EDWARD a. ROSE AND PAUL L. MARDIS, on SWISSVALE, PENNsYLvANm, ASSIGNORS 'ro WESTINGHOUSE mncrmc a MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION or PENNSYLVANIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PUSH-BUTTON SWITCH.
To-all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that we, EDWARD E. Rose, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Swissvale, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, and PAUL L. MARDIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Swissvale in the county of Allegheny and State of lennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Push-Button Switches, of which the followin is a specification.
ur invention relates to electrical switches and particularl to push-button switches.
One object 0 our invention is to provide a device of the above indicated character that shall be simple and durable in construction, effective in operation and economical to manufacture.
Another object of our invention is to provide a very compact push-button-switch structure that shall be particularly adaptable for mounting inside a controller casing where space is limited and wherein other electrical devices must be carefully avoided.
In practicing our invention, we provide a tubular insulatin casing disposed on the inside of a contro ler cover plate and having resilient contact members disposed across the inner end thereof. An outwardly biased push-button member disposed in the casing projects through the cover plate and has a co-operating relatively movable contact member at its inner end.
The single figure of the accompanying drawings is a view, partially in section and partially in elevation, of a switch embodying our invention and showlng the portion of a controller or other plate for which it is especially adapted.
A cover plate '1, forming a part of the usual well-known electric railway car or locomotive controller, supports, at its inner side, a tubular, preferably metal, member 2 having an annular reduced portion 3 around which an insulating tubular member 4'is disposed and to which the member 4 is attached by a screw or screws 5. A bolt 7 extends through a lug 6 on the member 2' and also through the plate 1 and an outside plate member 8. A relatively thick insulating partition or annular member 9 is d1s posed in the tubular member 4 adjacent to its inner end 4 and is provided with an opening 10 into which the inner end 11 of an operating or'push-button member 12 extends.
The operating member 12 is provided, at an intermediate portion, with a flange 13 which limits its outward movement, the flange 13 being biased against the member 2 by a compression spring 14 positioned around the member 12 between the flange 13 and the partition 9.
l Contact members 15 are diametrically disposed on opposite sides of the opening 10 adjacent to the inner end of the member 4 and are secured in position by screws 16 that extend through openings in the member 4 and into the partition member 9 to hold the plarts together. Each contact member 15, t at is preferably constructed of strap material, is bent to substantially inverted -shape having a vertical center portion 17 for attaching it to the member 4 and a relatively long cross portion 18 which extends to a position over the opening 10. This construction permits the members 15 to have relatively lOIlg resilient lever arms which extend from bent portions 19 thereof to their positions adjacent to the opening 10.
A screw member 20 consitutes a bridging contact member at the inner end of the member 12. Shoulders 21, on the operating member 12, are adapted to engage the adjacent surface of the partition member 9 to limit the downward movement of the member 12.
While we have shown and described a particular form of our invention, changes may be effected therein without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, as set forth in the appended claims.
We claim as our invention:
1. A switch comprising an apertured metal base member, a tubular insulating member secured thereto, an apertured plug member disposed in said tubular member,
and a push-button member disposed in said tubular member having a reduced portion to provide a shoulder thereon, said reduced portion being operable in said plug member and the shoulder functioning to limit the operation of said push-button member.
2. A' switch comprising a tubular casing,

her at each end y contact member and one f, a push-button member biased outwardly. thr
,ionar EDWARD E. ROSE.
'mg said stat of said partitions to said casing.
In testimony whereof, We have hereunto 10 -butsubscribed our names this 5th day of De- 5 ton member, a oo-operating stationary concember, 1919.-
an epertured pa-x-tifion mem thereo ough one of said. partition members, a contact member on said push tact member for sand first contact member on said casing, and a single means for hold- PAUL L. MARDIS.
