INVFINTOIRI WITNESSES:

lMPROl/EMENT lN POWDER-F LASKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,614, dated September 9, 1873; application filed uly 28, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATIJAS 0mm, of the city of Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Powder-Flasks, of which the following is a full description, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view with one of the heads removed; Fig. 2, a similar side view; Fig. 3, a plan of the interior cylinder; Fig. 4, a side view of the supporting-neck; Fig. 5, a crosssection on line 00 as of Fig. 3 Fig. 6, aback view of the plate 1; Fig. 7, an inside view of one of theheads; Fig. 8, an under view of the exterior cylinder; and Fig. 9, a crosssection on line 3 3 of Fig. 4.
My invention consists in attaching to any ordinary powder-flask a measuring device, for measuring and discharging a given quantity of powder into a gun by simply elevating and depressing the flask; and in the several devices by which this result is accomplished, as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, A represents the upper end of a flask; B, the outermeasuring-cylinder; 0, the discharge-tube, D, the interior cylinder; E, the heads of cylinderB; F, locklever, G, an extension, and H a neck, which together constitute a support for the measurin g cylinders; I, partition plate of the interior cylinder, by which the amount of powder to be discharged is regulated; at, springs for returning the cylinder to position, a similar one, not shown, being at the opposite end; I), hook or catch forthe outer end of the spring a,- c, spring for locking the lever F; d, support for said lever; 0, opening in the extension G, into which a hook on the lower end of the lever F enters and locks the device; f, brackets or extensions of the heads E, by means of which such heads are secured to the neck H; 9, setscrew, by means of which, with the holes 1,2, and 3, the charge of powder to be used is either increased or diminished; h, back spring for the plate I; c', stationary partition plate in the cylinder D; j, pins to which the inner ends of the springs to are fastened; 7r,elo11- gated openings into which the ends of the. shaft of the cylinder D are fitted to prevent the cylinder from turning; l, screw, and m openings, by means of whichone of the spriu ghooks I) is removably secured to the cylinder B. The hook at the opposite end of this cylinder is soldered or otherwise permanently attached and n, cutoff at the upper end of the inwardly-inclined portion of the neck H.
- The completed flask, the upper end of which is shown at A, is made in any of the ordinary forms and sizes.
The screw-plate at the top is provided with a neck having an extension, G, as shown at Figs. l and 4. The heads E are attached to this neck by screws, as shown; and the interior cylinder has its shaft passed through these heads, which shaft may be additionally secured by screws, as shown at E, Fig. 2.
The cylinder D remains stationary, while the cylinder B, with its tube 0, are made to revolve one-fourth of the distance, more or less, in the heads E, and around the cylinder D. The amount of powder to be delivered at one discharge is regulated by the plate I, which discharges a greater quantity as it is moved from 1 to 3, and vice versa.
The device is made of sheet or other suitable metal, and arranged so that it can be taken apart for repairs or cleaning. v
The upper end of the lever F passes through a slot in the tube (3, so that it can be depressed. It is held in position by the spring 0, and is locked when the tube is in the position shown at Fig. 1. In this position the communication between the tube 0 and the interior cylinder is cut off, and that between the cylinder and flask is open.
In operation, the tube 0 is inserted in the gun-barrel, which operation also inverts the flask and depresses the lever F, so as to unlock it. The flask is then turned downward, which brings the discharge-tube opposite upper opening of the cylinder D, and cuts off the lower opening. The powder contained in D is then dischargedinto the gun. When the tube 0 is withdrawn from the gun the springs to return it and the cylinder B to their original position, when the operation can be repeated.
I thus make a device which will measure and discharge a quantity of powder by simply 2. The combination and arrangement of the raising and depressing the flask. cylinder B and 1), heads E, spring a, spring If desired, the end plates of the cylinder D lever F, and. tube 0 with the flask A, substanmay be thickened to give greater strength to tially as and for the purpose set forth.
hold its shaft or supports. MATIJAS OILIK.
YVhat I claim as new is as follows: 1. The combination of the cylinder B and Witnesses:
tube 0 with the cylinder D and heads E, sub- L. L. BOND,
stantial'ly as specified. A. W. BOND.
