is one which has proven to be of practical merit.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
