- This invention relates to V groove bearings for weighing-scales. These V groove bearings are usually agate blocks with a V groove in the top. It is the object of the present invention to provide a bearing which is not only self-'aligniijg but which will adjust itself to bring the groove bottom into line to line engagement with the knife edge instead of a one point engagement. This construction is especially designed for. use with a double knife edge bearing such as shown in the drawings. In a double knife edge bearing the knife edge cannot climb in its bearing and jump over the agate block.

This invention relates to V groove bearings for weighing-scales. These V groove bearings are usually agate blocks with a V groove in the top. It is the object of the present invention to provide a bearing which is not only self-'aligniijg but which will adjust itself to bring the groove bottom into line to line engagement with the knife edge instead of a one point engagement. This construction is especially designed for. use with a double knife edge bearing such as shown in the drawings. In a double knife edge bearing the knife edge cannot climb in its bearing and jump over the agate block. In the ordinary agate V groove block which is cemented into the post recess, when the cement dries the V groove bottom often sags or draws angularly away from the knife edge, leaving a one point bearing for the knife. Nith this one point bearing the load will quickly wear into the agate block. This difficulty is obviated in my improved bearing which has the adaptability within small l1mits of not only adjusting itself on a vertical axis to the knife edge but also the capacity of turn ing with respect to the knife edge upon a horizontal axis.

When these screws are-screwed against the block the knife edge resting within the groove of the block, this block will swing around on a vertical aXisand align itself to the knife. The amount of twisting move ment required is very smallabout 3-4 thousandths of an inch and hence the block will twist in between the points of the screws or pins this small amount.
The screw points hold the block which rocks on the round rib i in the bottom of the cradle. 'This permits the V groove block to align itself by rotation in a vertical plane on an axis perpendicular or transverse to. the
plane of the knife edge and thereby cause the bottom of the groove to contact with the knifeedge in line to line engagement. A
bearing of this kind would be of little value unless there is some positive device for lookthe screw 9 so that the knife edge 0 cannot rise out of the V block.
The cradle 9' preferably hangs suspendedfrom the pins 7 and spaced from the bottom of the recess so it too has freedom of move ment to facilitate the V groove bottom lining up with the knife edge.

I am not the first one to fulcruma lever upon a floating hearing as loops have been used in heavy duty scales to support the knife edges but l-do believe that no one heretofore has supported a V block to rock and twist in the manner that I have indicated.
It will be noticed that the pivots support the block in spaced relation with respect to the side wall of the cradle and hence permit it to twist on a vertical axis and r ck on a horizontalaxis, This spacing is referred to in some of the claims as a block supported in isolated relation.
What I claim is: v

A hearing for the purpose specified, having in combination with a'kniti'i'e edge, a V groove block, a pair of set screws and support through which said set screws are adjustable toengage with the V groove block and to suppert the V groove block to reckon an axis perpendicular to the knife edge 2. A hearing for the purpose specified, having in combination with a knife edge, a V groove block, set screws for bearing against the side of the V groove block, and a cradle in the form oi? a stamping having a rib stamped in its bottom and ears turned up at the sides for engaging loosely about the block, said block being thereby supported to rock on an axis transverse of the knife edge.
3 In a bearing for the purpose specified, the combination or a double knife edge with aligned downwardly and upwardly-pointed knife edges so that the two knife edges have a common axis of rotation a fixed member on the scale engaging against the upwardlypeinting' knife edge to lock the downwardly directed knife edge in its bearing a V groove block acting as the bearing for the downwardly-directed knife edge, and means for supporting said V groove block to float.
l. A bearing for the purpose specified, having in combination with a knife edge, a V groove block, pins with ends engaging opposite points on the sides of the a groove block, and a cradle hung from said pins and provided on its bottom with a portion on which the a groove block may rock 5. A hearing for the purpose specified, having in combination with a knife edge, a V groove block, pins with ends for hearing at opposite points on the sidescot the V groove block, and a cradle in the form of a stan'iping having perforated ears through which the said pins pass and which serves to hang the cradle upon the pins, said cradle being provided with a rib in its bottom on which the said block may reek.
