ion Box..
To all whom t may concern: 4 v y Be it known'that l, MiGUiiLGoNZALnZ, a
citizen of Venezuela, and resident'of New York city, in the county 'of New York Aand State of New York, have invented certainl new and useful improvements in lee Boxes, ofy which the following` is a speciiicati'o'n.
The invention relates ingeneral to an ice box of the cabinet type` and*particularlyrelates to an ice box of the type in which a large' volume of water is .designed to be stored and filtered for potable purposes and which may be cooled for drinking purposes.
The present invention constitutes an improvement over the *form* of ice ybox disclosed in my patent No. 1,367,693, February 8th, 1921. y
vln the previous patent it was notedtliat 'the available water in Somelocati'ons'is'not suitable for drinking purposes and it "was suggested that vthe water -be stored in the box vand, chemically treated before it was used.' l With some characters of watersl it is `necessary to filter the water'either withA or without the chemical treatment previously suggested.
The present disclosure features the providing of anice box designed to resemble conventional forms of such articles of household furniture and which can be utilized to store large volumes of'water, to filter and cool the water'as it is'used, and at the same` time to` preserve theexternal appearance so that the box will appear to be of the usual form.
The difliculty with such forms of ice boxes is that the water storing'space must be large in order to storethe necessary amount of water and where large volumes of waterfare caused vto pass through the usual small filter the sediment rapidlyl accumulates in any usual form of filtering deviceand must be replaced or cleaned ltoo frequently to be of any commercial value. y I
One of the objects vof the present invention isto'provide a cabinetform of ice `box of the type outlined in `which a relatively large water storing compartniei'it is 1' provided without materially modifyingthe external appearance ofthe box and which fea# tures a 4slow acting ltering partition'which can be'made of relatively large "area to accommodatev the large compartment and which can be readily installed in position' of device which can be readily cleaned, the

vinvention also features a form'of vwatercon- Various other objects and advantagesofl the invention will be in part obvious from an inspection "of the accompanying 'draw-w ings andin part 'will befmoiieffully set yforth in the following particular description of one form of mechanism embodying my inventiomand the inventionfalso' consists i'n certain new and novel features'of coi'istrii'c-` tion-` and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claimedjy Referring lto the accompanying draw- Figure 2 is a 'transverse vertical sectional K under portion of the box shown in Figure 1 and F i Figure a detailed view in sidej'elevan tion showing the water conduit, ,also shfown in dotted outlines in Figure'l.
In the following description and in `the claims, parts will be identified by specific naines for convenience of expression-bid they are intended to be as `generic in'tliei'r application te similar-parts'as the-artfwill ln the drawings, there is shown "an"ii`pr Istanding wooden cabinet including La. "front v` side 12, a rear side 13, `and preferably pannelled and signed to simulate in ,generaluse The "interior of thefcabiiiet end. sides "14C, otherwise deice box constructions now is divided into two majorfcompartnieiits by` means of ,a partition 15l which fornisalo'wer icey containingl andstoring compartiment 16 'andan' upper ipvater containing"compartineiit 17.
is open at vthe top. A cover `19"'constitntes j Y n rllie water containing 'conipa-rt-y ment is lined with-a metallic liiiin'g18fanfd the top of the box and afclo'sure for the c'o'm partment 17. A plurality'ofjsupporting lugs 20 project inwardly 'from'the sides of` the compartment 17 and 'serve y'assupports.-.,I
for a metal tank This tank is designed to contain unfiltered water and has a' bottom '22 whicliis'jspaced from the b'yottoni-f-the conipartnientsoas to dividethe water con-` taining compartment'into .an upper n'uniltered water compartmentQS` and into 'ae lower filtered compartmenta. .ln those condi..- tions where ',thewater is used aboutas rapidly as itis `filtered the compartment 24 will be'relatively'small fas shown in Figure box through a conduit, part et nated it will be broken away from 2 but in those conditions where it is desired to store a relatively large amount of filtered water the unfiltered water comiiartment will be ol' relatively smaller proportion than illustrated.
The bottom 22 is provided with an opening 25 which is outlined by a depressed up wardly facing seat 26.
A slab of iiltering material, such as unglazed sand-stone 2? is positioned on the seat and the stone, i'tdesired, may be cemented into place with some sort of soit cement.
The liltered water is discharged Atrom th' "which i formed into a coil 30 which also con? itutes a supporting ledge the ice and is disposed in an ice pan 31, t is 'round that with devices ot this character and irrespecn tive ot the elliciency of the lilteringg system it is necessary to frequently clean the coil and for this purpose the coil is heroin shown to be removable as a unit while leaving the ends securely lixed in place the box; The conduit includes an intake pipe 32 opening through the bottoni oit water compartment and rfixed in position box. For the purpose oiC drawing unch i.' water Yfrom the box the pipe 32 is pr with an extension projecting torn@ therefrom, through the iront oi the box and terminating in a g 231i. Sain" discharge end oi the co' form of a pipe 35 iixed in pc box, projecting through the iront n'de thereof and terminating in a cool if 'faucet 36. Both faucets are above th level ot the ice supporting. coil and are below the bottom. of the filtered water thereby to permit water to liow g froml the compartment and to permit to' accumulate in the coil to cool the water for drinking` purposes. 'he coil is l vided with upturned ends, and are coul.. to thef pipes 32 and 35 by means ol' readily manipulated unions 37. l
ln operation it is understood that water from the spring, river or city supply is poured into the unfiltered water compartment and is allowed to slowly jpercolat-e through the stone filter constituting the bottom ot this compartment. Ey selectively opening the faucets the water iay be withdrzwn, either dir ctly Ytrom the iiltered water compartment or from the cooling coil.y i
W'hen nii ha the filter stone becomes containiand a new iilter substituted as sugg As the slabs are large in and in tact are made as nea-r as possible coextensive with` the bottom of the iiniiltered watercontaining compartment relatively small amounts ot water are passed through unit areasand in this way the lite ot the filter is ineens@ v prolonged even though the box accommodates relatively large volumes otwate'r.
Securing the ends of the water conduit in place has the advantage ot locating these parts iixedly in the box, thus eliminating the tendency to leak at the connections to the box and at the same time permits the removal oit the coil portion which is the portion most liable to become damaged.
llVhile 1 have shown and described,l and have pointed out in the annexed claims, certain novel 1features oit my invention, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes in the 'form and details of the device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention.
l-laving thus claim:
1. in ice box provided witha horizontaldisposed partition forming the interior of the box' into an upper water containing compartment and a lower ice containing compartment, said water containing` comdescribed my invention, 1
partment providedwvith a horizontal partichamber and a lower iiltered water compartment, said second partition constituta. removable insert in the water containing compartment and formed in part by a slab ol filtering material and means for drawing oft the water from the lower filtered water compartment.
3. A cabinet ice box provided with ahori- -zontally extending partition dividing the interior into an upper water containing compartment and a lower ice containing compartment, said upper water containing compartment provided with another partition dividing the same into an upper unfiltered waterchamber and a lower filtered waterl compartment, said second partition provided with an opening, a slab seat outlining th-e opening, a slab of iiltering material located on sail slab seat and a water cooling coil `in said ice chamber supplied :trom said liltered water compartment.
Signed at New Yorkcityin thecounty oi New York and State oi' New York this 19th day ot August, A. l). 1921. l c MGUEL GNZALEZ.
