Description

y 'n. L. HUFF.
Clothes Reels.
IN Ii. 142,631 Patented September 9,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFIO DENNIS L. HUFF, OF BAY CITY, MICHIGAN.
IMPRQVEMENT IN CLOTHES-REELS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 14.2,fi31, dated September 9, 1873; application filed July 26, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DENNIS L. Horn, of Bay (lity, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented anew and Improved Clothes-Reel, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the horizontal revolving reels used for hanging clothes to dry;
and it consists of an arrangement of tie rods reel.
Constructed in this way the metal spider is subject to great strain both in supporting the weight of the clothes and in resisting the upward strains sometimes caused by strong gusts of wind on the clothes, and often breaks. The arms also frequently break close up to the spider unless made much larger and heavier than it is desirable to make them. Now, I propose, for re-enforcing and bracing said spider and'arms against both the upward and downward strains, to strengthen them with braces, and for this purpose I propose to avail myself of the facility aliorded therefor by the arrangement of the arms to ascend from the spider outward, whereby they can be secured by tie-rods extending across the top of the post and connecting each pair of arms in the same right line, but on opposite sides of the spinder, and so I attach the rods E to each pair of arms, securing the said rods or bars by a bolt or screw passing through them at each end and through the arms. To have the braces 0r tie-rods cross each other properly, I will arrange them one above another, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. These braces will thus greatly relieve the spider from undue strain; also the arms near the spiders.
H represents an inverted cup-shaped device applied to the spindle to shed rain from the end of the post, so as to prevent rust, freezing, decay, 8:0. 7
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the tie-rods or bars E with the arms D and spider G of a clothes-reel, substantially as herein shown and described.
Witnesses: DENNIS L. HUFF.
FATIO COLT,
A. G. Ronrson.
