Description

E. F. SHOENBERGER.
' Thi'll-Gounl'in Patented Feb. 12, 1856.
MFET RS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAPHEB. WASHINGTON. u. 0.
UITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN F. SHOENBERGER, OF MAR-IEITA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAFETY SPRING-COUPLING.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN F. SHonNBER- GER, of Marietta, county of Lancaster, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Carriage Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The coupling is formed of three pieces, two of them wrought or malleable cast iron or any other metal; the third is of steel operating as a spring. One of the pieces is styled the box iron A (which is attached to the axle of a carriage) with circular sides B ending in a point C beneath; between these circular sides B or in the center is an opening D with a slot E on top of each circular side B, into which opening D the other piece or shaft iron F is inserted. This second piece F has an oblong key Gr which is let down vertically into the slots E, and rests in the circular recesses H of the circular 14,256, dated February 12, 1856.
sides or box B. When let down in a perlpendicular or vertical position the pieces form a complete and permanent joint, and self adjusting. The third piece or spring I is attached and riveted on the underside of the second piece F (or what may be termed the shaft iron F) and extends along the underside until it reaches beyond the lower points C of the circular side pieces B, against which points C the spring I bears, so that the joint operates quietly and firmly without noise or rattling, and assists in retaining the position of the joint as it may be adjusted.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The shape and construction of the coupling, so that the shafts of the carriages can be attached to the axle by merely dropping the ends downward into the boxes, in a vertical position, and their combination'with the spring to prevent noise or rattling substantially as described.
EDWIN F. SHOENBERGER.
